Yo three times, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (five loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (four loops on hook).  Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

HTR

Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Puff

Note: The following instructions are for a modified Puff. If a fuller Puff is preferred an additional rep from * can be worked (for nine loops on hook in total before pull through eight loops and then pull through remaining two loops).

Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook). *Yo, insert hook through same st, pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook). Rep from * once more (seven loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first six loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

TR

Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • Two scarf design options are provided (one using shorter TR stitches and the other using longer DTR stitches). For thicker yarns, the DTR Scarf Option may be preferred. Try a swatch of both options to determine preference.
  • For best finish work Row 1 stitches in ‘back bump’ of Foundation Chain stitches (so scarf beginning edge has two loops exposed at its base for each stitch). If this proves too fiddly use any other (of the three loops) of each Chain stitch instead.
  • A stitch count follows the instructions for each round in ( ).
  • For TR Scarf:
    • Beg Ch 4 counts as a TR stitch. In the next row work the last TR stitch into the fourth Ch of the beg Ch 4.
    • Beg Ch 5 counts as a TR and a Ch 1 Sp. In the next row work the last two TR stitches into the Ch 5 Sp and the fourth Ch of the beg Ch 5.
  • For DTR Scarf:
    • Beg Ch 6 counts as a DTR stitch. In the next row work the last DTR stitch into the sixth Ch of the beg Ch 6.
    • Beg Ch 7 counts as a DTR and a Ch 1 Sp. In the next row work the last two TR stitches into the Ch 7 Sp and the sixth Ch of the beg Ch 7.
  • For Scarf Cuff beg Ch 1/Ch 2 does not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes.

TR Scarf Design

Foundation Chain

Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make an even number (n) of foundation Ch sts that measures the preferred scarf width (relaxed) plus an additional Ch 4 (to count as first TR in Row 1).

(St Count: (n + 4) Ch)

Row 1

Turn. TR in ‘back bump’ of fifth Ch from hook (counts as first two TR sts), TR in ‘back bump’ of each subsequent Ch to end of row.

(St Count: (n + 1) TR)

Row 2

Turn. Ch 5 (counts as first TR and Ch 1 Sp), sk next TR, TR in next TR, *Ch 1, sk next TR, TR in next TR, rep from * to end of row.

(Stitch Count: ((n ÷ 2) + 1) TR, (n ÷ 2) Ch 1 Sp)

Row 3

Note: Refer to Appendix B for image for working the last two stitches in the row.

Turn. Ch 4 (counts as first TR), *TR in next Ch 1 Sp, TR in next TR, rep from * to end of row.

(Stitch Count: (n + 1) TR)

Row 4 onwards

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until scarf is sufficient length.

(If making an infinity scarf, finish instead with a Row 2 rep for neatest seamed appearance.)

Finishing

If not making Infinity Scarf option, sew in yarn ends securely on WS of scarf.

If making infinity Scarf option, follow Infinity Scarf instructions.

DTR Scarf Design

Foundation Chain

Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make an even number (n) of foundation Ch sts that measures the preferred scarf width (relaxed) plus an additional Ch 6 (to count as first DTR in Row 1).

(St Count: (n + 6) Ch)

Row 1

Turn. DTR in ‘back bump’ of seventh Ch from hook (counts as first two DTR sts). DTR in ‘back bump’ of each subsequent Ch to end of row.

(St Count: (n + 1) DTR)

Row 2

Turn. Ch 7 (counts as first DTR and Ch 1 Sp), sk next DTR, DTR in next DTR, *Ch 1, sk next DTR, DTR in next DTR, rep from * to end of row.

(Stitch Count: ((n ÷ 2) + 1) DTR, (n ÷ 2) Ch 1 Sp)

Row 3

Note: Refer to Appendix B for image for working the last two stitches in the row.

Turn. Ch 6 (counts as first DTR), *DTR in next Ch 1 Sp, DTR in next DTR, rep from * to end of row.

(Stitch Count: (n + 1) DTR)

Row 4 onwards

Repeat Rows 2 and 3 until scarf is sufficient length.

(If making an infinity scarf, finish instead with a Row 2 rep for neatest seamed appearance.)

Finishing

If not making Infinity Scarf option, sew in yarn ends securely on WS of scarf.

If making infinity Scarf option, follow Infinity Scarf instructions.

Infinity Scarf Option

Ensure the scarf length is sufficient to loop around the neck once or twice (as preferred).

Fasten off yarn leaving sufficient length to sew the beg and fin short edges of the scarf together.

Sew the edges together to form a closed loop.

Optional Fringe

Add a fringe to both ends (beginning and finishing rows) of the scarf.

Options include a stranded fringe or a crochet Ch fringe.

Stranded Fringe

First determine the required length of the fringe strands, double this, and then add 0.5cm/0.25in additional length to compensate for joining the fringe to the scarf.

Cut (n + 1) x 2 strands of equal length, so that there is a strand for each st (for both beginning and finishing rows of the scarf).

To make the fringe in a stitch, first fold the strand of yarn in half (so that there is an equal strand tail length on each side of fold (right and left)).

Insert a crochet hook through the stitch that fringe is to be made in, then insert the hook through the middle of the folded yarn (in between the right strand tail and the left strand tail).

Use the hook head to pull a loop of the yarn strand (at its centre fold) through the stitch.

Use fingers to insert and pull the two yarn tails through the loop.

Pull the yarn tails gently and evenly until the fringe is securely attached to the stitch.

Optionally knot the tails at their ends.

Repeat this process for each strand and stitch.

OR Crochet Chain Fringe

(From first st in scarf edge) Ch a preferred length, Sl St back into first st (Fringe Loop made), *Sl St into next two sts, Ch the same length as previous, Sl St back into same st (Fringe Loop made), rep from * to end of row.

(Stitch Count: ((n ÷ 2) + 1) Fringe Loops)

Optionally knot ends of loop.

Optional Scarf Cuff

The cuff can be used with both an infinity scarf and a regular scarf.

When used with an infinity scarf the best placement is just below the collarbone (to one side).

Work Cuff instructions and one of the Flower Option instructions.

Optional Scarf Cuff

Cuff

Foundation Chain

Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, Ch 5.

(Stitch Count: 5 Ch)

Row 1

Turn. SC in second Ch from hook and each subsequent Ch to end of row.

(Stitch Count: 4 SC)

Row 2

Turn. Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent st to end of row.

(Stitch Count: 4 SC)

Additional Rows

Repeat Row 2 until cuff is ~10cm/4in in length (or a length sufficient to close securely around both ends of scarf).

Button Loop

Turn. Ch a length that will securely loop over chosen button. Sl St into last st in row.

Fasten off yarn and sew in end securely.

Sew Button

Use beg yarn tail to sew button onto opposite end of cuff to the button loop.

Flower Option 1

Notes:

  • Change colours according to preference. Colour changed after each round for example scarf cuff.

Beg Circle

Leaving sufficient length of yarn tail to later sew in securely, make a circle, either using MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first Ch to close circle.

Rnd 1

Ch 2, 12 DC in circle, Sl St into first DC.

(St Count: 12 DC)

(St Count: 6 Petals (each with 2 Ch 3, 2 DC, 2 HTR))

Optionally sew a button to WS of flower to provide additional structure to flower.

Sew Flower

Sew flower to middle of the cuff. Optionally sew a decorative button into centre of flower.

Flower Option 2
