Single Motif Bonus Project

2D Christmas Tree

Follow instructions to make one rustic square with all seven rounds (including the two optional rounds) completed.

To form the triangular tree shape, position the square with one corner facing upwards (as a diamond).

Fold diamond sides behind to WS along the blue dotted lines depicted in the diagram below, so that both the long edges are touching on WS. Seam the long edges together on WS by sewing with needle or Sl St crochet.

Fold diamond bottom behind and upwards to WS along the green dotted line depicted in the same diagram, so that all folded edges are touching on WS. Seam along remaining adjoined edges, as before. Sew in all ends on WS.

Optional Tree Trunk

With tree triangle RS facing and base positioned upwards, join yarn RS off-centre of tree middle. Ch 1, SC or FpSC along base (between 5 to 7 sts in total) to equivalent position on other side of centre of tree base. *Turn, Ch 1, SC in each st to end of row. Rep rows from * until preferred trunk length is made.

If a thicker tree trunk is preferred, make double the tree trunk length, fold the trunk in half, backwards (to WS), then sew last row to first row on WS of tree. Or alternatively try the SC or HDC overlay technique demonstrated in the YouTube video.

Ornament

Create a hanging loop by tying a loop of yarn or making a loop of Ch sts in tip of tree.

Optionally sew star-shaped button or another decorative button to RS of tree tip.

Garland

To make tree garland, make the preferred number of trees and determine best spacing between trees.

Commence garland string with a length of Ch sts. Sl St through first tree tip to join tree to garland string. *Ch the preferred length (between trees), Sl St through next tree tip to join tree to garland string. Rep from * until all trees have been joined. Ch a finishing string length the same as garland string was commenced with. Fasten off yarn.

Multiple Motif Project Inspiration

Motifs can be sewn or crocheted together to form all sorts of pretty textured items, including:

  • Blankets, throws, and runners.
  • Cushion covers.
  • Shawls, and wraps.
  • Cup/mug covers, and pot covers.

Bags

A sample of Square and Hexagon Bag Diagrams of various shapes and sizes will be provided in the PDF.

One of these is included below.

Notes:

  • Bags should be lined if intended for use with small objects.
  • The gold colour represents the front of the bag and the brown colour the reverse side of the bag.
  • Where a motif contains both colours, it will be folded in half so that the gold half is at the front of the bag and the brown half is on the reverse side of the bag.
  • Ensure all square motifs have the same number of rnds (5, 6 or 7, according to preference).
