- Skill Level: Adventurous Advanced Beginner to Intermediate.
- Stitch Terminology: US – refer also to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
- Recommended Yarn: 10 ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight yarn of any fibre that provides a good stitch definition (i.e., avoid fluffy, feathery, or heavily textured yarns). An 8ply/DK/Cat 3. weight yarn can also be used, if preferred. Example project yarns are provided in Appendix A.
- Hook: Follow yarn label as a guide or use your preferred hook. Swatch and adjust hook if/as necessary to achieve the preferred density of crochet fabric. Slightly looser tension or larger hook than usual may be required to ensure fabric is soft.
- Gauge: Not important for this item – ensure beanie circumference and length approximates the Sizing Table.
- Pattern Synopsis: Constructed working in the round from bottom to top, using a cluster stitch and skipped stitch. The peak is reduced and then cinched. A brim is added next – multiple options are provided.

Pattern Instructions
Notes:
- Refer to Appendix B: Sizing Guide for basic child/tween/adult sizing for beanie circumference (FSC Foundation Rnd st count) and beanie length (for Rnds 3+ instructions).
- From Rnd 2 onwards the beanie will be made as a continuous spiral. A st marker can be used to keep track of rnds.
- Work all sts within ( ) in the same st.
- The last st in the rnd is always skipped.
- A st count follows each rnd in ( ).
- Fin SC2Tog counts as a SC for st count purposes.
- Beg Ch 1/Ch 2 to begin the rnd do not count as a st for st count purposes.
- Sl St/Invis Join to finish the rnd do not count as a st for st count purposes.
Beanie
FSC Foundation Rnd
Leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, FSCƚ a multiple of four (ensuring last FSC is joined at the base to first FSC), Sl St into first FSC.
(n FSC)
ƚIf preferred, a foundation Ch rnd and subsequent SC rnd can be made in place of the FSC Foundation Rnd as follows:
- Ch a multiple of 4, Sl St into first Ch (to form a closed circle).
- Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent Ch around, Sl St into first SC.
Round 1
Note: If preferred, instead of FinSC2Tog make a SC in the second to last st and Sl St into first 2DCCl.
Ch 2, (2DCCl, SC) in first st, sk next st, [(2DCCl, SC) in next st, sk next st] rep to last two st in rnd, 2DCCl in second to last st, FinSC2Tog in second to last st and first 2DCCl from this rnd.
(n/2 2DCCl, n/2 SC)
Rnd 1
Note: Fin SC2Tog has been included for neatest seam/finish to the rnd. An easier option is SC in second to last st from prev rnd and Sl St into first 2DCCl.
Ch 2, (2DCCl, SC) in first st, sk next st, *(2DCCl, SC) in next st, sk next st, rep from * to last two sts in the rnd, 2DCCl in second to last st, Fin SC2Tog in second to last st and first 2DCCl from this rnd.
(n/2 2DCCl, n/2 SC)
Rnd 2
Notes:
- The beanie will be made in continuous rnds (spiral) from this rnd onwards.
- Each (2DCCl, SC) cluster will always be made in a 2DCCl from the prev rnd. Each SC from the prev rnd will be skipped.
- Refer to Image 1 in PDF for location of first and subsequent (2DCCl, SC) cluster in the rnd.
(2DCCl, SC) in first st, sk next st, *(2DCCl, SC) in next st, sk next st, rep from * around to first 2DCCl from this rnd.
(n/2 2DCCl, n/2 SC)
Rnds 3+
Notes:
- The beanie will continue to be made in continuous rnds (spiral).
- Refer to Image 2 in PDF for location of first and subsequent (2DCCl, SC) cluster in the rnd.
Rep Rnd 2ƚ until beanie is preferred length (from brim to peak) minus the length of a brim (if applicable) and the Shape Peak Rnds.
(n/2 2DCCl, n/2 SC)
ƚTo determine the Length of Rnd 3 Reps to make:
- After making three rnds, measure the height of these rnds from base of first rnd to top of third rnd. This measurement is the Shape Peak Rnds Length. Note: Shape Peak Rnd 4 is SC height only, so will not need to be accounted for. Example of OSFM Slouchy Women’s Worsted Beanie: Three rnds are ~4.5cm in height.
- Calculate the Length of Rnd 2 Reps as follows: (total beanie length) – (brim lengthƚ) – (Shape Peak Rnds Length (from Step 1.)) ƚA brim of between 0-4cm/0-1.6in is recommended. Example of OSFM Slouchy Women’s Worsted Beanie: 24cm – 4cm – 4.5cm = 15.5cm. I.e. Rnd 2 reps should be made until beanie length is ~15.5cm.
Shape Peak Rnd 1
Note: As per prev rnds, the Shape Peak rnds will be made in continuous rnds (spiral). Sts will be made in each 2DCCl from prev rnd (skipping each SC).
