Pattern Details
- Size: Size to preference. Refer to Appendix B for sizing including Sizing Guide Table (child to adult).
- Skill Level: Advanced beginner (skull cap) to intermediate (optional bonus flower appliques).
- Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations for stitches used.
- Recommended Yarn: 10 ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight yarn. Refer to Appendix A for example projects made with Worsted yarn. Note: Yarns of other weight can also be used, however, additional reduction rounds may be required in addition to those provided in the instructions.
- Hook: 5.5-6mm/I–J, depending on chosen yarn and individual tension. Swatch to determine the most suitable hook size. The skull cap should have some stretch/positive ease.
- Gauge: Not important for this item. Instead, ensure FSC st count is consistent with Appendix B skull cap circumference.
- Pattern Synopsis: Skull cap is constructed bottom up (to peak), using V-St and then a brim is added separately after. Multiple brim options are available in pattern instructions. Optional flower applique can be added for some extra charm. The flower applique instructions are available in the paid pdf only.

Decrease Round 4: Sl St into sp btwn first and second st posts, DCStndSt in sp btwn first and second st posts, {DC in sp btwn st posts of next set of two st} rep around circumference, Sl St into beg DCStndSt. [n/8 DC]
Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in securely.
Brim
Either work one of the simple brim options below or a brim of your own design.
Brim Option 1

Optional Final Round: Ch 1, Crab St/Spn St in each st around the circumference, Sl St into first Crab St/Spn St. [n Crab St/Spn St.]
Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in securely.
Or Brim Option 2
Round 1: With RS facing join yarn in base of first FSC, Ch 1, FpHDC around the st post of each st around the circumference, Sl St into first FpHDC. [n FpHDC]
Round 2: Note: This round can be repeated if additional length required. Ch 1, FpHDC around the st post of each st around the circumference, Sl St into first FpHDC. [n FpHDC]
Optional Final Round: Crab St/Spn St around the st post of each st around the circumference, Sl St into first SC/Crab St/Spn St. [n front post SC/Crab St/Spn St.]
Fasten off yarn leaving a yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in securely.

ADDITIONAL PROJECTS:
Appendix B: Basic Sizing
The appropriate skull cap size can be determined by using:
- The Sizing Guide Table below, or
- The Approximate Personalised Sizing Method.
Sizing Guide Table
- The table below is based on The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) skull cap length).
- To size the skull cap, first determine the number of relaxed FSC that equate to the table Circumference, and then adjust the st count to the nearest factor of four.
Skull Cap Size | Skull Cap Circumference | Skull Cap Length (including brim) | ||
Inches | Cm | Inches | Cm | |
Child | 18 – 20 | 45.5 – 51.0 | 6.7 – 7.3 | 17.0 – 18.5 |
Tween | 20 – 22 | 51.0 – 56.0 | 7.3 – 7.8 | 18.5 – 20.0 |
Woman | 21 – 23 | 53.0 – 58.5 | 7.3 – 8.3 | 18.5 – 21.0 |
Man | 22 – 24 | 56.0 – 61.0 | 7.7 – 8.7 | 19.5 – 22.0 |
Approximate Personalised Sizing Method
Circumference measure: Determine the number of relaxed FSC that fit around the person’s head. Or ask the person to measure their head circumference using a tape measure and then determine the number of relaxed FSC that are equivalent to this tape measure circumference. Adjust the FSC count to the nearest factor of four.
Length measure: Use a tape measure, or ask the person to use a tape measure, to measure the length from just above the person’s brow to their crown.
