Ring of Stars Crochet Tree
Sweet, textured trees that will bring Christmas spirit to a fireplace mantle, bookshelf, table, or desk. They also make the cutest bunting and ornaments.
Use any yarn that yields a good stitch definition. Try some glittery yarn for seasonal appeal.
The perfect small project to try the Star stitch.

SC2Tog
Insert hook through first st, yo, pull through a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook through next st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.
Star St
Note:
- Instructions are provided for the first Star st in the rnd, the last Star st in the rnd, and regular Star st (all other Star st except first and last Star St in the rnd). Each regular Star is made using the prev star and next two st in the rnd. The last Star is made with one additional loop so that the first and last Star are neatly joined.
- Star sts can be worked in both FL and BL of sts from prev rnd, BLO of sts from prev rnd, or 3LO of sts from prev rnd.
- When all star loops have been made on hook, pull up gently on end of hook to loosen loops slightly, so that the star has a full appearance when finished.
- Refer also to related YouTube video.
First
Ch 3. Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following five locations: 1) 2nd ch from hook; 2) 3rd ch from hook; 3) first st (from which beg Ch 3 was made); and 4) and 5) next two st (for 6 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all six loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).
Regular
Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following five locations: 1) prev Star Eye; 2) back of the last loop of prev Star Base; 3) last st that prev Star was worked into; and 4) and 5) next two st (for 6 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all six loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).
Last
Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following six locations: 1) prev Star Eye; 2) back of the last loop of prev Star 3) last st that the prev Star was made in; 4) and 5) next two st (incl first st in the rnd); 6) Eye of first Star made in the rnd (for 7 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all seven loops on hook (Star Base made). Yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (Star Eye made).
Tips
- Make with single colour or multiple colours. Suggestions for multiple colours include: ombre lighter to darker from top to bottom; different colour repeated every two to four rounds. Optionally use different colour for trunk.
- Stuff/fill 3D trees for best shape/appearance.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- Beg Ch 1, Beg Ch 3 and fin Invis Join/Sl St do not count as a st.
- SC2Tog is counted as a SC in Tree Base st count.
- Rep st sequence in [ ] the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
- If using BLO or 3LO for Star sts then use Invis Join as indicated in pattern. If using FL and BL for Star sts then Sl St can be substituted for Invis Join.
- A st count follows each round instructions in ( ).
- If making a 2D/flat tree, follow the Tree instructions up to and including either Rnd 10 or Rnd 12, and then follow the 2D Tree Trunk instructions.
- If making a 3D/standing tree, following the Tree instructions finishing at any even rnd, and then follow the 3D Tree Base instructions.

Stuff/Fill Tree (optional for 3D, standing tree): Pull beg yarn tail through to WS of tree cone and sew in securely on WS. Stuff the tree with suitable poly fill.
2D Tree Trunk
Note: For Row 1 work as many SCs as needed to achieve preferred trunk width. Either 4 or 6 SCs are recommended.
Row 1: Ch 1, SC in first st and next 3/5 st (depending on preferred width of trunk). (4 or 6 SC)
Row 2: Turn to WS, Ch 1, SC in first st and next 3 or 6 st (depending on preferred width of trunk). (4 or 6 SC)
Rows 3-6: Repeat Row 2 another four times, alternating working on RS and WS.
Finishing: Fasten off yarn leaving tail of sufficient length to sew the last trunk row to the tree base. Flatten the tree so that the trunk is in the middle of the tree, then fold over the trunk in half, so that it is doubled with WS facing in, and the last row is aligned with the first row. Sew the last row of the trunk to the base of the tree (on the opposite side of the tree to where the trunk first row was commenced). Secure ends in the inside of tree.
3D Tree Solid Base
Note:
- SC2Tog is counted as a SC in Tree Base st count.
- n = Fin Tree Base st count/6. For example, if fin at Rnd 24 with 78 HDC, then n = 78/6 = 13. The base will reduce by 13 sts for each rnd until the final rnd.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, SC in each st around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Tree Final Rnd St Count)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, SC in first four sts, SC2Tog over next two sts, [SC in next four sts, SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Rnd 1 St Count – n)
Rnd 3: Ch 1, SC in first three sts, SC2Tog over next two sts, [SC in next three sts, SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Base Rnd 2 St Count – n)
Rnd 4: Ch 1, SC in first two sts, SC2Tog over next two sts, [SC in next two sts, SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Base Rnd 3 St Count – n)
Rnd 5: Ch 1, SC in first st, SC2Tog over next two sts, [SC in next two st, SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Base Rnd 4 St Count – n)
Rnd 6: Ch 1, SC2Tog over first two sts, [SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Base Rnd 5 St Count – n)
Rnd 7 – odd Rnd 6 st count: Ch 1, SC2Tog over first two sts, [SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference until last st, SC in last st, Sl St into first SC. (SC = (Base Rnd 6 St Count + 1)/2)
Rnd 7 – even Rnd 6 st count: Ch 1, SC2Tog over first two sts, [SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (SC = Base Rnd 6 St Count/2)
Finishing: Fasten off yarn. Sew SC2Tog sts together to close hole. Sew in yarn tail and pull through to inside of tree.
Try This Next
For the Frill of It
For a fancier option, try adding frills around the tree circumference at regular intervals. Optionally add Bonus Star.

Tree
First follow the Tree instructions.
Work Tree rnds in FL + BL, except for working the following rnds in 3LO only:
- For denser frills: Rnd 3, Rnd 5, Rnd 7, Rnd 9, and every second subsequent rnd.
- For sparser frills: Rnd 5, Rnd 9, Rnd 13, and every fourth subsequent rnd.
Frills
After tree is constructed, rotate tree so tree tip is facing down (so that frill sts will be worked away from tip and towards base).
Join yarn through any FL + BL exposed st in first rnd of exposed st loops (i.e. Rnd 3 (denser frills) or Rnd 5 (sparser frills)).
Work one of the following frill options.
Fasten off yarn at end of rnd, knot ends and hide ends inside tree.
Rep for all FL + BL exposed rnds.
Option A: 4 DC Shells
Note: In some rnds a single st will need to be skipped before the last 4 DC is made in last st.
Sk next st (after join location), 4 DC in next st, sk next st, Sl St into next st, [sk next st, 4 DC in next st, sk next st, Sl St into next st] rep around, 4 DC in last st, Sl St into first st (where yarn was joined).
OR Option B: 3 DC Shells
3 DC in next st (after join location), Sl St into next st, [3 DC in next st, Sl St into next st] rep around fin is same st yarn was joined.
OR Option C: SC-Pct
Ch 1, SC in first st, SC-Pct in next st, [SC in next st, SC-Pct in next st] rep around, Sl St into first SC.
Bonus Star
For teeny, tiny star refer to the instructions for the first star in YouTube Tutorial.