2DCCl in first st, sk next st, SC in next st, sk next st, *2DCCl in next st, sk next st, SC in next st, sk next st, rep from * around to first 2DCCl from this rnd.
(n/4 2DCCl, n/4 SC)
Shape Peak Rnd 2
(2DCCl, SC) in first st, sk next st, *(2DCCl, SC) in next st, sk next st, rep from * around to first 2DCCl from this rnd.
(n/4 2DCCl, n/4 SC)
Shape Peak Rnd 3
Note: If st count after Shape Peak Rnd 2 is a multiple of four, follow instructions A). If st count after Shape Peak Rnd 2 is not a multiple of four, follow instructions B).
A) 2DCCl in first st, sk next st, SC in next st, sk next st, *2DCCl in next st, sk next st, SC in next st, sk next st, rep from * around to first 2DCCl from this rnd.
(Shape Peak Rnd 2 Total St Count/2)
OR B) 2DCCl in first st, sk next st, SC in next st, sk next st, *2DCCl in next st, sk next st, SC in next st, sk next st, rep from * around until last two sts before first 2DCCl, (2DCCl, SC) in second to last st, sk last st.
((Shape Peak Rnd 2 Total St Count + 2)/2)
Shape Peak Rnd 4
SC in first st, sk next st, *SC in next st, sk next st, rep from * around to first SC from this rnd, Sl St into first SC.
(Shape Peak Rnd 3 Total St Count/2)
Cinch Peak
Fasten off yarn leaving a long tail for cinching peak of beanie.
Using either a darning needle or crochet hook, weave long tail in and out through Shape Peak Rnd 4 sts.
Pull tail gently to cinch peak closed.
Brim
Notes:
- To commence:
- Whilst keeping beanie RS facing, rotate beanie so beanie is positioned with bottom opening upmost and peak downmost.
- Join yarn either in 1) base of first FSC or 2) top of first FSC – refer to Image 3 in PDF. Work brim sts consistently in same location in each FSC around. For 2) brim sts will be worked over the top of FSC sts. If unsure of preference, swatch both options.
- Follow instructions for one of the pattern brim options or use a brim of your own design.
- Option 1 can be made as a single rnd to give the beanie a finished look and is designed to be worn unfolded. This can also be made following Option 2.
- Options 2 and 3 are designed to be worn unfolded.
- Option 4 is also designed to be worn unfolded; however, this can be worn folded if the brim length is increased from the standard beg Ch 7.
- For Options 1, 2 and 3, the number of sts per rnd will be the same as the FSC st count.
Option 1: Spn St or Crab St (refer to PDF)
Option 2: SC
Note: If preferred, rnds can be made as a continuous spiral – omit fin join and beg Ch 1.
Rnd 1
Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent st around circumference, Invis Join into first SC.
(n SC)
Rnds 2+
Rep Rnd 1 until brim is preferred length.
Fasten off yarn leaving yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in.
Option 3: Simple HDC Rib (refer to PDF)
Option 4: Intermediate HDC Rib (refer to PDF)
Finishing
Sew in all ends securely on WS of beanie.

Appendix B: Basic Sizing
Beanie size can be determined by using:
A) The Sizing Guide Table, or
B) The Approximate Personalised Sizing Method.
Sizing Guide Table
The table below is based on The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) beanie length.
To size the beanie circumference, first determine the number of FSC (under light tension) that equate to the table listed Beanie Circumference for the chosen Beanie Size (Child/Tween/Woman/Man), and then adjust the st count to the nearest multiple of four. For an average-sized head choose a measurement that is the middle of the range.
To size the beanie length, look up the table listed Beanie Length for the chosen Beanie Size. For a slouchy beanie, add at least an inch or 3-4 cm to the table beanie length.
| Beanie Size | Beanie Circumference | Fitted Beanie Length (incl. brim) | ||
| Inches | Cm | Inches | Cm | |
| Child | 18 – 20 | 45.5 – 51.0 | 7.5 – 8.0 | 19.0 – 20.5 |
| Tween | 20 – 22 | 51.0 – 56.0 | 8.0 – 8.5 | 20.5 – 21.5 |
| Woman | 21 – 23 | 53.0 – 58.5 | 8.0 – 9.0 | 20.5 – 23.0 |
| Man | 22 – 24 | 56.0 – 61.0 | 8.5 – 9.5 | 21.5 – 24.0 |
Approximate Personalised Sizing Method
Circumference measure:
Determine the number of FSC (under light tension) that fit around the person’s head or ask the person to measure their head circumference using a tape measure and then determine the number of FSC (under light tension) for this circumference.
If needed, adjust the FSC count to the nearest multiple of four.
Length measure:
Use a tape measure, or ask the person to use a tape measure, to measure the length from just above the person’s brow to their crown. For a slouchy beanie add at least an inch or 3-4 cm to the measured length.
