Tip: If you want neat edges on both edges of your work, then use foundation stitches with a double loop on both the top and bottom edges.
As an added bonus, a FSC row or round with double loops results in a foundation row or round tension that is more consistent with regular stitches.
Perfect also as quick bag strap, belt or headband.

I make a lot of beanies and have found that although I prefer a regular chainless foundation round over a foundation round made from chains, it still wasn’t the perfect solution for me.
I also wasn’t entirely happy with the FSC/FHDC/FDC edge for a blanket worked in rows and was looking for a foundation with a neater finish if I didn’t want to add a border, or that would be easier to work into if I did want to add a border or a fringe to the foundation row.
Although the regular chainless foundation round stitches had a neater appearance and better tension than starting with a chain round, I was convinced there must be a neater way to make a foundation round.
So, I experimented and soon found a solution that works well for me, so much so that I use it on almost all my projects now.
Why not give the technique a go and see if it is a good fit for your style and projects also.
I have used this technique for many of my beanies that use a FSC round, and more recently for these cute cup or glass cozies:
