Sunday Strolls Shawl

A pretty and feminine filet triangular crochet shawl that works up quickly, using advanced beginner stitches: SC, DC, SlSt, Ch, FpDC and BpDC.

The pattern instructions provide two options for construction: a single motif transition, or a double motif transition.

The single motif transition pattern is available for free on my blog and the double motif transition pattern is available as paid pdf download from Ravelry.

This is an original pattern by Farrah Jane Tate. You are welcome to sell products you’ve made using my patterns; however, I ask that you refer to the exact name of my pattern somewhere in the text of your listing. You may not copy, re-publish, sell, distribute, translate without permission, or claim my photos or patterns as your own in any way.

Please note: If you have downloaded this pattern from a site other than Ravelry, Love Crochet, or my personal blog, you may not have the most current version. Please visit one of the aforementioned sites to download an official, version-controlled copy.

Pattern Details

  • Recommended Yarn: Yarn of any brand, fibre and weight can be used. Use a single yarn colour, multiple yarn colours or a gradient yarn.
  • Hook: Use yarn label instructions as a guide for selecting hook size. Select the hook that achieves the preferred drape.
  • Size: ~200cm/78.7” wide by ~85cm/33.5” long if using  an entire 1000m/1093y 3-4ply/Fingering weight/Cat 2. yarn cake. Alternatively, size to preference by adjusting the number of rows for each section of the shawl.
  • Skill Level: Advanced beginner to Intermediate.
  • Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations and Special Stitch Instructions for stitches used in the pattern.
  • Gauge: According to personal preference and to result in a lacey drape. Example project gauge: First row ~7cm/2.8” width at base by ~3cm/1.2” length (base to tip).
  • Pattern Synopsis: Triangular shawl that is constructed top down, in rows, working back and forth, with increases constructed in each of the three triangle points, throughout. The pattern consists of solid inverted triangles separated by lace triangles. Options include single motif design transition (available for free via this blog) or double motif design transition (available via Ravelry paid pdf).

Project Examples

Below are the details of the yarn used for the shawls pictured within this pattern document. For additional project ideas and inspiration, please visit the Ravelry listing for this pattern.

Example 1: Hobbii Twister (Honey Bee) using almost the entire cake and worked with a 3.25mm hook and following the Single Transition instructions. 57 pattern rows (11 repeats of two-row triangles, 2 rows of post stitches, and then 11 repeats of three-row triangles).  3 border rows as per pattern example border. Note: first row of transition worked as post stitches.

Example 2: Hobbii Twirls Deluxe (Edcora Red) using almost the entire cake and worked with a 3.25mm hook and following the Double Transition instructions (refer to Ravelry pdf). 58 pattern rows (9 repeats of two-row triangles, 2 rows of post stitches, 5 repeats of three-row triangles, 3 rows of post stitches, and then 5 repeats four-row triangles).  1 border rows as per pattern example border. Note: first row of transition worked as post stitches.

Example 3: Hobbii Twirls Deluxe (Regent Rose)  using almost the entire cake and worked with a 3.25mm hook and following the Double Transition instructions (refer to Ravelry pdf). 59 pattern rows (6 repeats of two-row triangles, 2 rows of post stitches, 6 repeats of three-row triangles, 3 rows of post stitches, and then 6 repeats four-row triangles).  1 border rows as per pattern example border. Note: first row of transition worked as post stitches.

Tips

  • For best results, use a yarn that is composed of a fibre that yields good stitch definition (avoid extremely soft/ unstructured yarns and fluffy yarns).
  • The previous row stitch immediately following a triangle tip Ch 2 Sp can become hidden after constructing the tip for the current row. Expose the stitch (if needed) by gently pulling the corner stitches away from this stitch.
  • Ensure the chains in the lace triangle motifs are not overly tight. If you prefer tight chains, then additional chain(s) may need to be worked to ensure the shawl rows lie flat.
  • I prefer the look of the shawl on the reverse side (i.e. the first row sitting at back/ against body), and thus I designed the post stitches to form a ridge on the reverse side. If you prefer the look of the right side of the shawl then simply swap Fp pattern stitches for Bp, and Bp pattern stitches for Fp.
  • As the triangle repeats are written in generic form, the number of repeats can be varied from the pattern instructions, as desired. For example, refer to Change It Up section for the construction sequence for Double Transition Example 3 Shawl. You may prefer to transition according to where the colour changes occur in your chosen gradient.

Abbreviations

  • Beg = Beginning
  • BpDC = Back Post Double Crochet (stitch worked around the post, with hook inserted from back/ reverse side of work and then around the post)
  • Ch = Chain
  • DC = Double Crochet
  • Fin = Finishing
  • FpDC = Front Post Double Crochet (stitch worked around the post, with hook inserted from front side of work across the post)
  • FLO = Front Loop Only
  • SC = Single Crochet
  • Sk = Skip
  • Sl St = Slip Stitch
  • Sp = Space

Special Stitch Instructions

Picot Shell (used for border option only)

Ch 3 picot (used in the Picot Shell instructions below):

Ch 3, and then Sl St into the FLO of the DC that the Ch 3 originates from (such that a small Ch loop is constructed).

Picot Shell instruction :

In the same stitch, work all the following stitches: 2 DC, Ch 3 picot, 2 DC.

Pattern Instructions

The construction sequence is: 2-Row Triangles (22 rows (11 lots of 2-Row repeats)), then Post Stitches (2 rows), and then 3-Row Triangles (33 rows (11 lots of 2-Row repeats), or as many as required to meet the desired length).

Please Note:

  • As the repeats are written in a generic format, the number of repeats can be varied from the pattern instructions, as desired – this may be required if a smaller or larger shawl is preferred, or to work the transition in line with where a key colour change falls in a gradient cake.
  • Each row always begins and ends in a Ch 2 Sp triangle tip. Each subsequent row will commence in the same tip that the previous row was completed in, which is opposite to the tip that the previous row was commenced in.
  • The pdf available from Ravelry contains a Stitch Count explanation (Appendix 1), a *Stitch*/+Stitch+ Repeat explanation (Appendix 2), and diagrams for motif construction (Appendix 3)

Keep repeating Rows 28 to 30, to construct each subsequent three-row repeat. The following table provides the number of solid triangles and lace triangles that will be constructed for each subsequent repeat. When the shawl is the desired length add a border of your choice. If using a ~1000m 3-4ply gradient yarn cake, and a multiple row border is to be made, then finish after row 57 (with 46 solid triangles per row).
