Vintage Chic Coasters are cute retro coasters that are easy to make and positively fly off the hook.

Great for gifts, donations and market stall stock.

Pattern Details

  • Recommended Yarn: DK/8 ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn or  Worsted/10 ply/Cat. 4 weight yarn ~8-15g/0.3-0.4Oz per coaster. Any fibre/yarn that is easy to wash and does not readily pill (such as cotton, cotton blends, easy wash wool, and non-pill acrylic). Example Project: Fiddlesticks Superb 8 Ply, Mustard Yellow, ~8g/0.4Oz.
  • Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension. Example Project: 3.5mm/E.
  • Coaster Size: Varies with weight of chosen yarn. Example Project: ~12-13cm/4.7-5.1” in diameter from petal to petal.
  • Skill Level: Advanced (Adventurous) Beginner to Intermediate.
  • Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
  • Gauge: Specific gauge not required/not important for this item.
  • Pattern Synopsis: Constructed in the round, commencing with a DC circle. Rounds 2 and 3 extend the circle diameter. Rounds 4 and 5 construct the flower petals, using cluster stitches and DC shells.

Abbreviations

  • 3LO = 3rd Loop Only. Optional 6th round only.
  • Beg = Beginning.
  • FpSC = Front Post Single Crochet (constructed around the front of the stitch post).
  • Ch = Chain.
  • DC = Double Crochet.
  • Fin = Finishing.
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet.
  • HTR = Half Triple Crochet. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
  • MC = Magic Circle.
  • Puff = Optional 6th round only.
  • Rem = Remaining.
  • SC = Single Crochet.
  • Sk = Skip.
  • Sp = Space.
  • Sl St = Slip Stitch.
  • St = Stitch.
  • TR = Triple Crochet. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
  • TR2Cl = Triple Crochet Cluster St. Refer to Special Stitch Instructions.
  • Yoh = Yarn over hook.

Special Stitch Instructions

  • HTR: Yoh twice, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through a loop, yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through rem loops on hook.
  • Invisible Join: Note: Sl St can be substituted if preferred, however the invisible join will provide a better finish.Remove loop from hook, insert hook from back to front through both loops of st join is to be made in, put removed loop back on hook, pull loop through st (from front to back), gently pull yarn end to tighten join.
  • TR: Yoh twice, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through a loop, yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through rem loops on hook.
  • TR2CL: Yoh twice, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through a loop, yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (two loops rem), yoh twice, insert hook through same st, yoh, pull through a loop, yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (four loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (three loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through rem loops on hook.
  • Puff (3): Yoh, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through loop (three loops on hook), *yoh, insert hook back through same st as before, pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook)* two times in total (seven loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first six loops on hook (two loops rem), yoh, pull yarn through rem loops on hook.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

  • Beg Ch 1 / Ch 2 and fin Invisible Join / Sl St do not count as a st for st count purposes nor as a st to be worked into in subsequent round.
  • At the end of each of the first three rounds, push the beg Ch 2 towards the back of the circle so that it is less visible on the right side of the coaster.
  • * * represents a st sequence that is to be repeated the number of times specified by the pattern instructions.
  • St count follows each round instructions in ( ).

Beg Circle: Leaving a beg yarn tail of length sufficient to sew in, make a circle, either using a MC, or Ch 3 or 4 and Sl St into first Ch.

Round 1 – DC: Ch 2, 12 DC in beg circle, Invisible Join into first DC (sk beg Ch 2). (12 DC)

Round 2 – DC: Ch 2, 2 DC in each st around, Invisible Join into first DC (sk beg Ch 2). (24 DC)

Round 3 – DC: Ch 2, 2 DC in first st, DC in next st, *2 DC in next st, DC in next st* 11 times in total, Invisible Join into first DC (sk beg Ch 2). (36 DC)

Round 4 – TR2Cl V: Ch 4, TR in first st (counts as first TR2Cl), Ch 4, TR2Cl in first st (first TR2Cl V made), *Ch 1, sk three st, (TR2Cl, Ch 4, TR2Cl) in next st (next TR2Cl V made)* 8 times in total, Ch 1, sk last three st, Invisible Join into first TR (sk beg Ch 4). (9 TR2Cl V, 9 Ch 1 Sp)

Round 5 – DC Shell: Ch 1, FpSC around first TR2Cl, 7 DC (Shell) in next Ch 4 Sp, FpSC around next TR2Cl, SC in next Ch 1 Sp, *FpSC around next TR2Cl, 7 DC (Shell) in next Ch 4 Sp, FpSC around next TR2Cl, DC in next Ch 1 Sp* 8 times in total, Invisible Join into first FpSC (sk beg Ch 1). (9 Shell, 9 FpSC, 9 SC)

Finishing: Fasten off yarn, leaving a yarn tail of length sufficient to sew in. Sew in beg and fin yarn ends securely on reverse of coaster.

  • Round 4:  Puff – Puff instead of first DC and then replacing each fourth DC around.
  • Round 5: No post st – Work SC instead of FpSC.

  • Round 5: Taller Shell – Work HTR or TR instead of DC for 7 st Shell.
  • Round 5: Wider Shell – Work 9 st Shell instead of 7 st Shell.
  • Round 6 (additional round): Sl St across to 3LO of first DC, Ch 1, HDC in 3LO of first DC, HDC in 3LO of next six st (Shell made), sk next FpSC, Puff into next Ch 1 Sp from Round 4 (over top of SC), *sk next FpSC, HDC in 3LO of next seven st (Shell made), sk next FpSC, Puff into next Ch 1 Sp from Round 4* 8 times in total, Invisible Join into first HDC (sk beg Ch 1).
