Appendix A: Example Project

Light Brown – Yarn/Hook: Red Heart Worsted Yarn (Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4) using ~30g/1Oz per mitt, with a 5mm hook. CFSC: 26. Simple Upper Trim: 3 rounds SC BLO. Simple Cuff: 1 round FpSC, 4 rounds of SC BLO. Circumference: 20cm/~8”. Length: ~18cm/7”.

Appendix B: Ribbed Trim/Cuff (intermediate)

The simple SC BLO Trim/Cuff can be substituted with a Ribbed Trim/Cuff.

Note:

  • Rib Trim/Cuff is constructed as rows (RS and WS alternating) that are joined on one edge to the last mitt round for the trim or CFSC round for the cuff.
  • Rib Trim/Cuff can be shortened/lengthened by decreasing/increasing the number of beg chains.
  • Sl St in Row 1 and Row 3 repeat are not counted as a st for st count purposes.
  • First 2 Ch in Row 1 count as Ch 2 Sp.
  • If preferred, beg Ch 1 for Row 3 repeat can be substituted with beg Ch 2.
  • If the Trim/Cuff works up too loose, then work these rows with a smaller hook size or with a tighter tension.
  • If left-handed, then substitute ‘clockwise’ for instructions ‘counter-clockwise’.

Ribbed Trim

Row 1 – RS: Ch 5, HDC in third Ch from hook, HDC in next two Ch, Sl St into CFSC that is one st counter-clockwise from the CFSC that the beg Ch 5 originated from,  Sl St into next CFSC (counter-clockwise). (Ch 2 Sp, 3 HDC)

Row 2 – WS: Turn trim to WS, FpHDC around next three st, HDC in Ch 2 Sp. (3 FpHDC, HDC)

Row 3 – RS: Turn trim to RS, Ch 1, sk first st, FpHDC around next three st, Sl St into CFSC one stitch counter-clockwise from CFSC last worked into, Sl St into next CFSC (counter-clockwise). (Ch 1 Sp, 3 FpHDC)

Row 4 – WS: Turn trim to WS, FpHDC around next three st, HDC in Ch 1 Sp. (3 FpHDC, HDC)

Additional Rows: Repeat Rows 3 and 4, around the entire CFSC circumference, until the edges of the brim are touching/almost touching.

Finishing: Seam the edges of the ribbed brim by either sewing these together on WS using a darning needle, or Sl St both edges together on WS, back towards and into the foundation round. Fasten off yarn and sew in end securely.

Ribbed Cuff

Row 1 – RS: Join yarn in first CFSC, Ch 7 (away from the CFSC round), HDC in third Ch from hook, HDC in next four Ch, Sl St into CFSC that is one st counter-clockwise from the CFSC that the beg Ch 7 originated from,  Sl St into next CFSC (counter-clockwise). (Ch 2 Sp, 5 HDC)

Row 2 – WS: Turn cuff to WS, FpHDC around next five st, HDC in Ch 2 Sp. (5 FpHDC, HDC)

Row 3 – RS: Turn cuff to RS, Ch 1, sk first st, FpHDC around next five st, Sl St into foundation stitch one stitch counter-clockwise from foundation stitch last worked into, Sl St into next foundation stitch (counter-clockwise). (Ch 1 Sp, 5 FpHDC)

Row 4 – WS: Turn cuff to WS, FpHDC around next five st, HDC in Ch 1 Sp. (5 FpHDC, HDC)

Additional Rows: As per Trim instructions.

Finishing: As per Trim instructions.
