Inspiration
Flowers are always so fun and delightful. Flowers can lift one’s mood and bring much joy and brightness to an otherwise dull day.
Daisies are especially charming with all their seventies flower child vibes.
The flower coasters I have designed so far have been so popular on Pinterest and my Blog – surprisingly so!
I’m really glad makers have enjoyed making and using them as much as I have. Such a fun and satisfying quick project. And always a great way to put yarn scraps to good use.
Makers ask me why I use a lot of acrylic yarn for my coasters. I actually love the finish (personally). Plus, acrylics are really quick and easy to work with, and the perfect yarn for beginner crocheters. I have a lot of acrylic scraps and odd balls too… so I originally started designing coasters to use these up.
Pick a non-pill or low-pill acrylic and your coasters will always wash up well. I’ve washed my favourite sets lots of times and they still look great. Dry your coasters flat (on a towel or clean flat surface).
I personally have never had any issues with moisture wicking with acrylic coasters.
But yes, I do make coasters in cotton or cotton blends too. And funnily enough some of my favourite coasters are made from easy wash wool that was too stiff and scratchy for wear but made for perfect coaster yarn. So, if you have some of those impossible to wear yarns lying around definitely repurpose them to items such as coasters and cozies.
Thanks for sharing your lovely coaster patterns with me on both Ravelry and social media – I love seeing all the different yarn and colour choices.

- Rnd = Round.
- Sk = Skip.

Special Stitch Instructions
HTR
Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.
Invis Join
Note: This stitch is used in place of Sl St join to finish the round. Refer also to YouTube video. If preferred, Sl St can be worked instead.
Remove loop from hook. Insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in. Return loop to hook, pull loop through st (from front to back). Gently pull yarn end to tighten join.
Puff
Note: The instructions below are for a modified Puff. If a fuller Puff is preferred an additional yo can be worked (for nine loops on hook in total), finishing with pull through first 8 loops and then pull through both loops.
Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook). *Yo, insert hook back through same st as before, pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook). Rep from * once more (seven loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first six loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.
Location of Puff ‘Eye’
The ‘Eye’ of the modified Puff sits beneath the front and back loops of the stitch and appears as a small hole. Working into the eye ensures the stitch being made in the Puff is aligned vertically with the Puff, and also results in a more structured, textured fabric. If tight tension makes it difficult to work into the ‘Eye’ then the front loop and back loop of the stitch can be used instead.

Pattern Instructions
Notes:
- Invis Join is used for neatest round join. However, if preferred, Sl St can be used in place of Invis Join.
- Follow only one of the Rnd 5 Petal instructions (Longer Petals or Shorter Petals).
- Suggested colour change is provided in pattern instructions; however, colour changes can alternatively be made in any round according to preference.
- Working in the single loop ‘back bump’ of Ch stitches will provide the best Petal finished appearance (as two loops will be left visible for each stitch, ensuring both sides of the petal have the same appearance). However, if this is too fiddly, work in any two Ch stitch loops according to preference.
- A stitch count follows each round in ( ).
- Beg Ch 1/Ch 2 are not included in the stitch count, unless otherwise indicated.
- Invis Join/Sl St to finish/join the round are not included in the stitch count.
Circle
Beg Circle
Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first Ch.
Rnd 1
Note: If a smaller centre is preferred HDC stitches can be worked in place of DC stitches. This may be preferred if Shorter Petals will be worked.
Ch 2, 12 DC in circle, Sl St into first DC.
(St Count: 12 DC)
Tighten Circle if using MC.
Rnd 2
Ch 1, Puff in first st, Ch 1, *Puff in next st, Ch 1, rep from * around, Invis Join into first Puff.
(St Count: 12 Puff, 12 Ch 1 Sp)
Rnd 3
Ch 1, Puff in eye of first Puff, Ch 1, Puff in next Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, *Puff in eye of next Puff, Ch 1, Puff in next Ch 1 Sp, Ch 1, rep from * around, Invis Join into first Puff.
(St Count: 24 Puff, 24 Ch 1 Sp)
Rnd 4
Ch 1, 2 SC in eye of first Puff, sk next Ch 1 Sp, *2 SC in eye of next Puff, sk next Ch 1 Sp, rep from * around, Invis join into first SC.
(St Count: 48 SC)
Fasten off first colour.
Join second colour in the first SC of any 2 SC cluster from Rnd 4.
Petals
Make only one of the following Petal Rnd options (5A or 5B). Or alternatively make the Petals to personal preferred length by adjusting the beg Ch length to preference.
Rnd 5A – Longer Petals
*Ch 10, sk first Ch (of Ch 10), HDC into back bump of next Ch st, HTR into back bump of next six Ch sts, DC into back bump of last two Ch sts, Sl St into next (unused) Rnd 4 st along (Petal made), Sl St into next Rnd 4 st, rep from * around.
(St Count: 24 Petals)
OR Rnd 5B – Shorter Petals
*Ch 8, sk first Ch (of Ch 8), HDC into back bump of next Ch st, HTR into back bump of next four Ch sts, DC into back bump of last two Ch sts, Sl St into next (unused) Rnd 4 st along (Petal made), Sl St into next Rnd 4 st, rep from * around.
