DCStndSt: Note: Can be substituted with (Ch 1, SC, Ch 2), any other chainless DC, or Ch 3. Refer also to YouTube video. Ch 1, SC in first st from previous round, Ch 1, SC in FLO of SC that was just made (i.e. stacking second SC on first SC).

Invis Join: Note: Optional alternate join to Sl St. Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in, return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn through st (from front to back), gently pull yarn end to tighten join.

Tips

  • If a stiffer base is preferred, optionally cut out one or more cardboard circles to fit the base, so that structure of the base is maintained.
  • For a larger base continue to increase the base circle by 12 DC per round. The bag panel round instructions will work for any final base round st count that is a multiple of four.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

  • Beg Ch 1, Beg Sl St and fin Sl St do not count as a st, except where indicated.
  • If preferred, Invis Join can be substituted for pattern Sl St.
  • DCStndSt counts as a DC for st count purposes.
  • Rep st sequence in [ ] the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
  • A st count follows each rnd instructions in ( ).
  • If preferred, from Bag Panel Rnd 3 onwards, the second Sl St of beg three Sl St from prev rnd can be worked into instead of the DC loops that sit behind these.
  • Yarn cols can either be carried upwards on the WS/inside of bag, or these can cut/fastened and re-joined.
  • If changing cols for a rnd, ignore instructions to Sl St across to Ch 1 Sp and instead join new col straight into Ch 1 Sp.
  • Refer to Appendix A for Granny Spike St images.
  • Refer to Appendix B for Col Patterns – change cols accordingly.
  • Refer to Appendix C for pictured Example Project details.

Circular Base

Note: Make two circles for the base.

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first ch.

Rnd 1: DCStndSt, 11 DC in circle, Sl St into first DCStndSt. (12 DC)

Rnd 2: (DCStndSt, DC) in first st, 2 DC in each rem st around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (24 DC)

Rnd 3: (DCStndSt, DC) in first st, DC in next st, [2 DC in next st, DC in next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (36 DC)

Rnd 4: (DCStndSt, DC) in first st, DC in next two st, [2 DC in next st, DC in next two st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (48 DC)

Finishing: Sew in all ends securely.

Join Circles

Place both circles together with WS facing.

Optional: To reinforce base, insert cardboard circle or washable structured circle (with diameter slightly smaller than the crochet circles) between the two circles. Alternatively, a loose cardboard base can be inserted into bottom of bag after it has been constructed.

Surface Sl St with even tension through both circles in each set of corresponding sts around circumference (i.e. inserting hook from top to bottom of stacked circles, first through FL and BL of st in top circle and then through BL and FL of corresponding st in bottom circle).

Granny Spike St Panel

Rnd 1: Note: Work all sts in both loops of Sl St from Join Circles rnd. DCStndSt in first st, DC in each rem st around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (48 DC)

Rnd 2: DCStndSt in first st, DC in next two st, Ch 1, sk next st, [DC in next three st, Ch 1, sk next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (36 DC, 12 Ch 1 Sp)

Rnd 3: Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt in first Ch 1 Sp, DC in corres sk st from two rnds prev (working st in front of Ch 1 Sp), DC in first Ch 1 Sp (Granny Spike St made), Ch 1, sk next three st, [DC in next Ch 1 Sp, DC in corres sk st from two rnds prev (as before), DC in same Ch 1 Sp (Granny Spike St made), Ch 1, sk next three st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (36 DC, 12 Ch 1 Sp)

Rnd 4: Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt in first Ch 1 Sp, DC in middle st of three sk st from two rnds prev (working st in front of Ch 1 Sp), DC in first Ch 1 Sp (Granny Spike St made), Ch 1, sk next three st, [DC in next Ch 1 Sp, DC in middle st of three sk st from two rnds prev (as before), DC in same Ch 1 Sp (Granny Spike St made), Ch 1, sk next three st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (36 DC, 12 Ch 1 Sp)

Rnds 5+: Repeat Round 4 (incorporating col changes as per chosen Appendix C col pattern) until bag is ~3-4cm/1in shy if the required length.

Fin Rnds

Rnd 1: Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt in first Ch 1 Sp, DC2Tog over the middle st of three sk st from two rnds prev (working st in front of Ch 1 Sp) and first Ch 1 Sp, sk next st, DC in next two st, [DC in next Ch 1 Sp, DC2Tog over the middle st of three sk st from two rnds prev (working st in front of Ch 1 Sp) and same Ch 1 Sp, sk next st, DC in next two st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (36 DC, 12 DC2Tog)

Rnd 2: DCStndSt in first st, DC in next two st, Ch 1, sk next st, [DC in next three st, Ch 1, sk next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (36 DC, 12 Ch 1 Sp)

Rnd 3: DCStndSt in first st, DC in each rem st/Ch 1 Sp around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (48 DC)

Rnd 4: Rep Rnd 3.

Rnd 5: Ch 1, SC in first st, sk next st, 5 DC in next st (Shell made), sk next st, [SC in next st, sk next st, 5 DC in next st (Shell made), sk next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (12 SC, 12 Shells)

Finishing: Sew in all ends securely.

Tie

Cut two strands of yarn ~30cm/12in in length.

Flatten bag.

Weave first yarn strand in and out through Ch 1 Sp openings from Fin Rnd 2, around circumference and fin so that beg yarn end and fin yarn end are 3 DC apart. Knot the beg yarn end and fin yarn end together.

Weave second yarn strand in same fashion as first strand but commencing instead in opposite side of bag. Knot ends as prev.

To close bag, pull on both strands together, in opposite directions.

Tie a bow to fasten bag closed.
