Vintage Chic Coasters

Cute, retro crochet coasters that are quick and easy to make. Enjoy a practical and satisfying project, perfect for rediscovering lost crojo. These coasters make lovely gifts and are also perfect for market stall stock.

Pattern Details

• Recommended Yarn: DK/8 ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn or Worsted/10 ply/Cat. 4 weight yarn ~8-15g/0.3-0.4Oz per coaster. Any fibre/yarn that is easy to wash and does not readily pill (such as cotton, cotton blends, easy wash wool, and non-pill acrylic). Example Project: Fiddlesticks Superb 8 Ply, Mustard Yellow, ~8g/0.4Oz. Refer also to Ravelry Projects.
• Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension. Example Project: 3.5mm/E.
• Coaster Size: Varies with weight of chosen yarn/number of petals constructed. Example Project: ~12-13cm/4.75-5” in diameter.
• Skill Level: Advanced (Adventurous) Beginner to Intermediate.
• Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
• Gauge: Specific gauge not required/not important for this item.
• Pattern Synopsis: Constructed in the round, commencing with a DC circle. Rounds 2 and 3 extend the circle diameter. Rounds 4 and 5 construct the shell petals, using cluster stitches and DC shells. Appendix A in Ravelry pdf includes instructions for optional variations and optional Round 6.

Abbreviations

Note: A subset of the stitches listed below are required for the basic design. Some of the stitches listed below are only used in Round 5 optional variations and an optional Round 6.

• ~ = Approximately.
• 2TRCl = Triple Crochet Cluster St. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
• 3LO = 3^rd Loop Only.
• Beg = Beginning.
• BL = Back Loop.
• Btwn = Between.
• FL = Front Loop.
• FpSC = Front Post Single Crochet (constructed around the front of the stitch post).
• Ch = Chain.
• DC = Double Crochet.
• Fin = Finishing.
• HDC = Half Double Crochet.
• HTR = Half Triple Crochet. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
• Invis Join = Invisible Join. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions and YouTube.
• MC = Magic Circle.
• Puff = Puff St. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
• Rep = Repeat.
• SC = Single Crochet.
• Sk = Skip.
• Sp = Space.
• Sl St = Slip Stitch.
• St = Stitch.

• Yo = Yarn over (hook).

Special Stitch Instructions

• 2TRCL: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo twice, insert hook through same st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (four loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.
• HTR: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through all three loops on hook.
• Invis Join: Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front through both BL and FL of st that join is to be made in, put removed loop back on hook, pull loop through st (from front to back). Gently pull yarn end to tighten join.
• TR: Yo twice, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop, yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.
• Puff: Note: The instructions below are for a modified Puff St. Yo, insert hook through st, yo, pull through a loop (three loops on hook), *yo, insert hook back through same st as before, pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook), rep from * once more (seven loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through first six loops on hook (two loops on hook), yo, pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

• Beg Ch 1/Ch 2 and fin Invis Join/Sl St do not count as a st for st count purposes nor as a st to be worked into in subsequent round.
• At the end of each of the first three rounds, push the beg Ch 2 towards the back of the circle so that it is less visible on the right side of the coaster.
• [ ] represents a st sequence that is to be repeated the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
• St count follows each round instructions in ( ).

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of length sufficient to sew in, make a circle, either using a MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first Ch.

Round 1: Ch 2, 12 DC in beg circle, Invis Join into first DC. (12 DC)

Round 2: Ch 2, 2 DC in each st around, Invis Join into first DC. (24 DC)

Round 3: Ch 2, 2 DC in first st, DC in next st, [2 DC in next st, DC in next st] rep 11 times in total, Invis Join into first DC. (36 DC)

Round 4: Ch 4, TR in first st (counts as first 2TRCl), Ch 4, 2TRCl in first st (first 2TRCl V made), [Ch 1, sk next three st, (2TRCl, Ch 4, 2TRCl) in next st (next 2TRCl V made)] rep 8 times in total, Ch 1, sk last three st, Invis Join into first TR. (9 2TRCl V, 9 Ch 1 Sp)

Round 5: Ch 1, FpSC around first 2TRCl, 7 DC in next Ch 4 Sp (first Shell made), FpSC around next 2TRCl, SC in next Ch 1 Sp, [FpSC around next 2TRCl, 7 DC in next Ch 4 Sp (next Shell made), FpSC around next 2TRCl, SC in next Ch 1 Sp] rep 8 times in total, Invis Join into first FpSC. (9 Shell, 9 FpSC, 9 SC)

Finishing: Fasten off yarn, leaving a yarn tail of length sufficient to sew in. Sew in beg and fin yarn ends securely on reverse of coaster.
