Inspiration

The idea for this pattern first came to me in 2017 when tumbling blocks C2C blankets were all the rage.

I’d made a couple of rectangular tumbling blocks C2C blankets and had fallen in love with the squishy texture, how quickly these blankets were to hook up, and the fun retro vibe of the finished product.

But I also wanted to work the tumbling blocks in the round… because I absolutely love a square blanket made in the round. This construction is really very much my jam!

So I played around until I found a couple of methods that worked for me.

Both of these commence with a centre circle and making four corner blocks… but the design of the corner blocks differs.

This particular blanket design uses the much simpler corner block design.

I will shortly add the more complex design to The Crochet Fix blog also.

The original pattern wasn’t written overly well at all but I am so excited to have now given the pattern the (long overdue) facelift that it deserved.

It seemed well worth the effort to revisit the design and give it a new lease on life with a reformatted PDF and also adding a free forever version to my Blog.

This blanket works up very quickly and easily, without the need for much concentration. It is the perfect project to snuggle under and mindlessly make whilst watching a Netflix show.

Tips

  • Although colour changes are (intentionally, for simplicity) not incorporated into the pattern instructions these can be made as preferred. When changing colours for a new round the new colour should always be joined in the middle stitch of a Corner Block. Refer to Appendix C for colour sequence suggestions.
  • When fastening off a colour after a round, always leave sufficient tail length to securely sew in on WS.

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • The blanket is made in the round, turning after each round, alternating working on RS and WS (as indicated by instructions).
  • The blanket design is comprised of Corner Blocks and Tumbling Blocks (side blocks).
  • From Rnd 2 onwards Corner Blocks will be made. There will always be four Corner Blocks made in each round (one in each of the four corners). Each of these will be made from a Ch 3 – 3 2DCCl – Ch 3 stitch sequence and will be worked in the corner stitches from the previous round.
  • From Rnd 3 onwards Tumbling Blocks (side blocks) will be made. These will increase by four (or one per side) with each subsequent round. Each of these will be made from a Ch 3 – 3 DC stitch sequence and will be worked in a Ch 3 Sp from the previous round.
  • Each round (from Rnd 3 onwards) commences and completes in the middle stitch of a Corner Block (for neatest seam and so that colours can be changed in any round according to preference).
  • Work all stitches in ( ) in the same stitch from the previous round.
  • [ ] contain a short stitch sequence that will be worked multiple times when constructing a single side of the blanket.
  • * * contain longer stitch sequence for an entire side of the blanket.
  • Sl St to finish the round should be made loosely (with same tension as FL and BL of stitch that Sl St is made in). All other Sl St should be made with tight tension.
  • The first stitch in each round from Rnd 2 will be made into the finishing Sl St from the previous round.
  • A stitch count follows each round instructions in ( ).
  • Beg Ch 3 + DC is included in the 2DCCl stitch count.
  • Refer to Appendix B of PDF for photo images of first five rounds.
