Rustic Star Motif

Sweet little stars that are a perfect combo of Boho and rustic!

The perfect quick Christmas project, made in only 3 – 4 rounds in total, using any DK or Worsted yarn scraps.

Make pretty Christmas decorations or Christmas bunting.

The stars can be made single-sided or double-sided.

Pattern Details

• Recommended Yarn: DK/8 ply/Cat. 3 weight or Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4 weight. Acrylic non-pill, wool, cotton, or blends of these fibres. ~5-15g/0.2-0.5oz of yarn per motif. Example projects: Lincraft Superwash Yarn (8ply wool) in Mustard and Beige.
• Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension. Example projects: 4mm/G.
• Size: Varies with weight and brand of chosen yarn, chosen hook size, personal tension and number of rounds completed.
• Skill Level: Intermediate.
• Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
• Gauge: Specific gauge not required/not important for this item.
• Pattern Synopsis: Instructions are provided for five-pointed and six-pointed star motifs. The stars are constructed in the round, commencing with modified Puff stitches in the first round, and continuing with Popcorn stitches in the second round, to give the star centre a pretty texture. The star points are made in either one or two rounds (depending on chosen design). JAYG option is provided for quick construction of double-sided stars.

Abbreviations

• ~ = Approximately.
• Beg = Beginning.
• Beg PC = Beginning PC (first PC in the round). Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
• BL = Back Loop.
• Ch = Chain.
• DC = Double Crochet.
• Fin = Finishing.
• FL = Front Loop.
• FpDC = Front Post Double Crochet.
• FpHDC = Front Post Half Double Crochet.
• HDC = Half Double Crochet.
• HTR = Half Treble Crochet. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
• Invis Join = Invisible Join. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
• JAYG = Join As You Go (method of joining the second motif to the first motif whilst constructing the second motif).

Special Stitch Instructions

Beg PC: Ch 3 (counts as a DC), 3 DC in same st, remove yarn loop from hook, insert hook through both FL and BL of third ch of beg Ch 3 (from front to back), return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

HTR: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.

Invis Join: Note: Can be substituted with Sl St. Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front (through BL and then FL) of st that join is to be made in, return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn through st (from front to back), gently pull yarn end to tighten join.

PC: Note: Make either a Standard PC or a Modified PC, according to preference. The only difference for the Modified PC is a yo before finishing the PC. 4 DC in same st, remove yarn loop from hook, insert hook through both FL and BL of first DC (from front to back), return yarn loop to hook, pull yarn loop through all loops on hook.

Puff: Note: The instructions are for a modified Puff. Insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (two loops on hook), yo, insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop (six loops on hook), yo, insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop (eight loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first seven loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

TR: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Tips

• Stars can be made with single yarn colour or multiple yarn colours.
• Stars can be constructed with or without a hanging loop.
• To construct star bunting, make the preferred number of motifs, commence bunting chain string with a length of chain stitches, crochet through one star point of each motif to join motif to bunting chain string, joining the motifs at regular intervals along the bunting chain string, and then finish with an equivalent length of chain stitches as the bunting chain string was commenced with.
• For best finish for star ornaments block and/or starch the finished stars. This is primarily recommended for single-sided star ornaments and bunting.
• An additional DC can be made for each PC (i.e. five DCs in total per PC) if a fuller appearance is preferred.
• For thicker/denser yarns, Puffs can be made with one less yo if the centre of the star appears too full.
• 7-point stars can also be made, by commencing with 7 Puff/7 Ch 2 Sp, and adjusting the rep number for the following rnds accordingly.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

• Beg Ch 1, beg Sl St, and fin Sl St do not count as a st.
• Beg PC counts as a PC for st count purposes.
• Where multiple sts are contained within ( ) in the pattern instructions, these sts should all be made in a single st from the prev rnd.
• Rep st sequence in [ ] the number of times specified by the pattern instructions. The rep number is provided as ‘rep <5-point star rep number>/<6-point star rep number> times in total’.
• A st count follows each rnd instructions in ( ), in the format (5-point star st count/6-point st count).

Star Motif

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in, make a circle with either MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first ch.

Rnd 1: Ch 1, [Puff in circle, Ch 2] rep 5/6 times in total, Sl St into first Puff. (5 Puff, 5 Ch 2 Sp/6 Puff, 6 Ch 2 Sp)

Rnd 2: Sl St across to first Ch 2 Sp, Beg PC in first Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, PC again in first Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, sk next Puff, [PC in next Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, PC again in same Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, sk next Puff] rep 4/5 times in total, Sl St into Beg PC. (10 PC, 10 Ch 2 Sp/12 PC, 12 Ch 2 Sp)

Rnd 3: Sl St across to first Ch 2 Sp, Ch 1, SC in first Ch 2 Sp, sk next PC, (HDC, DC, HTR, TR) in next Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, (TR, HTR, DC, HDC) in same Ch 2 Sp (Star Point made), sk next PC, [SC in next Ch 2 Sp, sk next PC, (HDC, DC, HTR, TR) in next Ch 2 Sp, Ch 2, (TR, HTR, DC, HDC) in same Ch 2 Sp (Star Point made)] rep 4/5 times in total, Invis Join into first SC. (5 SC, 5 Star Points/6 SC, 6 Star Points)

Optional Rnd 4: Refer to Ravelry PDF.

Finishing: Fasten off yarn with sufficient length to sew in securely. Using a darning needle sew in all yarn ends securely on WS of motif. Optionally tie a hang loop in one of the star points.

Easy Double-Sided Star Option

Note: These stars are not intended to be filled with stuffing/poly fill as there will be gaps between sts where the stuffing will show.

Make two stars and then sew them together, WS facing.
