Many a crocheter has expressed their love for a pretty ribbed brim on a sweet handmade beanie…

And then the subsequent frustration and disappointment when that pretty brim stretches out of shape, or slips around on the recipient’s head and the beautiful beanie refuses to stay put.

The popular Back Loop Only (BLO) short-row ribbed brim and less known/used Back Loop + Third Loop (BL+3L) short-row ribbed brim designs can be prone to stretching or slipping, especially when made in certain acrylic yarns.

Whilst the BLO short-row ribbing is the ribbing of choice for many crocheters, it isn’t the ideal brim design for all of us.

If you are looking for a different and new ribbing solution, give the textured Front Post Half Double Crochet (FpHDC) short-row ribbing a try.

The FpHDC short-row ribbing can be used for a top-down beanie (worked directly after completing the last beanie round) or for a bottom-up beanie (worked reusing the foundation round).

For a bottom-up beanie, make the beanie first and then make the brim second. Rejoin the yarn in any foundation stitch from the foundation round. The FpHDC short-rows brim length can be easily adjusted and the brim can be designed to wear unfolded or folded (according to preference). As the brim is thick it will add a lot of warmth if designed to wear folded.

Adjust the firmness of the FpHDC short-row brim as needed by changing up the hook size and/or stitch tension.
