Inspiration

Recently I saw a set of delightful, large, retro flower ceramic coasters with 8 petals, in two colours. I loved the shape of them. Although crochet couldn’t perfectly capture a similar shape to the ceramic coasters these still provided me with some inspiration to add another flower coaster design to my existing flower power coaster collection.

Flowers are always so fun and delightful. Seventies flowers are so happy and playful.

The flower power coasters have been so popular on Pinterest and my Blog – surprisingly so!

I’m really glad you have enjoyed making and using them as much as I have. Such a fun and satisfying quick project. And always a great way to put yarn scraps to good use.

Makers ask me why I use a lot of acrylic yarn for my coasters. I actually love the finish (personally). Plus, acrylics are really quick and easy to work with, and the perfect yarn for beginner crocheters. I have a lot of acrylic scraps and odd balls too… so I originally started designing coasters to use these up.

Pick a non-pill or low-pill acrylic and your coasters will always wash up well. I’ve washed my favourite sets lots of times and they still look great. Dry your coasters flat (on a towel or clean flat surface).

I personally have never had any issues with moisture wicking with acrylic coasters.

But yes, I do make coasters in cotton or cotton blends too. And funnily enough some of my favourite coasters are made from easy wash wool that was too stiff and scratchy for wear but made for perfect coaster yarn. So, if you have some of those impossible to wear yarns lying around definitely repurpose them to items such as coasters and cozies.

Pattern Details

• Project Level: Easy to Intermediate.
• Yarn: DK/8ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn, ~15g/0.5Oz per coaster. Low-pill or non-pill, easy wash fibre (such as cotton, cotton blends, bamboo blends, and certain acrylics).
• Hook: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension.
• Coaster Size: Varies with chosen yarn. ~15cm/6in in diameter.
• Gauge: Specific gauge not required.
• Notions: Scissors, darning needle.
• Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
• Pattern Synopsis: Made in six rounds. The first four rounds make the flower inner circle, and the remaining two rounds form the petals.

• ~ = Approximately.
• 2DCCl = Two Double Crochet Cluster. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.

• BL = Back Loop/.

• DK = Double Knit yarn. Equivalent to an 8ply or light worsted weight yarn (slightly thicker than sport weight and slightly thinner than worsted weight).

Special Stitch Instructions

2DCCl

Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

HTR

Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Invis Join

Note: This stitch can be used in place of Sl St join to finish the round. Refer also to YouTube video.

Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in, return yarn loop to hook, pull loop through st (from front to back). Gently pull yarn end to tighten join.

TR

Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

• If preferred, Invis Join can be used instead of finishing Sl St for neater round join.
• If preferred, DC can be made instead of 2DCCl (for easier stitch option). Consistently use either 2DCCl (as per pattern instructions) or DC substitution throughout.
• Make all stitches within ( ) in same stitch from previous round.
• Change colours according to preference.
• A stitch count follows each round in ( ).
• Beg Ch 1/Ch 3 are not included in the stitch count, unless otherwise indicated.
• Invis Join/Sl St to finish/join the round are not included in the stitch count.

Beg Circle

Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first Ch.

Rnd 1

Ch 3, 12 DC in circle, Sl St into first DC.

Tighten Circle if using MC.

Rnd 2

Ch 3, 2 DC in each st around, Sl St into first DC.

Note: Rnd 4 sts will be reused when making Rnd 6 SC. Each SC will be made over the top of a Sl St from Rnd 5. This provides the best Petal definition.

Finishing

Fasten off yarn.

Sew in all yarn tails securely on WS of coaster.

Retro Green/Brown/Orange/Neutral Mix Coasters

• Yarn: ~16g/0.5Oz of Source of Fibre Dirty DK in total per coaster.Each coaster is a mix of three of the following colours: Grizzly, Amphibian, Rooster, Lioness.First two rounds colour A, third round colour B, last three rounds colour C.
