The Festival Vibes Beanie is sassy, slouchy beanie that works up quickly with any soft DK/8ply yarn.
The flower design is on trend 70’s style, and is eye-catching and fun.
There are two designs for this beanie – the simplest is provided for free on my Blog, and both are provided in the Ravelry pdf.

Pattern Details
- Recommended Yarn: DK/8 ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn, ~55-60g/2-2.1Oz. Soft cotton, bamboo, acrylic, or blends of these fibres. The yarn needs to be soft to achieve a slouchy and lacy drape. Refer to Appendix A and Ravelry for example projects.
- Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension to achieve gauge. The beanie fabric should be soft and have a slouchy drape.
- Beanie Size: OSFM adult woman/teen/tween/older child: ~53cm/21in circumference and ~25cm/9.9in long, with some positive ease. Refer also to Appendix B for tips for resizing.
- Skill Level: Advanced (adventurous) beginner (Design 1) to intermediate (Design 2).
- Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
- Gauge: First four rounds: ~8.5cm/3.35in in diameter. If fractionally bigger this is fine as brim round can be used to tighten beanie.
- Pattern Synopsis: Instructions are provided for two designs with different spacing of flowers, both with top-down construction (Design 1 on this Blog and both in Ravelry pdf). Increases are made in solid Rounds 2 to 8. Flower motifs are made in Rounds 10 to 20. DC is used for solid rounds, and flower lace rounds are constructed from Ch, SC, HDC and DC (or variations thereof). Optional Spn St brim for neat finish.

Tips
- Ensure all Ch st are made with an even tension throughout beanie construction.
- Design 1 (flower spacing 10 st) is suited to beginner level skills and Design 2 (flower spacing 8 st) to intermediate level skills.
- The standard pattern will construct a slouchy beanie (as pictured). If a fitted beanie is preferred, repeat Round 9 another one to two times, and then omit Rounds 20-24.

Appendix B – Adjusting the Beanie Size
Before making the beanie to a custom size, practice making a beanie according to the standard pattern (Design 1 and/or Design 2).
The beanie can be adjusted in size by one or more of:
- Increasing or decreasing the starting st count,
- Increasing or decreasing the number of increase rounds,
- Increasing or decreasing the total number of rounds.
The Sizing Guide Table (below) has been formulated with consideration of The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) beanie length. To make a fitted beanie use the table listed Beanie Length as a guide. To make a slouchy beanie add at least 2-3cm or an inch to the table listed length. (For example, beanies made with DK using the standard pattern will be approximately 25cm/9.8in in length, which is perfect for a slightly slouchy adult woman sized beanie.) When making a beanie for a toddler one of the lace flower 5 round repeats should be omitted, unless a very slouchy beanie is preferred.
Sizing Guide Table
Beanie Size | Beanie Circumference | Beanie Length (incl. brim) | ||
Inches | Cm | Inches | Cm | |
Toddler | 16 – 18 | 40.5 – 46.0 | 7.0 – 7.5 | 18.0 – 19.0 |
Child | 18 – 20 | 45.5 – 51.0 | 7.5 – 8.0 | 19.0 – 20.5 |
Tween | 20 – 22 | 51.0 – 56.0 | 8.0 – 8.5 | 20.5 – 21.5 |
Woman | 21 – 23 | 53.0 – 58.5 | 8.0 – 9.0 | 20.5 – 23.0 |
Some examples of adjusting beanie size to cater for custom measurements are provided below:
Example 1: Adjusting beanie for child with head circumference 45.5cm using Design 1.
- Child’s head circumference is 45.5cm. This is found to be the equivalent of 68 relaxed Ch in the chosen yarn using the chosen hook.
- The nearest factor of 10 is determined to be 70 Ch.
- The beanie is commenced with 10 DC in the beg circle and increases made as per Rounds 2 to 7 of the standard pattern, with the st count after Round 7 equalling 70 st. Round 8 will be skipped as the st count should not be further increased.
- Each round is found to add approximately 1cm/0.4in in length to the beanie. Therefore, for the beanie to be 22cm/8.7in in length – slouchy child size, adding a couple of cm to table beanie length – approximately 22 rounds need to be made. As seven rounds have been worked, 15 still need to be made. The lace flower rounds are 15 in total, so all of these will be worked, noting that one less stitch repeat will be made each round.
Example 2: Adjusting beanie for toddler with head circumference 41cm using Design 2.
- Toddler’s head circumference is 41cm. This is found to be the equivalent to 63 relaxed Ch in the chosen yarn using the chosen hook.
- The nearest factor of 8 is determined to be 64 Ch.
- The beanie is commenced with 8 DC in the beg circle and increases over the next 7 rounds to 64 st. (I.e. inc every st in Rnd 1 (16 st), inc every second st in Rnd 2 (24 st), inc every third st in Rnd 3 (32 st), inc every fourth st in Rnd 4 (40 st), inc every fifth st in Rnd 5 (48 st), inc every sixth st in Rnd 6 (56 st), inc every seventh st in Rnd 7 (64).)
- Each round is found to add approximately 1cm/0.4in in length to the beanie. Therefore, for the beanie to be 20cm/7.8in in length – slouchy child size adding a couple of cm to table beanie length – approximately 20 rounds need to be made. As eight rounds have been worked, 12 still need to be made. The lace flower rounds are 15 in total, so one repeat of these rounds needs to be skipped. Two of the lace flower repeats (10 rounds in total) will be made. Before commencing the lace flower rounds an additional two solid rounds will be made (each 64 DC around). The Design 2 lace flower rounds 10-19 will then be worked, noting that two less stitch repeats will be made each round.
