A quick to whip up cute, textured face scrubby mitt or washcloth that is perfect for use by the whole family.

Make your special people their own mitt or washcloth in their favourite colour or colours.

These mitts/cloths are ideal for charitable makes, fund-raising raffle items, gifting (with soap/ bath salts/ candle), and market stall stock. Make with organic cotton or recycled cotton for that extra appeal.

Pattern Details

  • Recommended Yarn: Cotton, bamboo, or cotton/bamboo blend of DK/8ply/Cat 3. Weight, OR Aran/Worsted/10ply/Cat. 4 Weight, OR thinner yarn with multiple strands worked together. Use a soft cotton or cotton blend for the face, and a rougher cotton for body (or cleaning use).
  • Hook Size: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Work a swatch to determine the optimal hook size for your tension.
  • Mitt Size: Size mitt to preference (and according to yarn ply/ weight) by adjusting the number of repeat rounds for the textured square. Refer also to Project Examples and Ravelry Projects.
  • Skill Level: Adventurous (!) Advanced Beginner to Intermediate.
  • Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions for stitches used in the pattern.
  • Gauge: No set gauge required. Refer to Project Examples for example measurements.
  • Pattern Synopsis: Mitt is constructed as two separate squares, and these are then stitched together. Washcloth is constructed as a single square. Each square is constructed from texture post stitches, in the round, using a two-round repeat (which can be constructed as many times as needed to achieve the required mitt size, for the chosen yarn/hook). There are two textured square options – one of these is available via the blog post and the other is available from Ravelry or Love Crafts. An optional hang loop can be added. Ravelry/ Love Crafts pdfs include bonus Soap Saver instructions.

Special Stitch Instructions

DC Standing Stitch (DCStndSt) – Stacked SC Method

Note: This stitch is used to create an invisible round joining seam, up the corner of the mitt or washcloth. If preferred, the pattern DCStndSt can be substituted with Ch 3, or with Ch 1 and SC plus Ch 2, or with your own version of a standing stitch.

Ch 1 and SC in first stitch from previous round. SC in FLO of SC that was just made.

Spn St

Please refer to The Crochet Fix YouTube video for visualisation. Crab Stitch, or SC can be substituted, if preferred.

Insert hook in stitch, yarn over hook and pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Yarn over hook and pull yarn through first loop on hook only (two loops on hook). While keeping both loops on hook, spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane. Yarn over hook and pull yarn through both loops on hook.

Tips

  • The pattern instructions have been written such that the Mitt/ Washcloth can be easily sized according to personal preference and to accommodate different types/weight of yarn.
  • Swatch with a couple of different hook sizes until satisfied with the density of the crochet Mitt fabric. If preferred, substitute pattern DCs/FpDCs with HDCs/FpHDCs instead. A Beg HDC can be worked as SC and Ch 1 (in place of Beg DCStndSt).
  • A water-proof button can be added to the hanging chain, or water-proof beads threaded onto the hanging chain (and then chain knotted beneath these to secure).
  • SC can be used (instead of Spn St, or Crab Stitch), to join the two squares. The squares can also be hand sewn together. If it is preferred that the stitch seam is not left exposed on the outside of the mitt, turn the mitt inside out, so that the stitch seam is on the inside.
  • Made larger (i.e., work as many Additional Repeats as required to achieve the required size) these make great body scrubbing mitts or oven mitts.
  • If Mitt squares or Washcloth square are not an even square shape, then this may be remedied by blocking, or modifying the square construction. Construction can be modified by one or more of the following methods:
    • Working the last two to three rounds of the square as single increase rounds, or
    • Working a Single/ Single/ Double corner increase three-round repeat, instead of pattern Single/ Double corner increase two-round repeat, and/or
    • Working corner HDCs instead of corner DCs.

Face Mitt Pattern Instructions

Construction is summarised as:

  • Make two Textured Squares, as per pattern instructions.
  • With right side of one square facing the wrong side of the other square, join the two squares together.
  • Optionally stitch a border along the circumference of the base/opening of the Mitt.
  • Optionally stitch a hang chain to the base of the Mitt.

Textured Square (make two)

Make two textured squares using either Option 1 or Option 2 instructions. Both are equally functional – there is only a slight aesthetic difference. Option 1 is available for free below and Option 2 is available via Ravelry/ Love Crafts PDFs.

Option 1 – Ch Sp Corners

Note:

  • The ‘seam’ of the square (for each round) is intentionally run up one corner, for a neater finish.
  • Beg DCStndSt counts as a DC for stitch count purposes.
  • Beg Sl St and Fin Sl St do not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes.
  • Finish after which ever round results in a square the size of personal preference. If using 10ply/Worsted/Cat. 4 weight yarn, the Mitt should be big enough after completing Round 4 or Round 5. if using 8ply/DK/Cat. 3 weight yarn, the Mitt should be big enough after completing Round 5 or 6.

Beg Circle

Make a circle, either using a magic circle, or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch to close circle.

