Christmas Spirit Crochet Tree
Sweet, textured trees that will bring Christmas spirit to a fireplace mantle, bookshelf, table, or desk.
These trees also make the cutest bunting and ornaments.
Use any yarn that yields a good stitch definition. Try some glittery yarn for seasonal appeal.
The perfect small project to try the modified bead stitch.
Top with a star button and sew on some tiny colourful round beads to the bottom of the modified bead stitches for additional decorative charm. Optionally stuff with chocolate Lindt balls for a fun gift.

DCStndSt: Note: Can be substituted with (Ch 1, SC, Ch 2), any other chainless DC, or Ch 3. Refer also to YouTube video. Ch 1, SC in first st from previous round, Ch 1, SC in FLO of SC that was just made (i.e. stacking second SC on first SC).
Invis Join: Note: Optional alternate join to Sl St. Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in, return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn through st (from front to back), gently pull yarn end to tighten join.
Mod Bead: Note: Refer also to YouTube video. Yo, insert hook in st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), [yo, insert hook between st posts of prev st and current st, yo, pull through a loop (wrapped around current st post)] four times in total (ten loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all ten loops on hook.
SC2Tog: Insert hook through first st, yo, pull through a loop (two loops on hook), insert hook through next st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.
Tips
- Make with single colour or multiple colours. Suggestions for multiple colours include: ombre lighter to darker from top to bottom; different colour for each SC/Mod Bead St repeat section; or one colour for SC rounds and another colour for DC/Mod Bead rounds. Optionally use different colour for trunk.
- If Sl St seam is too obvious either use Invis Join instead of Sl St, or work SC rounds as continuous (i.e. omit fin Sl St and beg Ch 1). If working rounds as continuous it is recommended that a stitch maker is used to keep track of the beginning of each round.
- Stuff/fill 3D trees for best shape/appearance.
- To make tree squatter, omit the SC pattern round that is before the DC/Mod Bead round (i.e. Rounds 4/9/14/19/22).
- To make the tree shorter, omit the last five rounds. Note, the tree base rounds will need to be adjusted for the different tree finishing stitch count.
- If stuffing the tree with chocolates optionally cut one or more cardboard circles to fit the base, to maintain the structure at the base.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- Beg Ch 1 and fin Sl St do not count as a st, except where indicated.
- DCStndSt counts as a DC for st count purposes.
- Rep st sequence in [ ] the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
- A st count follows each round instructions in ( ).
- If making a 2D/flat tree, follow the Tree instructions up to and including Rnd 16, and then the 2D Tree Trunk instructions.
- If making a 3D/standing tree, following the Tree instructions, and then one of the 3D Tree Base options instructions (either Solid or Tie).

Stuff/Fill Tree (optional for 3D, standing tree): Pull beg yarn tail through to WS of tree cone and sew in securely on WS. Stuff the star with suitable poly fill or alternatively fill with chocolate balls until a full and even conical shape is achieved.
Note: If tree has been stuffed with poly fill, next follow 3D Tree Base – Solid Option instructions. If tree has been filled with chocolates, next follow 3D Tree Base – Tie Option instructions.
2D Tree Trunk
Note: For Row 1 work as many SCs as needed to achieve preferred trunk width. Either 4 or 6 SCs are recommended.
Row 1: Ch 1, SC in first st and next 3 or 5 st (depending on preferred width of trunk). (4 or 6 SC)
Row 2: Turn to WS, Ch 1, SC in first st and next 3 or 5 st (depending on preferred width of trunk). (4 or 6 SC)
Rows 3-6: Repeat Row 2 another four times, alternating working on RS and WS.
Finishing: Fasten off yarn leaving tail of sufficient length to sew the last trunk row to the tree base. Flatten the tree so that the trunk is in the middle of the tree, then fold over the trunk in half, so that it is doubled with WS facing in, and the last row is aligned with the first row. Sew the last row of the trunk to the base of the tree (on the opposite side of the tree to where the trunk first row was commenced). Secure ends in the inside of tree.
3D Tree Base – Solid Option
Rnd 1: Ch 1, SC in each st around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (50 SC)

Rnd 7: Ch 1, SC2Tog over first two sts, SC2Tog over next two sts rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC2Tog. (10 SC2Tog)
Rnd 8: Ch 1, SC2Tog over first two sts, SC2Tog over next two sts rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC2Tog. (5 SC2Tog)
Finishing: Fasten off yarn. Sew SC2Tog sts together to close hole. Sew in yarn tail and pull through to inside of tree.
3D Tree Base – Tie Option
Note: If using cardboard base insert, insert this into tree prior to working the tie base.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, SC in each st around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (50 SC)
Rnd 2: Ch 1, SC in first three sts, SC2Tog over next two sts, [SC in next three sts, SC2Tog over next two sts] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (30 SC, 10 SC2Tog)

Rnd 10: Ch 1, SC first st, Ch 1, sk next st, [SC in next st, Ch 1, sk next st] rep around circumference, Sl St into first SC (12 SC, 12 Ch 1 Sp)
Finishing: Fasten off yarn. Sew in yarn tail on WS. Cut two strands of yarn of same length to make a tie for the base. Weave strands (together) in and out through Ch 1 Sp around the circumference until the beg and fin ends of the strands are one SC apart. Adjust beg and fin ends to be of equal length. Cinch base opening closed by pulling on beg and fin ends and then tie the ends into a bow to fasten.
