Gratitude Shawl

A pretty and feminine filet triangular crochet shawl that works up quickly, using beginner stitches (Ch, HDC, DC, SC, Sl St), to construct the delicate triangle lace motif and solid repeats. Finish with one of the border options, or with a yarn fringe.

Pattern Details

  • Recommended Yarn: Yarn of any brand, fibre and weight can be used. Use a single yarn colour, multiple yarn colours or a gradient yarn.
  • Hook: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Select the hook that achieves the preferred drape.
  • Size: ~214cm/84” wide by ~97cm/38” long if using  an entire 1000m/1093y 3-4ply/Fingering weight/Cat 2. yarn cake.
Alternatively, size to preference by adjusting the total number of rows.
  • Skill Level: Advanced beginner to Intermediate.
  • Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions for stitches used in the pattern.
  • Gauge: According to personal preference and to result in a lacey drape. Example project gauge: First three rows triangle is ~10.5 cm/ ~1.8” wide (at triangle base) by ~4.5 cm/ long (base to tip).
  • Pattern Synopsis: Triangular shawl that is constructed top down, in rows, working back and forth, with increases constructed in each of the three triangle points, throughout. The pattern consists of filet repeats alternated with solid repeats. The filet repeat consists of solid inverted triangles separated by lace triangles.

Project Examples

Below are the details of the yarn used for the shawls pictured within this pattern document. For additional project ideas and inspiration, please visit the Ravelry listing for this pattern.

Example 1 (grey pastel): Hobbii Twirls Deluxe (Millennium Star – 26) using almost the entire cake and worked with a 3.25mm hook. 63 pattern rows and 2 border rows as per pattern example border (with Row 2 Option 1). Enough yarn remained to make a simple tie.

Example 2 (pink pastel): Hobbii Twirls Deluxe (Regent Rose) with details as above, except Option 3 followed instead for example border.

Abbreviations

  • Beg = Beginning
  • Ch = Chain
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • DC2TogCl = two DCs stitches worked together in a single stitch from the previous row (thus maintaining the stitch count)
  • Fin = Finishing
  • HDC = Half Double Crochet
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • Sk = Skip
  • Sl St = Slip Stitch
  • Sp = Space

Special Stitch Instructions

DC2TogCl, Shell, Cluster Shell and Picot Shell Special Stitch instructions apply to the example shawl border option only and are detailed in the Finishing section of the pattern. Please ignore these instructions if you prefer to work your own border design.

Tips

  • For best results, use a yarn that is composed of a fibre that yields good stitch definition (avoid extremely soft/ unstructured yarns and fluffy yarns).
  • Single colour or a very gradual ombre gradient yarn is recommended. Another option is to complete all solid repeats in one colour and all filet blocks in another.
  • The previous row stitch immediately following the triangle centre tip Ch 2 Sp can become hidden after constructing the tip for the current row. Expose the stitch (if needed) by gently pulling the corner stitches away from this stitch.
  • Ensure the chains in the lace triangle motifs are not overly tight. If you prefer to work quite tight chains, then additional chain(s) may need to be worked to ensure the shawl rows lie flat.
  • Post stitches (alternating front post and back post rows) can be substituted for DC stitches in the solid DC repeats of the pattern, if preferred. This will add texture to the shawl.

Pattern Instructions

Construction is summarised as:

  • Solid repeat x 1
  • Filet repeat x 1 (single filet repeat block)
  • Solid repeat x 1
  • Filet repeat x 2 (double filet repeat block)
  • Solid repeat x 1
  • Filet repeat x 3 (triple filet repeat block)
  • Solid repeat x 1
  • Filet repeat x 4 (quadruple filet repeat block)
  • Solid repeat x 1
  • Filet repeat x 5 (quintuple filet repeat block)
  • Etc., until shawl is size of preference (and either finishing with a solid repeat or the final filet repeat of a filet block)

Note:

  • The stitch counts have been written in a format that is intended to simplify the triangle motif counts. The stitch count ‘standard stitches’ are as follows, throughout: one beg Ch 5 (beg corner), one centre Ch 2 Sp (middle corner), and, one fin Ch 2 – DC sequence (fin corner)).
  • Each row always begins and ends at a Ch 2 Sp triangle tip. Each subsequent row will commence in the same tip that the previous row was completed in, which is opposite to the tip that the previous row was commenced in.

First Solid Repeat – Rows 1 to 3

These rows construct one inverted solid triangle per side (or two in total).

Row 1

Make a circle, either by Ch 4 and then Sl St into fourth Ch from hook, or magic circle. Ch 5, then 3 DC over circle. Ch 2 and then 3 DC over circle. Ch 2 and then DC over circle. Sew in beg yarn end securely.

(Stitch Count: Two lots of 3 DC (solid triangle tip) plus standard stitches (beg Ch 5, centre Ch 2 Sp, and fin Ch 2 and DC stitches)

Row 2

Turn. Ch 5, then 2 DC over first Ch 2 Sp. DC in each of the next three DCs. Over the centre Ch 2 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC. DC in each of the next three DCs. Over the last Ch 2 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 2, DC.

Row 5

Note: When the DC stitches are constructed over the Ch 3, these should be made as close to the preceding and proceeding DC stitches as possible (as per red coloured stitches in image). The DC stitches can be gently repositioned if required. This note also applies to all subsequent rows where multiple Ch stitches are worked over.

Turn. Ch 5, then 2 DC over first Ch 2 Sp. +DC in each of the next three DCs. 2 DC over the next Ch 3 Sp. Ch 2, Sk next SC and then DC in next Ch 2 Sp (that is in between the two SCs). Note:

  • With each subsequent filet three-row repeat the inverted solid triangle motif count and the lace triangle motif count will both increase by two, in total. There will always be two more solid motifs than lace motifs constructed in any three-row repeat.
  • The shawl can be finished after any Filet block (eg row 42, or row 60, etc.), OR after any Solid repeat (eg row 45, or row 63, etc.).
  • I recommend finishing at row 60, or row 63, for a standard sized triangle shawl, as constructed with a fingering weight yarn.
  • For a smaller triangle scarf, finish at Row 42 or Row 45.

Finishing/Border

Finish the shawl with a border of your preference, or alternatively, add a pretty fringe along the two short edges of the triangle.

Instructions for the example shawl border are provided below. This border can be worked after any Solid repeat (e.g. rows 30, 45, or 63), however the example shawl border has been worked after row 63 . A stitch count has not been provided for the border rows, as the instructions are intended to be generic for finishing the shawl after any solid repeat.

Border Row 1

Special Stitch Instructions for this row:

  • Beg Shell: Ch 4, DC, Ch 1, DC in the same Ch 2 Sp.
  • Shell: DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1 , DC.
  • Fin Shell: DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC in the same Ch 2 Sp.

Turn. Beg Shell over first Ch 2 Sp. +Ch 3, sk next four stitches, and then SC in the next stitch. Ch 1, sk next stitch, and then SC in next stitch. Ch 2, sk next DC, and then HDC over next Ch 3 Sp. Ch 2, sk next SC, and then SC over next Ch 1 Sp (between the two SCs).

Turn. Ch 7 and then Sl St into 4th chain from hook (Picot constructed). Ch 1 and then DC over first Ch 1 Sp. Ch 2, sk next DC, and then DC over next Ch 1 Sp. Ch 2, sk next DC, and then HDC over next Ch 3 Sp. Ch 2, sk next SC, and then SC over next Ch 1 Sp (in between the two SCs). Construct Picot Shells (as per above instructions) over subsequent stitches (first side, centre, and second side) until reaching the last SC in the current row.
