Pattern Instructions

Notes:

  • Refer to Appendix B for sizing guide for circumference (FSC st count) and length (reps of Rnd 4).
  • Refer to Appendix C for location to Invis Join into beg Ch 3 and location to Puff in prev rnd Puff.
  • Beg Ch 3 counts as a Br St for st count purposes.
  • Beg Ch 1 and Sl St/Invis Join do not count as a st for st count purposes.
  • A st count follows each rnd instructions in ( )
  • The beanie is constructed top-down from Rnd 1 (FSC rnd) as the top of the beanie to the final beanie rnd (and optional brim rnds) at the bottom of the beanie. After the beanie/brim rnds have been made, Rnd 1 will be cinched closed (using the long beg yarn tail) to form the closed top of the beanie.

Beanie

Rnd 1

Leaving a long yarn tail of ~40cm/18in, FSCƚ a multiple of two (ensuring the last FSC is joined at the base to the first FSC), Sl St into top of first FSC.

(n FSC)

ƚIf preferred, work a foundation Ch rnd and subsequent SC rnd, as follows:

  1. Ch a multiple of two, Sl St into first Ch (to form a closed circle).
  2. Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent Ch around, Sl St into first SC.

Rnd 2

Note: Refer to Appendix C image and YouTube Video for technique for neatest fin join.

Ch 3, Puff in next st, *Br St in next st, Puff in next st, rep from * around circumference, Invis Join into third ch of Ch 3.

(n/2 Br St, n/2 Puff)

Rnd 3

Note: Refer to Appendix C image and YouTube Video for Puff location.

Ch 3, Puff in next st, *Br St in next st, Puff in next st, rep from * around circumference, Invis Join into third ch of Ch 3.

(n/2 Br St, n/2 Puff)

Rnd 4 onwards

Rep Rnd 3 until beanie length from base of Rnd 1 to top of last rnd is the required total beanie length minus the preferred brim length (if including an optional brim).

Example:

Total Beanie Length = 24cm.

Brim Length = 4cm.

Required length of Beanie rnds: Total Beanie Length (20cm) – Brim Length (4cm) = 20cm.

Brim

Notes:

  • If brim is to be omitted, skip to Cinch Top instructions.
  • If adding a brim, commence the brim directly after the final beanie rnd, using the final beanie rnd sts to make the first brim rnd (Options 1 – 3) or brim short rows (Option 4).
  • Location to work sts in first brim rnd or brim short rows:
    • When working into a Br St: use the same location that was used for Br St in prev rnds.
    • When working into a Puff: use the same location that was used for Puff in prev rnds.
  • Follow instructions for one of the brim options or use a brim of your own design.
  • Option 1 can be used as a single rnd to give the beanie a finished look and is designed to be worn unfolded. This can also be made following Option 2.
  • Options 2 and 3 are designed to be worn unfolded.
  • Option 4 is also designed to be worn unfolded; however, this can be worn folded if the brim length is increased from the standard beg Ch 7.

Option 1: Spn St or Crab St

Ch 1, Spn St or Crab St in each st around, Sl St into first Spn St/Crab St. Fasten off yarn leaving yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in.

(n Spn St/Crab St)

Or Option 2: SC (1+ Rounds)

Note: If preferred, instead of using Invis Join, rnds can be worked as a continuous spiral. Omit the join and Ch 1 instruction. Use a st marker to keep track of each rnd.

Rnd 1

Ch 1, SC in each st around, Invis Join into first SC.

(n SC)

Rnd 2+

Rep Rnd 1 as many times as required to achieve the preferred brim length and overall beanie length. Fasten off yarn leaving yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in.

Or Option 3: Simple HDC Rib in Rounds

Refer to Ravelry pdf.

Or Option 4: Intermediate HDC Rib in Rows

Refer to Ravelry pdf.

Cinch Top

Note: To make cinching easier and less bulky, an optional rnd of rep around can be worked in the base of the FSC rnd sts. This will halve the st count prior to cinching.

Use a darning needle to weave the yarn tail through every third or fourth st around the entire circumference of the beanie peak. If the chosen yarn is soft, repeat the weaving around the circumference a second time.

Gently pull the yarn to cinch the beanie. Ensure top opening is fully closed.

Finishing

Sew in all ends securely on WS of beanie.

Appendix B – Basic Sizing

The required beanie size can be determined by using:

A) The Sizing Guide Table, or

B) The Personalised Sizing Method.

Sizing Guide Table

The table below is based on The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) beanie length.

Size Circumference Fitted Length

(incl. brim)

Inches Cm Inches Cm
Child 18 – 20 45.5 – 51.0 7.5 – 8.0 19.0 – 20.5
Tween 20 – 22 51.0 – 56.0 8.0 – 8.5 20.5 – 21.5
Woman 21 – 23 53.0 – 58.5 8.0 – 9.0 20.5 – 23.0
Man 22 – 24 56.0 – 61.0 8.5 – 9.5 21.5 – 24.0

Circumference measure:

First determine the table listed Circumference for the chosen Sizeƚ. Next determine the even number of relaxed FSC for the chosen circumference.

ƚNote:

  • If in doubt, for a standard size beanie, use a measure that toward the lower end of the tabulated range, to account for beanie positive ease and stretching with wear.
  • If the chosen yarn has considerable give/elasticity, or tension tends to be very loose, adjust the circumference measure down by half an inch or 1-2cm.

Length measure:

Look up the table listed Fitted Length for the chosen Size. For a slouchy beanie, add at least an inch or 3-4cm to the table beanie length.

Approximate Personalized Method

Circumference measure:

First measure the person’s head circumference. Next determine the even number of relaxed FSC for the chosen circumferenceƚ.

ƚNote:

  • If the chosen yarn has considerable give/elasticity, or tension tends to be very loose, adjust the circumference measure down by half an inch or 1-2cm.

Length measure:

Measure the length from just above the person’s brow to their crown. For a slouchy beanie add at least an inch or 3-4cm to the measured length.
