Chunky Crochet Flower

Pattern Details

  • Recommended Yarn: Double-stranded DK/8ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn or Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4 or Chunky/12ply/Cat. 5. Any fibre/yarn that results in a good stitch definition. Pictured flowers: Lincraft Easy Wash Wool (8ply), double-stranded. Refer to Ravelry for additional yarn ideas/project inspiration.
  • Hook Size: For double-stranded DK:5mm/I to 6mm/J. For single-stranded yarn: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension. Pictured flowers: 5.5mm/I.
  • Flower Size: Varies with weight of chosen yarn. Pictured flowers: ~10cm/4in petal to petal.

Abbreviations

  • Beg = Beginning.
  • Ch = Chain.
  • DC = Double Crochet.

Special Stitch Instructions

HTR: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Tips

  • Flowers can be wet blocked and/or starched/stiffened if preferred.
  • For flower magnets add a generous dollop of craft glue to wrong side of flower circle to secure the flower motif to a circular magnet (of either a plastic or wooden surface).

6 Petal Flower

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 3-4 and Sl St into first Ch.

Round 1 – DC: Ch 3 (does not count as a st), 12 DC in circle, Sl St into first DC. (12 DC)

Round 2 – Petals: Ch 3, 2 HTR in first st, Ch 3, Sl St back into first st (first petal made), Sl St into next st twice, {Ch 3, 2 HTR in same st, Ch 3, Sl St back into same st (next petal made), Sl St into next st twice} five times in total (finishing in st that first Ch 3 was made from). (6 petals, 12 Sl St)

Round 3 – Petals: Ch 3, DC in first Ch 3 Sp, 2 DC in next two st, DC in next Ch 3 Sp, Ch 3, Sl St back into first st from Round 1 (first petal made), Sl St into next st from Round 1 twice (over the top of Round 2 st), {Ch 3, DC in next Ch 3 Sp, 2 DC in next two st, DC in next Ch 3 Sp, Ch 3, Sl St back into same st petal commenced in (next petal made), Sl St into next st from Round 1 twice (as before)} five times in total (finishing in st that first Ch 3 was made from). Finishing: Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in. Optional: Surface Sl St in each Round 1 st around centre circle. Sew in yarn ends securely on the reverse side of the flower.

5 Petal Flower

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 3-4 and Sl St into first Ch.

Round 1 – DC: Ch 3 (does not count as a st), 10 DC in circle, Sl St into first DC. (10 DC)

Round 2 – Petals: Ch 3, 2 HTR in first st, Ch 3, Sl St back into first st (first petal made), Sl St into next st twice, {Ch 3, 2 HTR in same st, Ch 3, Sl St back into same st (next petal made), Sl St into next st twice} four times in total (finishing in st that first Ch 3 was made from).
