Mod Star

Notes:

  • Instructions are provided for First Star, Second Star, Third and Subsequent Stars, and Last Star in the rnd.
  • Except for last star in the rnd, each Mod Star uses five loops instead of standard six loops.
  • From the second star onwards, each Mod Star uses prev Mod Star, second st that the prev Mod Star St was worked in, and next st in the rnd.
  • For best finish, loosen the last two star loops slightly by pulling hook upwards a little after the last loop is made on hook (before yo and pulling yarn through all loops on hook to make star base).
  • The pattern PDF (available soon) includes images for the location to pull through the loops.

First Mod Star

Ch 3. Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following locations: 1) 2nd ch from hook; 2) 3rd ch from hook; 3) first st (from which beg Ch 3 was made); and 4) next st (for 5 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all five loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).

Second Mod Star

Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following locations: 1) first Star Eye; 2) back of the last loop of first Star Base; 3) second st that first Star was worked in; and 4) next st (for 5 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all five loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).

Yo, pull yarn through all five loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).

Last Mod Star

Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following locations: 1) prev Star Eye; 2) back of the last loop of prev Star; 3) second st that the prev Star was made in; 4) next st (first st in the rnd); and 5) Eye of first Star made in the rnd (for 6 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all six loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • Beg Ch 1/Ch 2/Sl St and fin Sl St do not count as a st.
  • Where multiple sts are contained within ( ) in the pattern instructions, these sts should all be made in a single st from the prev rnd.
  • A st count follows each rnd instructions in ( ).

Joining Stars

Two Sided Stars

For two-sided stars either sew together two completed stars (WS facing) or use JAYG to join second star to first star when completing the last rnd of the second star.

JAYG

JAYG joins can be made in all sts in last rnd, or for quick construction, join at only the base and tip of each star point (as per YouTube video).

For join at base, SC together the two stars (WS facing) when each SC is made by inserting the hook through corresponding SC sts from both motifs.

For join at tip, after making the middle st of star point (star tip) of second star, Ch 1, remove hook from loop, insert hook through corresponding star tip of first star (through 3LO or BL+3L), place loop back on hook, pull loop through first star st, and then work the next st of the second star as per pattern instructions.

Motif Fabric

Stars can be aligned as per Motif Fabric Example image below – with additional rows and length added as needed.

Join at tip of adjacent star points, either by sewing together the tips after each motif is made or by JAYG.

For JAYG at tip, after making the middle st of star point (star tip) of current star, Ch 1, remove hook from loop, insert hook through corresponding star tip of adjacent completed star (through 3LO or BL+3L), place loop back on hook, pull loop through adjacent star st, and then work the next st of the current star as per pattern instructions.
