Special Stitch Instructions

2DCCl

Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo insert hook through same st as prev, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

3DCCl

Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), [yo insert hook through same st as prev, yo, pull through a loop (an additional two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (one less loop on hook)] twice (four loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all four loops on hook.

Fp2DCCl

Note: Refer to also YouTube video.

Yo, insert hook around the front of first st post of 2DCCl, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo insert hook around the front of second st post of same 2DCCl, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Fp2SCCl

Insert hook around the front of first st post of 2DCCl, yo, pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Insert hook around second st post of same 2DCCl, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Invis Join

Note: Can be substituted with Sl St. Refer also to YouTube video.

Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in, return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn through st (from front to back). Gently pull yarn end to tighten join.

Mod Bead

Note: This Modified Bead St instead uses a DC post from the prev rnd. It is finished differently by yo and pulling yarn through all but the last loop on hook first, and then yo and pulling yarn through both remaining loops. This gives it a pretty turban appearance. Refer to also YouTube video.

Yo, insert hook behind the st post of prev rnd  DC, yo, pull through a loop (around DC st post). [Yo, insert hook behind the same st post as before (beneath the existing loops), yo, pull through a loop (around DC st post)] three times in total (for nine loops on hook). Pull up on hook lightly to loosen loops slightly. Yo, pull yarn through first eight loops on hook (two loops on hook). Yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook (one loop on hook).

SC-Pct

Note: Loops to insert the hook for the Sl St are provided in Image 1, below. If preferred, the Sl St can instead be made in FLO.

SC, Ch 3, Sl St back into SC using both SC FL and SC ‘V’ left leg*.

*For left-handed makers this will be right leg.

Image 1 – SC-Pct Sl St Location

After making the Ch 3, insert the hook first through the SC FL (image location 1) and then through the left leg of the SC ‘V’ (image location 2). Then make the Sl St.

Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • [ ] contain a st sequence that should be rep according to the pattern instructions.
  • Beg Ch 1, beg Ch 2, and fin Sl St/Invis Join do not count as a st.
  • A st count follows each rnd instructions in ( ).
  • If preferred, coasters can be made with 12 sunrays (instead of 10). Commence with 12 DC in Rnd 1 (instead of 10 DC), and then make two additional reps in each subsequent rnd.
  • The 3L (to work 3LO sts for Rnd 7) is located at the back/WS of the st, behind, and approximately parallel with the BL of the st. This is most easily located by slightly folding forwards/curling over the edge of the circle so that the WS of the circle can be seen (as well as the FL and BL of the st).
  • Follow instructions for only one of the Rnd 7 options (Rnd 7A or Rnd 7B).
  • Images of completed rnds (Rnd 2 onwards) are provided in Appendix B of Ravelry PDF.
  • If gaps appear in the crochet fabric when making the HDC in BLO then these sts can alternatively be worked in both the BL and 3L together.

Beg Circle

Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first ch.

Rnd 3

Ch 1, 2 HDC in BLO of first st, Fp2DCCl around both st posts of next 2DCCl, [2 HDC in BLO of next st, Fp2DCCl around both st posts of next 2DCCl] rep 9 times in total, Invis Join into first HDC.

(20 HDC, 10 Fp2DCCl)

Rnd 4

Note: If preferred, Fp2SCCl can be substituted for Fp2DCCl (for shorter sunrays).

Ch 1, HDC in BLO of first st, 2 HDC in BLO of next st, Fp2DCCl around both st posts of next 2DCCl, [HDC in BLO of next st, 2 HDC in BLO of next st, Fp2DCCl around both st posts of next 2DCCl] rep nine times in total, Invis Join into first HDC.

(30 HDC, 10 Fp2DCCl)

2 HDC in BLO of next st, DC in next st, [2 HDC in BLO of next st, 3DCCl in next st, 2 HDC in BLO of next st, DC in next st] rep nine times in total, Invis Join into first HDC.

(40 HDC, 10 3DCCl, 10 DC)

(40 HDC, 10 FpHDC, 10 Mod Bead)

Rnd 7A – Simple SC

Note: If rnd appears too tight either loosen tension slightly, go up one hook size, or work two SC sts in every sixth st.

Ch 1, SC in 3LO of first and each next st around, Invis join into first SC.

(60 SC (or 70 SC if increases are applicable))

OR Rnd 7B – Picot SC

Ch 1, SC in 3LO of first st, SC-Pct in 3LO of next st, [SC in 3LO of next st, SC-Pct in 3LO of next st] rep around, Invis Join into first SC.
