Inspiration

The idea for this pattern first came to me in 2018 when I was in need of a pretty, shell blanket design that was made in the round and could be worked up much more quickly than other popular shell blankets, such as the Beautiful Shells blanket.

This design originally made its way into the world as Clam Shells Got This Round blanket pattern.

The pattern wasn’t written overly well and contained some stitch count errors that were long overdue to be fixed.

Even still, the design proved popular and many sweet blankets were made.

It seemed well worth the effort to revisit the design and give it a new lease on life with a reformatted PDF and also adding a free forever version to my Blog.

This blanket works up very quickly and easily, without the need for much concentration. It is the perfect project to snuggle under and make mindlessly whilst watching a Netflix show.

If you are making this blanket as a gift consider also making a cute matching beanie from the Shellastic Beanie pattern.

Special Stitch Instructions

StSC

Note: Can be substituted with (Ch 1, SC, Ch 2), any other chainless DC, or Ch 3. This stitch is also sometimes referred to as a standing stitch.

Ch 1, SC in first st, Ch 1, SC in FLO of SC that was just made (i.e. stacking second SC on top of first SC).

Tips

  • Although colour changes are (intentionally) not incorporated into the pattern instructions these can be made as preferred (such as after every clam shell repeat, or after every second clam shell repeat, etc.).
  • When fastening off a colour after a round, always leave sufficient tail length to securely sew in on WS.

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • The blanket is made in the round, from a two-round repeat:
    1. Shell Round.
    2. Textured Clam Shell Round.
  • Shells include Corner Shells and Side Shells.

There will always be four Corner Shells (one in each of the four corners) in each repeat. These will have 7 DC in the first round of the repeat.

Side Shells will be made from Repeat 2 onwards and will increase in number with each subsequent repeat (by one per side or by four in total). These will have 5 DC in the first round of the repeat.

  • Every round from Round 2 onwards begins and finishes in the middle stitch of a Corner Shell. This provides the neatest seam and enables continuation with same colour for multiple repeats (if preferred).
  • Rounds will be alternated RS/WS (as indicated in instructions).
  • Work all stitches in ( ) in the same stitch from the previous round.
  • [ ] contain a short stitch sequence that will be worked multiple times when constructing a single side of the blanket.
  • * * contain longer stitch sequence for an entire side of the blanket.
  • A stitch count follows each round instructions in ( ).
  • StSC are included in the DC stitch count.
  • Sl St to complete the round are excluded from the stitch count and should not be worked into in the following round.
  • Refer to Appendix B of pattern PDF for photo images of first two repeats.
