This pretty square design was made during a patch of illness – it always surprises me when down-time on the couch results in some lovely creative moments. I think it’s because all the noise of the day-to-day hustle of working life is removed and in the quietness creativity can be set free!

Although Light Worsted/DK/8ply/Cat. 3 yarn or Worsted/Aran/10ply/Cat. 4 yarn is recommended for this design, these pretty squares can be whipped in any ply/weight of yarn.

A number of my popular, sweet boho coaster designs feature the centre swirl that I have reused for this design. And I couldn’t resist adding fun and unique textured petals to the flowers.

Flowers have featured frequently in my designs (in blankets, shawls, beanies, coasters, face scrubbies, cup cosies, and square and hexagon motifs) as I find them charming, fun and joyful. I hope you enjoy this fun design and look forward to seeing the creations you make with your finished squares.

Special Stitch Instructions

2DCCl

Note: This st is similar in construction to the  DC2Tog, however it is made in a single st from prev rnd and maintains the st count.

Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

DC2Tog

Note: This stitch is like the 2DCCl except it is worked over two stitches from the previous round (instead of in a single stitch).

Yo, insert hook through first st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, insert hook through next st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

HTR

Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

PC

Note: The instructions below are for a modified Popcorn Stitch.

5 DC in same st. Remove loop from hook. Insert hook from front to back through both FL and BL of first DC. Return loop to hook, yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

StSC3

Note: The instructions below are for a modified triple SC stacked stitch, which is the height of a TR and will be made as the first TR in the round. Ch 5, (Ch 1, SC, Ch 3), or any other chainless TR can also be made in place of this stitch.

Ch 1, SC in first st, Ch 1, SC in FLO of first SC (i.e. stacking second SC on top of first SC), SC in FLO of second SC (i.e. stacking third SC on top of second SC).

TR

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • Work all stitches within ( ) in same stitch from previous round.
  • All rounds up until Round 5 will be worked as a continuous, circular spiral. Stitch markers may help with keeping track of each round. Stitch increases in the circular spiral rounds will always be worked in the second stitch of the stitch increase from the previous round.
  • The 3L (to work 3LO stitches) is located at the back/reverse side of the stitch, behind, and approximately parallel with the BL. This is most easily located by slightly folding forwards/ curling over the edge of the motif so that the wrong side of the motif can be seen (as well as the FL and BL of the stitch). If tension is loose and gaps appear in the crochet spiral fabric, then 3LO stitches can instead be worked in both 3L and 4L. The 4L is located on the wrong side beneath the 3L. Refer to Appendix B in pattern PDF for loop images, and to this video that shows the four loop locations and demonstrates working in 3LO and working in 3L and 4L together.
  • Suggested colour changes can be varied according to preference.
  • A stitch count follows each round in ( ).
  • StSC3 counts as a TR for stitch count purposes.
  • Beg Ch 1/Ch 2 are not included in the stitch count, unless otherwise indicated.
  • Sl St to finish/join a round are not included in the stitch count.
  • Wet or steam block squares for best finish.

Appendix B:

3L and 4L Locations

The 3L and 4L are on the back/reverse of the stitch and are not visible from right side when Rnd 1 crochet circle is lying flat.

These loops can be located by slightly folding forwards the Rnd 1 stitches.

The image provides a top view of the circle and shows the 3L and 4L. These loops have been loosened with a crochet hook to make them more visible.  If working in 3LO (or 3L and 4L) for the first time the loops can optionally be loosed for all stitches in the round first, before working into these loops.

Refer also to this video that shows the four loop locations and demonstrates working in 3LO and working in 3L and 4L together.
