Inspiration
I have forever been charmed by the starry night sky. Some of my favourite memories as a young child were being out at night in the Adelaide Hills, when the skies were so clear and stars were twinkly all around, almost seeming to be touchable when gazed upon from the highest elevation.
The difference in the night sky (to the naked eye) between the hills and on the flat in the city is utterly staggering.
Stars signify promise, direction and to many of us, the joy of the Christmas season, including all the beautiful Christmas carols that I hear less and less of at Christmas time… but again hold so many fond memories of my childhood where these would be played everywhere, including in all the shops, at Christmas time.
“O star of wonder, star of light, star with royal beauty bright, westward leading, still proceeding, guide us to thy perfect light.”
I have reused my favourite centre swirl for this sweet design.
You’ve given me lots of compliments for the centre swirl in other coaster designs, and some of you have told me that you look forward to more designs featuring this – thank you.
So here’s a new one to add to the collection!!!
Makers ask me why I use a lot of acrylic yarn for my coasters. I actually love the finish (personally). Plus, acrylics are really quick and easy to work with, and the perfect yarn for beginner crocheters. I have a lot of acrylic scraps and odd balls too… so I originally started designing coasters to use these up.
Pick a non-pill or low-pill acrylic and your coasters will always wash up well. I’ve washed my favourite sets lots of times and they still look great. Dry your coasters flat (on a towel or clean flat surface).
I personally have never had any issues with moisture wicking with acrylic coasters.
But yes, I do make coasters in cotton or cotton blends too. And funnily enough some of my favourite coasters are made from easy wash wool that was too stiff and scratchy for wear but made for perfect coaster yarn. So, if you have some of those impossible to wear yarns lying around definitely repurpose them to items such as coasters and cozies.
Thanks for sharing your lovely coaster projects with me on both Ravelry and social media – I love seeing all the different yarn and colour choices.

Pattern Instructions
Notes:
- All rounds up to and including the Close Spiral Stitch Sequence are worked as a continuous spiral.
- Stitch markers can optionally be used to mark the start of each continuous spiral round.
- Stitch increases in spiral rounds are always made in the second stitch of the stitch increase from the previous round.
- If gaps appear in spiral fabric (with looser tension) try working in 3L+4L of stitches instead of pattern instructions 3LO.
- Make all stitches within ( ) in the same stitch from the previous round.
- [ ] contain a short stitch sequence that will be repeated multiple times in the round.
- A stitch count follows each round instructions in ( ).
- Beg Ch 1/Sl St, and fin Sl St do not count as a stitch, except when included in Stitch Count.
- Refer to Appendix B for images of 3L and 4L. These are located at the back/reverse side of the stitch, behind, and approximately parallel with the BL of the stitch. These loops are most easily located by slightly folding forwards/curling over the edge of the circle so that the reverse of the circle can be seen (as well as the FL and BL of the stitch).
- Refer to Appendix C for images of location to SC in space between two posts of 2DCCl (in Rnd 7) and to SSC in SC (in Rnd 8).
- If joining a new colour in Rnd 6 for the star point rounds, ignore the instruction to Sl St into next Ch 1 Sp and instead directly join new colour into the Ch 1 Sp.

Appendix B: 3L and 4L Locations
The 3L and 4L are on the WS of the HDC stitch and are not visible from RS when Rnd 1 crochet circle is lying flat.
These loops can be located by slightly folding forwards the Rnd 1 stitches.

The image above provides a top view of the circle edge and shows the 3L and 4L. These loops have been loosened with a crochet hook to make them more visible.
If working in 3LO (or 3L + 4L) for the first time the loops can optionally be loosed for all stitches in the round first, before working into these loops.
Refer also to this video that shows the four loop locations and demonstrates working in 3LO and working in 3L and 4L together.
Appendix C
Rnd 7 SC in 2DCCl Location
The arrow in the image below shows the space between the right and left posts of the 2DCCl. The hook should be inserted in this location to make the SC stitch.
Note: The space has been widened/loosened with a crochet hook so that it is more visible.

Rnd 8 SC in Back Bump Location
The Back Bump loop of the Ch stitch is on the WS of the star and is not visible from RS when the star is lying flat (with RS upwards).
The Back Bump loop can be located by slightly folding forwards the Rnd 7 stitches.
The first image provides the flat view (with back bump loop hidden), and the second image provides the folded view (with back bump loop visible).

Rnd 8 SSC Location
The arrow in the image below shows the location to SSC between the right and left legs of the ‘V’ of SC from Rnd 7. The SSC is made in the centre of the SC from Rnd 7.
