Inspiration
Coasters are one of my favourite crochet projects to make. They are aesthetically pleasing, quick to make and practical in use and purpose… and a perfect sized project to practice new stitches and techniques. An added bonus is they make the sweetest quick and thoughtful gift… and fun Random Act of Kindness items too.
Once I’d made my first set of coasters, I quickly became hooked. After a busy and stressful day, I very much enjoy winding down with a bite sized project that provides almost instant gratification! Since creating my first coasters my mind has been flooded with new ideas for more coaster designs. Many are still waiting to be written up. It turns out that I am not alone in the DIY coaster obsession – these are constantly trending on Pinterest! We all love a pretty and colourful cuppa/coffee experience!
The Cottagecore Coaster design sat in my design pile for a long time… and when I was asked for additional easier and quicker to make coaster designs, especially those sparing of yarn amount, I knew it was perfect timing to pen the design.
It’s funny how the simple designs that I have had lying around in random design piles for a period of time often end up being the most loved by makers. I’m glad others have enjoyed making these coasters and using them as much as I have.
These coasters use DK/8ply yarn. Use any fibre you like… and I mean it! I do not personally subscribe to ‘you must only use cotton yarn for coasters’ train of thought.
Makers ask me why I use a lot of acrylic yarn for my coasters. I actually love the finish (personally). Plus, acrylics are really quick and easy to work with, and the perfect yarn for beginner crocheters. I have a lot of acrylic scraps and odd balls too… so I originally started making and designing coasters to use all these up.
Pick a non-pill or low-pill acrylic and your coasters will always wash up well. I’ve washed my favourite sets lots of times and they still look great. Dry your coasters flat (on a towel or clean flat surface).
I also personally have never had any issues with moisture wicking with acrylic coasters.
But yes, I do make coasters in cotton or cotton blends too. And funnily enough some of my favourite coasters are made from easy wash wool that was too stiff and scratchy for wear but made for perfect coaster yarn. So, if you have some of those impossible to wear yarns lying around definitely repurpose them to items such as coasters and cozies.
I very much enjoy seeing your finished makes, so thanks for sharing these with me.
