Barry Bead Crochet Beanie is a funky, textured crochet beanie featuring a modified bead stitch.
If you love richly textured accessories that are fun and cosy to wear, this beanie will be perfect for you.

This design is named after Tania Barry who worked this fun modification of the Momentum Beanie. It worked out so cute that I had to include this variant on my blog. Refer to the Momentum Beanie design for brim options that are also suitable for this beanie design. Another similar design to check out is the Pinstripe Puff Beanie, which uses a different stitch but has a similar finished appearance.

Pattern Details

  • Beanie Size: Size to preference. Refer to Appendix B Sizing Table as a guide (for standard Child, Tween, Woman, and Man sizes).
  • Skill Level: Intermediate.
  • Stitch Terminology: US – refer also to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
  • Recommended Yarn: 10 ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight yarn of any fibre that provides a good stitch definition (i.e., avoid fluffy, feathery, or heavily textured yarns). An 8 ply/DK/Cat 3. weight yarn can also be used, if preferred. Example project yarns are provided in Appendix A and Ravelry listing.
  • Hook: Follow yarn label as a guide or use your preferred hook. Swatch and adjust hook if/as necessary to achieve the preferred density of crochet fabric. Depending on individual tension, a slightly larger hook than typically used for the weight of yarn may be required to ensure the crochet fabric is not too stiff or too dense.
  • Gauge: Not important for this item – ensure beanie circumference and length approximates the Sizing Table.
  • Pattern Synopsis: Beanie is constructed working in round, bottom up, using a repeat of front post stitches and a Modified Bead Stitch. Reduction stitches are used to shape the beanie peak. Brim is added after. Multiple options are provided for this.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

  • Refer to Appendix A: Sizing Guide for basic child/tween/adult sizing for sizing circumference (FSC Foundation Round st count) and length (Rounds 6+ instructions).
  • Ch 1 to commence the round does not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes.
  • Sl St/Invis Join to complete the round do not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes.
  • Fp Mod Bead can be substituted for Mod Bead from Round 2 onwards, if preferred.
  • [ ] contain a stitch sequence that is repeated multiple times within a round.
  • A stitch count follows each round instructions in ( ). n = number of FSC stitches.

Beanie

FSC Foundation Round: Leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, FSCƚ a multiple of six (ensuring the last FSC is joined at the base to the first FSC), Sl St into first FSC. (n FSC)

ƚAlternatively, work a foundation Ch round and subsequent SC round, as follows:

  1. Ch a multiple of six, Sl St into first Ch (to form a closed circle).
  2. Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent Ch around, Sl St into first SC.

Round 1: Ch 1 with loose tension, DC in first two st, Mod Bead in next st, [DC in next two st, Mod Bead in next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first DC.((n/3)*2 DC, n/3 Mod Bead St)

Round 2: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpDC around first two st, DC in next st, [FpDC around next two st, DC in next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpDC. ((n/3)*2 FpDC, n/3 DC)

Round 3: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpDC around first two st, Mod Bead in next st, [FpDC around next two st, Mod Bead in next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpDC. ((n/3)*2 FpDC, n/3 Mod Bead)

Round 4: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpDC around first two st, DC in next st, [FpDC around next two st, DC in next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpDC. ((n/3)*2 FpDC, n/3 DC)

Rounds 5+: Repeat Rounds 3 and 4 until beanie measures from base of FSC Foundation Round to top of current round approximately 3/4 of the required total beanie length minus the preferred brim lengthƚ (if including a brim).

  • ƚCalculation: 3/4*(Total Beanie Length (including brim) – Brim Length).
  • Allow approximately 0–4cm/0–1.5in for a brim (according to preference).
  • Example: Total Beanie Length = 24cm and Brim Length = 4cm:
    • 3/4*(24cm – 4cm) = 3/4*20cm = ~15cm.

Shape Peak Round 1: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpDC2Tog around first two st, FpDC around next st, [FpDC2Tog around next two st, FpDC around next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpDC2Tog. (n/3 FpDC2Tog, n/3 FpDC)

Shape Peak Round 2: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpDC around first and each subsequent st around circumference, Sl St into first FpDC. ((n/3)*2 FpDC)

Shape Peak Round 3: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpDC2Tog around first two st, [FpDC2Tog around next two st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpDC2Tog. (n/3 FpDC2Tog)

Shape Peak Round 4: Ch 1 with loose tension, FpHDC2Tog around first two st, [FpHDC2Tog around next two st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpHDC2Tog. (Shape Peak Round 3 St Count/2 FpHDC2Tog)

Shape Peak Round 5: Note: If Shape Peak Round 4 stitch count is an odd number, this round will finish at # with a FpSC (instead of a skipped stitch), and the stitch count will include an additional FpSC. Ch 1, FpSC around first st, sk next st, [FpSC around next st#, sk next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first FpSC. (Shape Peak Round 4 St Count/2 FpSC)

Sew Peak: Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length for sewing the peak of the beanie. Using a darning needle sew together the Shape Peak Round 5 stitches to close the hole at the peak of the beanie.

Brim

Refer to Momentum Beanie pattern for simple brim and other brim options.

Finishing

Sew in all ends securely on WS of beanie.

Appendix B: Basic Sizing

The appropriate beanie size can be determined by using:

A) The Sizing Guide Table below, or

B) The Approximate Personalised Sizing Method.

A) Sizing Guide Table

The table below is based on The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) beanie length.

To size the beanie circumference, first determine the number of relaxed FSC that equate to the table listed Beanie Circumference for the chosen Beanie Size, and then adjust the st count to the nearest multiple of six.

To size the beanie length, look up the table listed Beanie Length for the chosen Beanie Size. For a slouchy beanie, add at least an inch or 3-4cm to the table beanie length.

Beanie Size Beanie Circumference Fitted Beanie Length (incl. brim)
Inches Cm Inches Cm
Child 18 – 20 45.5 – 51.0 7.5 – 8.0 19.0 – 20.5
Tween 20 – 22 51.0 – 56.0 8.0 – 8.5 20.5 – 21.5
Woman 21 – 23 53.0 – 58.5 8.0 – 9.0 20.5 – 23.0
Man 22 – 24 56.0 – 61.0 8.5 – 9.5 21.5 – 24.0

B) Approximate Personalised Sizing Method

Circumference measure:

Determine the number of relaxed FSC that fit around the person’s head or ask the person to measure their head circumference using a tape measure and then determine the number of relaxed FSC for this circumference.

If needed, adjust the FSC count to the nearest multiple of six.

Length measure:

Use a tape measure, or ask the person to use a tape measure, to measure the length from just above the person’s brow to their crown. For a slouchy beanie add at least an inch or 3-4cm to the measured length.
