HTR

Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Puff

Note: The following instructions are for a modified Puff. If a less full Puff is preferred, then work one less * * repeat (for seven loops on hook).

Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook). *Yo, insert hook back through same st as before, pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook)*. Rep sts btwn * * twice more (nine loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first eight loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • A stitch count follows each round instructions in ( ).
  • Ch 1 to commence the row does not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes.
  • Work all stitches in ( ) in same stitch from the previous row.
  • The pattern instructions are for a Flwr row separated by five solid rows of HDC. If preferred, flower rows can be spaced further apart by working additional solid rows. Ensure the Flwr row is always worked on the same side throughout.
  • The same Flwr design option can be used throughout, or for additional whimsy a mix of Flwr design options can be made.
  • Stranded fringed or crochet fringe can optionally be added to completed scarf.
  • Refer to Appendix A for example projects.
  • Refer to Appendix B for images of Flwr Petal locations.

Scarf

Foundation Chain

Leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to later sew in securely, Ch an odd number that when relaxed measures the preferred width of the scarf.

(n Ch)

Row 1 – RS

Notes:

  • Working in the ‘back bump’ of the Ch sts will provide the best finish. However, if this proves difficult any two of the Ch st loops can be used instead.

Ch 1 (in addition to Foundation ch sts), HDC in back bump of second Ch from hook and each subsequent Ch (until first Ch worked in).

(n HDC)

Row 2 – WS

Turn. Ch 1, HDC in first and each subsequent st in the row.

(n HDC)

Rows 3 and 4 – RS/WS

Rep Row 2 two times – first on RS and then on WS.

(n HDC)

Row 5 – RS

Notes:

  • One Flwr will be made in this row, in the middle of the row. Follow the instructions for one of the Flwr options (Small or Medium with 5 or 6 Petals).
  • The Flwr will be made over a DC – Puff – DC stitch sequence made in this rowd. These are not included in the st count since these are used in this row and not available for the next row. The first DC in the 2 DC – Puff – DC sequence will be left unworked so that the stitch count is maintained in the next row.

Turn Ch 1, HDC in first and each st to the middle st in the row, (2 DC, Puff, DC) in middle st, Flwr over last three sts made (i.e. the DC – Puff – DC st sequence), HDC in each rem st to end of row.

(n HDC, 1 Flwr)

Row 6 – WS

Notes:

  • Ensure stitches are worked behind the Flwr so that Flwr remains completely visible on RS.

Turn. Ch 1, HDC in first and each subsequent st in the row.

(n HDC)

Rows 7 to 10 – RS/WS/RS/WS

Rep Row 6 four times, alternating RS and WS.

(n HDC)

Additional Rows

Two options for completing the scarf:

  • Work as one piece.
  • Work as two separate halves, then sew these together – recommended for 5 Petal Flwrs if symmetrical worn appearance preferred.

Work as one piece:

Rep Rows 5 to 10 until scarf is preferred length (minus fringe, if including) and finishing after Rep Row 9 for last rep (for symmetrical appearance of both ends of scarf).

Fasten off yarn.

OR Work as two halves:

Rep Rows 5 to 10 until scarf is approximately half of preferred length (minus fringe, if including) and finishing after Rep Row 7 for last rep.

Fasten off yarn.

Make second half the same as first half.

Fasten off yarn leaving a tail sufficient to sew the last rows of each half of scarf together.

Sew together the last Rep Row 7 row of each half, joining the two halves at the middle of the scarf.

Optional Fringe

Add a fringe to both short ends of the scarf.

Options include a stranded fringe or a crochet Ch fringe. (Or add a fringe of your own design.)

Stranded Fringe

First determine the required length of the fringe, double this, and then add 0.5cm/0.25in additional length to compensate for joining the fringe strands to the scarf. This is the length to cut each strand.

i.e. Strand Length = (Fringe Length x 2) + ~0.5cm/0.25in.

Cut (n + 1) x 2 strands of the above calculated Strand Length, so that there is a strand for each stitch (for both beginning and finishing rows of the scarf).

To make the fringe in a stitch, first fold the strand of yarn in half (so that there is an equal strand tail length on each side of fold (right and left)).

Insert a crochet hook through the stitch that fringe is to be made in, then insert the hook through the middle of the folded yarn (in between the right strand tail and the left strand tail).

Use the hook head to pull a loop of the yarn strand (at its centre fold) through the stitch. Ensure loop is ~3cm/1in diameter.

Use fingers to insert and pull the two yarn tails through the loop.

Pull the yarn tails gently and evenly until the fringe is securely attached to the stitch.

Optionally knot the tails at their ends.

Repeat this process for each strand and stitch.

OR Crochet Ch Fringe

(From first st in scarf edge) Ch a preferred length, Sl St back into first st (Fringe Loop made), *Sl St into next two sts, Ch the same length as previous, Sl St back into same st (Fringe Loop made), rep from * to end of row.

(Stitch Count: ((n ÷ 2) + 1) Fringe Loops)

Optionally knot end of each loop.

Finishing

Sew in all yarn ends securely on WS of scarf.
