Special Stitch Instructions
DCStndSt: Note: Can be substituted with (Ch 1, SC, Ch 2), any other chainless DC, or Ch 3. Ch 1, SC in first st from prev rnd, Ch 1, SC in FLO of SC that was just made (i.e. stacking second SC on first SC).
Pct-Shell:
First Pct-Shell in rnd: (DCStndSt, DC) in first st/ch sp, Ch 3, Sl St into first ch of Ch 3 (Picot made), 2 DC in same st/ch sp (Pct-Shell made).
Subsequent Pct-Shells in rnd: 2 DC in first st/ch sp, Ch 3, Sl St into FLO of DC last made (Picot made), 2 DC in same st/ch sp (Pct-Shell made).
Spn St: Note: Can be substituted with Crab St/Reverse SC. Insert hook in st, yo, pull through a loop (two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first loop on hook (two loops on hook), spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane, yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.
Hints and Tips
- Col changes are not incorporated into the pattern instructions; however, cols can be changed as desired.
- When fastening off a col after a rnd, always leave sufficient tail length to securely sew in on WS.
- When commencing a new col for a rnd ignore pattern instructions to Sl St into next cnr sp and instead join new col directly into cnr sp to commence.
- The DC immediately following the cnr Ch 2 Sp (in the prev rnd) can become hidden after constructing the current rnd cnr 2 DC – Ch 2 – 2 DC st sequence. Expose the prev rnd DC (if needed) by gently pulling the cnr sts away from this st. It is critical to work into the first DC st following each cnr Ch 2 Sp, to achieve the correct st count in following rnds.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- Work all sts in ( ) in the same st from the prev rnd.
- An explanation of the [ ] and * * rep instructions is provided in Appendix B. [ ] contain a short st sequence that is rep multiple times when constructing a single side of the blanket. * * contain longer st sequence that forms an entire side of the blanket. This is rep multiple times to make the remaining sides of the blanket.
- A st count follows each rnd instructions in ( ). This is provided for a single cnr and side only. Multiple by 4 for st count for entire rnd. Refer to Appendix C for a st count explanation.
- DCStndSt are included in the DC st count.
- Sl St to begin and complete each rnd are not included in the st count.
- Each rnd always begins and ends the same cnr Ch 2 Sp.
- A diagram for the first 12 rnds is provided in Appendix D of premium pattern PDF. The same construction applies to every subsequent three rnd rep.

Pattern Dedication
This blanket is dedicated to our gorgeous, clever, and humorous eldest son Liam, who was born in 2010 – how time flies!
I worked the design swatch over two years ago, so it was about time that I penned this pattern. I hope you enjoy making your First Born Love Blanket.
