Pct-Shell-4: Note: When working a Pct-Shell-4 btwn the first two st posts in the row, substitute Ch 3 for the first DC. 2 DC in Ch Sp or btn st posts (as per pattern instructions), Ch 4, Sl St into FLO of second DC, 2 DC in same place as prev DCs.

Pct-Shell-6: 3 DC in Ch Sp, Ch 4, Sl St into FLO of second DC, 3 DC in same Ch Sp as prev.

Tips

  • If using a gradient yarn, consider selecting one for which a solid colour cake or equivalent ball of cotton/cotton blend can be purchased, should additional length be required. Examples of yarn cakes with gradient and solid combos include Scheepjes Whirl/Whirlette and Hobbii Twister/Twister Solid.
  • Depending on individual tension, a larger hook size than typically recommended or used for the chosen yarn, may be required to achieve a soft, lacy and delicate drape.
  • Substituting pattern instructions HTR with TR will also enhance the drape. To count for the height of the TR sts begin each row with Ch 5 instead of Ch 4. Note: If working TR, less reps will be made with a single 1000m/1093yd yarn cake than the shawls pictured in Appendix A.
  • Block finished shawl for best lacy drape.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

  • Beg Ch 4 counts as a HTR in all rows.
  • HTR are always made btwn the st posts of two HTR st from the prev row, or in a Ch 1 Sp from the prev row.
  • ( ) contain multiple st that should, as per pattern instructions, all be made in the same st from prev row.
  • [ ] contain a short rep st sequence.
  • + + and * * contain a longer rep st sequence. + + is rep within one short side of the shawl triangle and * * is a rep of one entire short side of the triangle. Refer to Appendix B for detailed rep explanation.
  • # indicates where a + + rep is fin for the last rep specifically.
  • A St Count and Motif Count follows the Row instructions in ( ).
  • ‘Motif’ refers to the modified pineapple motif that is bordered by the Ch 3 Sp and HTR st.
  • Each Motif is constructed over ten rows in total. The first set of motifs commence at Row 1. The second set of motifs commence at Row 6. Each subsequent set of motifs commences every five rows thereafter. The Additional Reps instructions are for five rows in total (commencing the first five rows of the next set of motifs and completing the last five rows of the prev set of motifs).
  • HTR btwn st post images provided in Appendix C.
  • Diagram for the first 15 rows provided in Appendix D.
  • There is no RS or WS. Shawl can be worn either side.

Optional Border

Construct one of the border design options below or add a border of your own design.

Border options have intentionally been written generically, without a specific st count, so that these can be added for any rep.

Option 1 requires a full rep to be completed before commencing.

Option 2 is a yarn sparing substitute for Rep Row 4 and can be used when there isn’t sufficient yarn left to fin with a full rep.

Option 1

Refer to Paid Pattern PDF.

Option 2

Finishing

Sew in all ends securely and invisibly.
