A super cute solid heart motif that can be used as an applique, for decorative items such as fridge magnets, and for bunting.
Pattern Details
- Recommended Yarn: DK/8 ply/Cat. 3 weight yarn, ~3g/0.1Oz per motif. Cotton, acrylic, or blends of these fibres. Example project: Lincraft Makr cotton (Coral shade). Refer to Ravelry for additional yarn ideas / project inspiration.
- Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension.
- Motif Size: ~6.5cm/2.5in at the maximum width of the heart.
- Skill Level: Advanced (adventurous) beginner to intermediate.
- Stitch Terminology: US. Refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions.
- Gauge: Specific gauge not required/not important for this item.
- Pattern Synopsis: Constructed in the round, commencing with a circle. Round 1 constructs a small heart from st of varied size. Round 2 uses textured st to increase the size of the solid heart. Round 3 adds a SC border to finish the heart off neatly.
- Other Materials: Darning needle. Optional: Round magnets ~1cm/0.75in in diameter and craft glue (suitable for material and plastic) if making a heart magnet.

Special Stitch Instructions
- DCCL: Yoh, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through a loop (3 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (2 loops on hook), yoh, insert hook through same st as previous, yoh, pull through a loop (4 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (3 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through remaining three loops on hook.
- HTR: Yoh twice, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through a loop (four loops on hook), yoh, pull through first two loops on hook (three loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through remaining three loops on hook.
- TR: Yoh twice, insert hook through st, yoh, pull through a loop (4 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (3 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through first two loops on hook (2 loops on hook), yoh, pull yarn through remaining two loops on hook.
Tips
- Use Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4 yarn for a bigger heart.
- Motifs can be Sl St into chain st bunting, glued onto magnets, or used as an applique to other items.
- A small heart motif can be glued to the side of a medium sized heart motif. Refer to Appendix 2 for finishing with a small heart.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- DCCl counts as a DC for st count purposes.
- Beg Ch 1 and fin Sl St do not count as a st for st count purposes.
- St count is provided in brackets () following each round instructions.
Beg Circle
Leaving a beg yarn tail of ~5cm/~2in, make a circle, either using a MC, or Ch 4 and Sl St into first Ch.
Round 1 – Small Heart
Note: The second side of the heart is a mirror of the first side.
Ch 3, (2 TR, HTR, 2 DC) into beg circle, Ch 1, HTR into beg circle, Ch 1, (2 DC, HTR, 2 TR) into beg circle, Ch 3, Sl St into beg circle. If using MC, pull circle taut.(2 Ch 3, 4 TR, 3 HTR, 4 DC, 2 Ch 1)
Round 2 – Medium Sized Heart
Note: This round is constructed working both btwn two consecutive st (refer to Appendix 1 images) and around the st post of each st – first between and then around. As for the first round, the second side of the heart is a mirror of the first side.
Ch 3, DC in first Ch 3 Sp, FpDC around first TR, DCCl btwn first two TRs, FpDC around second TR, DCCl btwn second TR and first HTR, FpDC around first HTR, DCCl btwn first HTR and first DC, FpDC around first DC, DCCl btwn first two DCs, FpDC around second DC, DCCl in next Ch 1 Sp, FpHTR around second (middle) HTR, DCCl in next Ch 1 Sp, FpDC around third DC, DCCl btwn third and fourth DCs, FpDC around fourth DC, DCCl btwn fourth DC and third HTR, FpDC around third HTR, DCCl btwn third HTR and third TR, FpDC around third TR, DCCl btwn third and fourth TRs, FpDC around fourth TR, DC in next Ch 2 Sp, Ch 3, Sl St into beg circle. Note: Work all SCs with firm and consistent tension. If preferred, Appendix 2 Pattern Variation can be followed.
Ch 1, 2 SC in first Ch 3 Sp (working from base to top), 2 SC in each subsequent st around until reaching FpHTR, (SC, Ch 1, SC) in FpHTR, 2 SC in each subsequent st around until reaching last Ch 3 Sp, 2 SC over Ch 3 Sp (working from top to base), Sl St into beg SC. (50 SC, Ch 1 Sp)
Finishing
Fasten off yarn leaving a fin yarn tail of ~5cm/~2in. Sew in ends on WS. If making a magnet glue magnet onto WS of heart using a generous dollop of glue.
