Arthouse Beanie is a beginner level 70’s inspired beanie that can be made as a snug skull-cap, or roomy or slouchy beanie. Made from basic stitches using Worsted weight yarn, it works up very quickly. The design is yarn-sparing and a great way to stash  bust. Use one colour, multiple or ombre for different effect.

Pattern Details

  • Size: OSFM adult woman/teen/tween:·  ~54cm/21.3”circumference at brim (relaxed, with some positive ease), and ~23cm/9” in length (brim to peak). Refer also to Appendix B for tips on adjusting the size.
  • Skill Level: Advanced beginner (beanie) to intermediate (optional bonus flower applique).
  • Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations for stitches used.
  • Recommended Yarn: 10 ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight, ~70g/2.5Oz. (Yarns of other weight can be used; however, the foundation round stitch count will need to be adjusted – Refer to Appendix B for resizing tips. Refer to Appendix A for example projects.
  • Hook: 5.5-6mm/I-J, depending on chosen yarn and individual tension. Swatch to determine most suitable hook size.
  • Gauge: Beg CFSC round should equal ~54cm/21.3”. Also refer to Tips.
  • Pattern Synopsis: Beanie is constructed bottom up (to peak), using both FpDC and DC Shells. Beanie is finished with a round of SC, Spin Stitch or Crab Stitch to neaten the finish of the foundation round, or optionally a brim can be added (beginner and intermediate level examples in Appendix C of Ravelry pattern instructions). Optional flower applique (Ravelry instructions) can be added for some extra charm.

Tips

  • For an average sized adult women’s beanie, check that your gauge approximates the Pattern Details If not, adjust tension, and/or hook size to approximately meet the gauge.
    • If the circumference is measuring significantly wider or narrower consider increasing or decreasing the foundation stitch count by a factor of six stitches. Refer also to Appendix B Basic Resizing Tips. When finishing the beanie either cinch the additional st or work an additional reduction round.
    • If the circumference is slightly wider or narrower the circumference can be modified when adding the finishing round or brim, by working several reduction or increase stitches evenly around the circumference, or by working the finishing round or brim with a slightly bigger hook. If the circumference is slightly narrower but the chosen yarn has some positive ease when worked up, finishing round/brim modifications may not be needed.
  • If tension is on the tighter side, then work in BLO instead of BL+3L.

Appendix B: Basic Resizing Tips

Before making the beanie to a custom size, practice making a beanie according to the standard pattern.

The beanie can be adjusted in size by one or more of:

  • Using yarn of a different weight,
  • Increasing or decreasing the starting st count,
  • Increasing or decreasing the total number of rounds (including decrease rounds).

The Sizing Guide Table (below) has been formulated with consideration of The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) beanie length. To make a fitted beanie use the table listed Beanie Length as a guide. To make a slouchy beanie add at least 2-3cm or an inch to the table listed length. (For example, beanies made with Worsted weight yarn using the standard pattern will be approximately 23cm/9in in length, which is perfect for an adult woman sized beanie.) When making a beanie for a toddler decrease rounds 2 and 4 should be omitted.

Sizing Guide Table

Beanie Size Beanie Circumference Beanie Length (incl. brim)
Inches Cm Inches Cm
Toddler 16 – 18 40.5 – 46.0 7.0 – 7.5 18.0 – 19.0
Child 18 – 20 45.5 – 51.0 7.5 – 8.0 19.0 – 20.5
Tween 20 – 22 51.0 – 56.0 8.0 – 8.5 20.5 – 21.5
Woman 21 – 23 53.0 – 58.5 8.0 – 9.0 20.5 – 23.0

Approximate Personalised Sizing Method

Determine the relaxed number of chains that fit around the person’s head. Or ask the person to measure their head circumference using a tape measure, and then determine the number of relaxed CFSC that are equivalent to this tape measure circumference. Adjust the st count to the nearest factor of six.
