Pattern Details
- Size: Size to preference. Refer to Sizing Guide Table as a guide. Can be made fitted or slouchy beanie by adjusting the length.
- Skill Level: Advanced Beginner.
- Stitch Terminology: US – refer also to Abbreviations.
- Recommended Yarn: Any 8ply/DK/Cat. 3 or 10 ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight yarn. Suited to any fibre type that yields a good stitch definition (i.e., avoid fluffy, feathery, or textured yarns).
- Hook: Follow yarn label as a guide or use your preferred hook. Make a swatch(es) and adjust hook if/ as necessary to achieve the preferred density of crochet fabric.
- Gauge: No set gauge required – ensure beanie circumference and length approximates the Sizing Guide Table, for the chosen yarn, hook, and tension. Gauge for example beanies is provided for reference only.
- Pattern Synopsis: Reversible beanie that is constructed working in rounds, from top to bottom, to form a cylinder of crochet fabric that is finished with a simple brim. The texture results from a repeating pattern of front post DC and regular DC stitches. The top opening of the beanie cylinder is then cinched together by weave stitching the long beginning yarn tail with a needle all around the circumference of the foundation round, and then pulling taut. Wear beanie ‘right’ side or ‘wrong’ side, according to preference.

Ch 3 may also be substituted for this st. (Without first making a Ch 1), SC in first st, Ch 1, SC in FLO of SC (that was just made).
- FpDCStndSt: Note: This stitch is DC height and counts as a FpDC stitch for stitch count purposes. Any standing stitch method can be substituted for this beginner level method. FpSC and Ch 2 may also be substituted for this st. Ch 1, FpSC around first st, Ch 1, SC in FLO of SC (that was just made).

FpSC and Ch 3 may also be substituted for this st. Ch 1, FpSC around first st, Ch 1, SC in FLO of FpSC (that was just made), (without first Ch 1) SC in FLO of SC (that was just made).
Tips
- When making a Sl St to complete each round, ensure this Sl St is made with a tight tension to ensure the seam is not obvious.
- For less yarn usage per beanie, substitute pattern FpHTR stitches with FpDC stitches, and pattern FpHTRStndSt stitches with FpDCStndSt stitches.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- DCStndSt to commence round is included in DC stitch count.
- FpHTRStndSt to commence round is included in FpHTR stitch count.
- Ch 1 to commence round and Sl St to complete round are not included in the stitch count for this round.
- The textured pattern results from a modified Alpine Stitch (for quicker make) using the following two round repeat:
- One round of FpHTR followed by DC, repeated every two stitches.
- One round of DC followed by FpHTR, repeated every two stitches.
- For a guide to beanie sizing refer to Appendix A: Beanie Sizing Guide.
Beanie Foundation Rounds
Round 1: Note: Refer to Appendix A: Beanie Sizing Guide for a guide to sizing the beanie circumference. Leaving a long yarn tail of approximately 40cm/18in, FSCƚ a multiple of 2 (ensuring the last FSC is joined at the base to the first FSC), Sl St into first SC (to form a closed circle).
ƚAlternatively, work a foundation Ch round and subsequent SC round, as follows:
- Ch a multiple of 2, Sl St into first Ch (to form a closed circle).
- Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent Ch around, Sl St into first SC.
Round 2: DCStndSt in first st, DC in each subsequent st around circumference, Sl St into DCStndSt. (Stitch Count: DC = FSC st count.)
Beanie Pattern Rounds
First Repeat
Round 3: FpHTRStndSt around first st, *DC in next st, FpHTR around next st, rep from * around circumference until last st, DC in last st, Sl St into FpDCStndSt. (Stitch Count: FpHTR = FSC st count/2, DC = FSC st count/2.)
Round 4: DCStndSt in first st, *FpHTR around next st, DC in next st, rep from * around circumference until last st, FpHTR around last st, Sl St into DCStndSt.(Stitch Count: DC = FSC st count/2, FpHTR = FSC st count/2.)
Additional repeats
Note: Refer to Appendix A: Beanie Sizing Guide for a guide to sizing the beanie length.
Repeat Rounds 3 and 4 until the beanie is equal to the required beanie length minus a brim (allowing approximately 2cm/0.75in – 3.5cm/1.5in in length for the brim).
The beanie can be finished after either round of the pattern repeat.
Beanie Brim Rounds
Note: Work one of the following brim options only. ‘RS’ side brim can be worked on ‘RS’ beanie. Alternatively, after first reversing beanie, ‘RS’ side brim can be worked on ‘WS’ beanie.
Option 1 – SC
Note: Brim can be worked in both loops or instead in BLO.
Round 1: Ch 1, SC in first and each subsequent st around circumference, Sl St into first SC. (Stitch Count: SC = FSC st count)
Round 2+: Rep Round 1 as many times as required to achieve the preferred brim length and overall beanie length. Fasten off yarn leaving yarn tail of sufficient length to sew in.
OR Option 2 – HDC in 3LO – refer to Ravelry pdf.
Or Option 3 – Simple HDC Rib (Rounds) – refer to Ravelry pdf.
Or Option 4 – Intermediate HDC Rib (Rows) – refer to Ravelry pdf.
Finishing
Use a darning needle, weave the beg tail of yarn in and out of the entire foundation round circumference, skipping two to four stitches each time. If your chosen yarn is not particularly strong, repeat the weaving process a second time. Gently pull the yarn to cinch the beanie. Ensuring the top opening is fully closed, sew in the end securely on WS and fasten off. Sew in remaining yarn tail on WS.

Appendix A: Beanie Sizing Guide (as required)
The appropriate beanie size can be determined by using:
A) The Sizing Guide Table below, or
B) The Approximate Personalised Sizing Method.
A) Sizing Guide Table
The table below is based on The American Craft Yarn Council (ACYC) standard head circumference sizes and standard (fitted) beanie length.
To size the beanie circumference, first determine the number of relaxed FSC that equate to the table listed Beanie Circumference for the chosen Beanie Size, and then adjust the st count to the nearest multiple of two.
To size the beanie length, look up the table listed Beanie Length for the chosen Beanie Size. For a slouchy beanie, add at least an inch or 3-4cm to the table beanie length.
| Beanie Size | Beanie Circumference | Fitted Beanie Length (incl. brim) | ||
| Inches | Cm | Inches | Cm | |
| Child | 18 – 20 | 45.5 – 51.0 | 7.5 – 8.0 | 19.0 – 20.5 |
| Tween | 20 – 22 | 51.0 – 56.0 | 8.0 – 8.5 | 20.5 – 21.5 |
| Woman | 21 – 23 | 53.0 – 58.5 | 8.0 – 9.0 | 20.5 – 23.0 |
| Man | 22 – 24 | 56.0 – 61.0 | 8.5 – 9.5 | 21.5 – 24.0 |
B) Approximate Personalised Sizing Method
Circumference measure:
Determine the number of relaxed FSC that fit around the person’s head or ask the person to measure their head circumference using a tape measure and then determine the number of relaxed FSC for this circumference.
If needed, adjust the FSC count to the nearest multiple of two.
Length measure:
Use a tape measure, or ask the person to use a tape measure, to measure the length from just above the person’s brow to their crown. For a slouchy beanie add at least an inch or 3-4cm to the measured length.
