A sweet blanket that features alternating inverted solid triangle and lace triangle motifs.
It is constructed in the round, from a simple three-round repeat.
The blanket pattern is suited to advanced beginner skills and works up very quickly.
The finished product is suited to all ages and sexes.
Pattern Details
Recommended Yarn: Yarn of any brand, fibre and weight can be used. Use a single yarn colour, multiple yarn colours or a gradient yarn.
Hook: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Work a few swatches, each with different hook size, and then select the hook that achieves the preferred drape.
Size: Size to preference by making as many three round repeats as desired.
Skill Level: Advanced beginner to Intermediate.
Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations for the stitches used and Special Stitch Instructions for instructions for the special stitches.
Gauge: N/A – work with chosen hook size/ personal tension to achieve the preferred drape.
Pattern Synopsis: Blanket is constructed in the round, centre outwards, using a simple three-round repeat (from Round 4 onwards) and beginner-worthy Ch, SC, and DC stitches. The pattern consists of solid inverted triangles separated by lace triangles. Corners are always 2 DC – Ch 2 – 2 DC construction in the basic pattern. The bonus pattern supplement provides interesting variations to the basic pattern.
Project Examples
Grey blanket: Red Heart Super Saver (10 ply/ Worsted weight/ Cat. 4 yarn) – almost four 200g balls. Made with a 5.5 mm hook, 13 rounds of pattern plus five rounds of border (simple solid/ filet) and measuring 140 cm/ 55” square (large throw blanket).
Blue blanket: Spotlight Marvel (8 ply/ DK weight/ Cat. 3 yarn) – almost four 100g balls (~385 g/ ~13.5 Oz and ~1090 m/ 1192 yd). Made with a 4.5 mm hook, 15 rounds of pattern plus three rounds of border (triangle filet/ picot shell) and measuring 108cm/ 42.5” square (baby blanket). Refer to Ravelry Supplement for instructions.
For additional project ideas and examples, please refer to Ravelry.
Tips
- For best results, use a yarn that is composed of a fibre that yields good stitch definition (avoid extremely soft/ unstructured yarns and fluffy yarns).
- The stitch immediately following the corner Ch 2 Sp can become hidden after constructing each corner 2 DC – Ch 2 – 2 DC stitch sequence. Expose the stitch (if needed) by gently pulling the corner stitches to the right, away from this stitch. It is critical to work into this first DC stitch following the Ch 2 Sp, to achieve the correct stitch count in following rounds.
- It is recommended that the basic pattern be made first, before the pattern supplement variation is attempted.
- If your blanket takes the appearance of ‘turning’, work 1 to 3 rounds of each repeat on the reverse side. This isn’t an issue for all makers, however it will solve the problem for those whom it occurs for.

Special Stitch Instructions
Standing Stitch (StndSt)
A Standing Stitch is worked at the start of a new round so that the seam is less obvious. The method described below is the simple stacked SC method. If you already have a preferred method, then please substitute your preferred method wherever this stitch is referenced in the pattern instructions.
If you prefer to commence rounds with chains, then substitute ‘Ch 3’ for DCStndSt wherever this appears in the pattern. (Therefore, when commencing each round Ch 5 would be constructed, to count for the first DC plus the first Ch 2 Sp.)
DCStndSt:
- (With or without first Ch 1, depending on personal preference) SC in the first stitch from the previous round.
- Ch 1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.
Spin Stitch – optional (used for border option only)
Please refer to The Crochet Fix YouTube video for visualisation.
Crab Stitch can be substituted, if preferred.
- Ch 1, then insert hook in first stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Yarn over and pull a loop through the last loop made (two loops on hook). While keeping both loops on hook, spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane. Yarn over hook and pull a loop through both loops on hook. (First Spin Stitch made.)
- Insert hook in next stitch, then yarn over hook and pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Yarn over and pull a loop through the last loop made (two loops on hook). While keeping both loops on hook, spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane. Yarn over hook and pull a loop through both loops on hook. (Next Spin Stitch made.)
- Repeat Step 2. until end of round, and then Sl St into first Spin Stitch to complete round.
Picot Shell (used for border option only)
Ch 3 picot instruction (used in the Picot Shell instructions below):
Ch 3, and then Sl St into first Ch of Ch 3 (such that a small Ch loop is constructed).
First Picot Shell in the round instructions:
In the same stitch, work all the following stitches: DCStndSt, DC, Ch 3 picot, 2 DC.
Subsequent Picot Shells in the round instructions:
In the same stitch, work all the following stitches: 2 DC, Ch 3 picot, 2 DC.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- Beg DCStndSt are included in the DC stitch count.
- Sl St to begin and complete each round is not included in the stitch count.
- Stitch counts are provided for a single Ch 2 corner and a single side only (i.e. for a quarter of the blanket).
- Each round always begins and ends in a Ch 2 Sp corner.

Subsequent Standard Repeats – Repeat 4 Onwards
The +Stitches+ repeat number increases by one for each subsequent repeat.
Use the Repeats Table to determine, for a given repeat (column 1) and round (within the repeat (column 2)):
- The Generic Repeat Round Instructions (column 3) to be followed,
- The number of +Stitch+ repeats (column 4) to be worked, and
- The applicable Stitch Count number (column 5).
Substitute x, y and z in the Generic Repeat Round Instructions with the Repeats Table x, y and z values.
For example, if working Repeat 4, Round 13, then use Generic Round 1 instructions. Replace x with 2, replace y with 5, and replace z with 4.

A Little Background Regarding This Design
This blanket is dedicated to our gorgeous, clever, and humorous eldest son Liam, who turned 10 this year – how time flies!
I worked the design swatch over two years ago, so it was about time that I penned this pattern. I hope you enjoy making your First Born Love Blanket.
