Pattern Details

Refer to Appendix A for example project details.

• Skill Level: Easy
• Yarn: DK/8ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn or Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4 weight yarn (for chunkier bookmark). Acrylic, cotton, wool or blends of these, ~10-15g/0.4-0.5Oz in total per bookmark.
• Hook: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension.
• Bookmark Size: Varies with brand and weight of chosen yarn. ~23cm/9in length in DK yarn, six star flower lace blocks in total.
• Gauge: Specific gauge not required.
• Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
• Notions: Scissors and darning needle.
• Pattern Synopsis:Worked from bottom to top in short rows. Each star flower block consists of four rows in total. Make as many blocks as needed for preferred bookmark length.

Special Stitch Instructions

2DCCl: Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo insert hook through same st as prev, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

2TRCl: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo twice, insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop (five loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

• A st count follows each row instructions in ( ).
• Beg Ch 1 does not count as a st.
• Beg Ch 2 + DC counts as a 2DCCl.

Foundation Row* – WS: Make 8 FSC. Turn. (8 FSC)

*Note: If preferred, FSC can be substituted with Ch 9, turn, SC into second and each subsequent Ch, turn.

Row 1 – RS: Ch 2, DC in first st, Ch 2, sk next st, 2DCCl in next st, sk next two sts, 2DCCl in next st, Ch 2, sk next st, 2DCCl in last st. Turn. (4 2DCCl, 2 Ch 2 Sp)

Row 2 – WS: Ch 1, SC in first st, Ch 3, sk next Ch 2 Sp and st, SC in btwn the two 2DCCl sts from prev row, Ch 3, sk next st and Ch 2 Sp, SC in last st. Turn. (3 SC, 2 Ch 3 Sp)

Row 3 – RS: Ch 2, DC in first st, Ch 1, sk next Ch 3 Sp, 2DCCl in next st, Ch 2, 2DCCl in same st, Ch 1, sk next Ch 3 Sp, 2DCCl in last st. Turn. (4 2DCCl, 2 Ch 1 Sp, 1 Ch 2 Sp)

Row 4 – WS: Note: If preferred, BpSC can be substituted for second and fifth SC to emphasise the petal tips. Ch 1, SC in first st and next Ch 1 Sp, SC in next st, 2 SC in next Ch 2 Sp, SC in next st and Ch 1 Sp, SC in last st. Turn. (7 SC)

Rows 5-8: Rep Rows 1 to 4.

Rows 9-12: Rep Rows 1 to 4.

Rows 13-16: Rep Rows 1 to 4.

Rows 17-20: Rep Rows 1 to 4.

Note: If bookmark is sufficient length, sk to Fin instructions.

Rows 21-24: Rep Rows 1 to 4.

Finishing: Sew in all ends securely on chosen WS. Optionally add a fringe to one or both ends of bookmark in each SC st (i.e. at the base of the st for the bottom of the bookmark and at the top of the st for the top of the bookmark).

To add a fringe to SC st: Cut a strand of yarn that is the preferred fringe length when folded. Fold the strand in half, so that there is equal length yarn tail on each side of the fold. Insert crochet hook through the SC, then insert the hook through the centre of the folded yarn (in between the right and left yarn tail). Use the hook to pull the folded loop of yarn through the SC. Use fingers to insert and pull the two tails through the middle of the loop. Pull the yarn tails gently and evenly until the fringe is securely attached to the SC.
