Pattern Details

  • Recommended Yarn: DK/8 ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn ~10g/0.35Oz per coaster. Thinner Worsted yarns may also be suitable. Any fibre/yarn that is easy to wash and does not readily pill (such as cotton, cotton blends, easy wash wool, and non-pill acrylic). Example projects: Refer to Appendix A.
  • Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension. Example projects:  4mm/G.
  • Coaster Size: Varies with chosen yarn and design variant, however approximate size: 11-13cm/4.25-5” in diameter.
  • Skill Level: Upper Intermediate.
  • Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
  • Gauge: Specific gauge not required/not important for this item.
  • Pattern Synopsis: Constructed in the round, commencing with a circle. Texture results from BLO stitches (Rounds 2, 4, 5 and 6) and Star St.    Instructions are provided for both a round and a starburst shaped design, the latter being quicker and easier to make as only one round of Star Stitch is required.

  • 3L = Third Loop. If unfamiliar with location of this loop refer to Appendix B.
  • Beg = Beginning.
  • BL = Back Loop.
  • BLO = Back Loop Only.

  • FL = Front Loop.

Special Stitch Instructions

HDC2Tog

Yo, insert hook through next st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook, yo, insert hook through next st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook, yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Invis Join

Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in, return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn through st (from front to back), gently pull yarn end to tighten join.

Mod Star St

Note:

  • The Mod Star St is used in Round 2 only.
  • The Mod Star St is made with five loops instead of the standard six loops (except for the last star in the round, which has six).
  • All Mod Star St are made in BLO of previous round st. If tension if loose, stitches can instead be worked in both BL and 3L together, to prevent holes/gaps appearing in the coaster.
  • From the second star onwards, the formation of each Mod Star St uses the previous Mod Star St, the second st that the previous Mod Star St was worked in, and the next st in the round.
  • Instructions are provided for First Star, Second Star, Third and Subsequent Stars, and Last Star.
  • To ensure the star has a full appearance, always pull hook upwards a little after the last loop is made on hook, to extend the last two loops lightly, before yo and pulling yarn through all loops on hook.
  • The pattern PDF includes images for the location to pull through the loops.

First Mod Star St

Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following five locations: 1) 2nd ch from hook; 2) 3rd ch from hook; 3) BLO of first st (from which beg Ch 3 was made); and 4) BLO of next st (for 5 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all five loops on hook (star base made), yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (star eye made).

Second Mod Star St

Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following five locations: 1) first star eye; 2) back of the last loop of first star base; 3) BLO of second st that first star was worked into; and 4) BLO of next st (for 5 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all five loops on hook (star base made), yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (star eye made).

Third and Subsequent Mod Star St

Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following five locations: 1) prev star eye; 2) back of the last loop of prev star; 3) BLO of the second st that the prev star was made in; and 4) BLO of next st (for 5 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all five loops on hook (star base made), yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (star eye made).

Last Mod Star St

Star St

Note:

  • The standard Star St is used in Round 5 only.
  • The Star St is made with the standard six loops (except for the last star in the round, which has seven).
  • All Star St are made in BLO of previous round st.

Last Star St

Insert hook (from front to back), yo and pull through a loop in each of the following six locations: 1) prev star eye; 2) back of the last loop of prev star 3) BLO of the last st that the prev star was made in; 4) BLO of next two st (incl first st in the round); 5) eye of first star made in the round (for 7 loops on hook in total). Yo, pull yarn through all seven loops on hook (star base made), yo, pull yarn through loop on hook (star eye made).

Pattern Instructions – Round Design, beg with 10 DC

Note:

  • Instructions for additional designs are included in the pattern PDF:
    • Round coaster design, with option for 12 DC in first round – with construction and st counts differing from the 10 DC design.
    • Starburst coaster design, with options for both 10 DC and 12 DC in first round.
  • Beg Ch 1/Ch 2/Ch 3 are not included in st count, unless indicated.
  • Sl St/Invis Join to complete the round are not included in st count.
  • Ensure that Mod Star St is used for Round 2 and standard Star St is used for Round 5 and same tension is used for all stars in these rounds.
  • Ensure same tension is used for all stars in all star rounds.
  • Refer to YouTube for Round 2, Round 5 and Round 6.
  • If tension is loose, BLO stitches can instead be worked in both BL and 3L together, to prevent holes/gaps appearing in the coaster.
  • Make all stitches within ( ) in the same st from the previous round.
  • { } contains a st sequence that is to be repeated the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
  • A stitch count follows each round instructions in ( ).

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of length sufficient to sew in, make a circle, either using a MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first Ch.

Round 1 – DC: Ch 3, 10 DC in circle, Invis Join to first DC (i.e. sk beg Ch 3). (10 DC)

Round 2 – Mod Star St in BLO: Note: For first Sl St, use both front and back loops of first loop of first star. Ch 3, Mod Star St around circumference using BLO of st from prev round as per Special Stitch Instructions, Sl St loosely into first loop of first star base, Sl St into eye of first star. (10 Mod Star St)

Round 3 – HDC Star Top: Ch 2, 4 HDC in each star eye around (star top made in each star), Invis Join to first HDC (i.e. sk beg Ch 2). (10 Mod Star Tops (40 HDC in total))

Round 4 – DC in BLO: Ch 3, DC in BLO of first three st, 2 DC in BLO of next st, {DC in BLO of next three st, 2 DC in BLO of next st} 9 times in total, Invis Join to first DC (i.e. sk beg Ch 3). (50 DC)

Round 5 – Star St in BLO: Ch 3, Star St around circumference using BLO of st from prev round as per Special Stitch Instructions, Sl St loosely into first loop of first star base, Sl St into eye of first star. (25 Star St)

Round 6 – HDC Star Top: Ch 2, 3 HDC in first star eye (star top made), Sl St into first loop of second star (using both FL and BL of the first star loop), 3 HDC in second star eye (star top made), {Sl St into first loop of next star (as before), 3 HDC in same star eye (star top made)} 23 times, Sl St into first loop of first star, Invis Join to first HDC (i.e. sk beg Ch 2). (25 Star Tops (75 HDC, 25 Sl St in total))

Finishing: Fasten off yarn, leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in. Sew in beg and fin yarn ends securely on reverse of coaster.

Appendix B: Location of 3L (if using)

To access this loop, fold work forwards so that the reverse side/back of the stitches is exposed.

The 3L is located on the reverse side, lying beneath the BL.