Round 1

DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then 3 DC over beg circle. *Ch 1 and then 3 DC over beg circle.* Repeat Stitches between the * * once. Ch 1 and then 2 DC over beg circle. Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

(Stitch Count: Four Ch 1 Sp (corners) and four lots of 3 DC (sides))

Round 2 – double increase in corners

Sl St to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then 2 DC over first Ch 1 Sp. FpDC over each of the next three DCs. *Over next Ch 1 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC. FpDC over each of the next three DCs.* Repeat Stitches between the * * twice. DC over the first Ch 1 Sp (immediately clockwise to the DCStndSt that was previously constructed), and then Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

(Stitch Count: Four lots of  2 DC – Ch 1 – 2 DC corners, and four lots of 3 FpDC sides)

Round 3 – single increase in corners

Sl St to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then DC over first Ch 1 Sp. FpDC over each of the next: two DCs, three FpDCs, and two DCs. *Over next Ch 1 Sp: DC, Ch 1, DC. FpDC over each of the next:  two DCs, three FpDCs, and two DCs.* Repeat Stitches between the * * twice. Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

(Stitch Count: Four lots of  DC – Ch 1 – DC corners, and four lots of 7 FpDC sides)

Round 4 – double increase in corners

Sl St to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then 2 DC over first Ch 1 Sp. FpDC over each of the next: DC, seven FpDCs, and DC. *Over next Ch 1 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC. FpDC over each of the next: DC, seven FpDCs, and DC.* Repeat Stitches between the * * twice. DC over the first Ch 1 Sp (immediately clockwise to the DCStndSt that was previously constructed), and then Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

(Stitch Count: Four lots of  2 DC – Ch 1 – 2 DC corners, and four lots of 9 FpDC sides)

Round 5 – single increase in corners

Sl St to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then DC over first Ch 1 Sp. FpDC over each of the next: two DCs, nine FpDCs, and two DCs. *Over next Ch 1 Sp: DC, Ch 1, DC. FpDC over each of the next: two DCs, nine FpDCs, and two DCs.* Repeat Stitches between the * * twice. Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

(Stitch Count: four lots of  DC – Ch 1 – DC corners, and four lots of 13 FpDC sides)

Additional Rounds (as needed):

Keep repeating the following two rounds until the square is the desired size.

Repeat Round 1 – double increase in corners

Sl St to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then 2 DC over first Ch 1 Sp. FpDC over each stitch until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp. *Over next Ch 1 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC. FpDC over each stitch until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp.* Repeat Stitches between the * * twice. DC over the first Ch 1 Sp (immediately clockwise to the DCStndSt that was previously constructed), and then Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

Repeat Round 2 – single increase in corners

Sl St to first Ch 1 Sp. DCStndSt, Ch 1, and then DC over first Ch 1 Sp. FpDC over each stitch until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp. *Over next Ch 1 Sp: DC, Ch 1, DC. FpDC over each stitch until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp.* Repeat Stitches between the * * twice. Sl St into DCStndSt to complete the round.

Join Squares

With right side of one square facing the wrong side of the other square, join the two squares together. (The Mitt should have a different texture on each external side, one side being smoother and the other side being rougher).

Three sides should be joined and one side left open (for use as a Mitt).

The sides can be joined by any of the following methods:

  • Crochet (Spn St, Crab Stitch, or SC) around the sides in the BLO of equivalent stitch in both squares.
  • Crochet (Spn St, Crab Stitch, or SC) around the sides in the FLO of equivalent stitch in both squares.
  • Crochet (Spn St, Crab Stitch, or SC) around the sides in both loops of equivalent stitch in both squares.
  • Sew the squares together using a darning needle and yarn, and your preferred stitch method.

Optional Bottom Opening Border

If you are intending to leave the squares join seam exposed (Spn St or Crab stitch join lends itself to this), then I recommend working a border around the entire bottom opening of the mitt in the same stitch as the mitt squares were joined. If you are intending to hide the seam by turning the mitt inside out, then you may prefer to omit this step.

Crochet (Spn St, Crab Stitch, or SC (in the same stitch used to join the squares)) the circumference of entire Mitt opening. Note: You may find the finish is neater if an additional stitch is worked in the two stitches that commenced and finished the joining of the three sides of the squares.

Optional Hang Chain

Make a Ch of length of your preference and then Sl St back into the same stitch that the Ch originated from.

Optionally sew a cute button over the base of the hang chain, or thread water-proof beads over the chain, and then knot the hang chain beneath these to secure the beads.

Note: If a chunkier chain is preferred, try stacking SCs one on top of another to construct the chain, or try working a Crab Stitch or Spn St in every Ch (after the Ch loop has first been constructed).

Washcloth Pattern Instructions

Construction is summarised as:

  • Make a single Textured Square, as per Face Mitt textured square pattern instructions (Option 1 (as documented on this Blog) or Option 2 (as per patter PDF available form Ravelry or Love Crafts)), making as many repeat rounds as required to achieve the preferred washcloth or dish cloth size. Please note that the two example wash cloths use Option 2 for construction.
  • Optionally stitch a border of your choice around all four edges of washcloth. Example project border instructions are provided in the paid PDF.
  • Optionally add a hang chain (as per Mitt hang chain instructions).

Note:

  • Refer to Tips section for suggestions to remedy a misshapen square (should this occur).
