Pattern Details
Recommended Yarn:
Lionbrand Heartland 10 ply/ Cat. 4/ Worsted weight yarn, ~120-130 grams/ ~4.2-4.6 ounces (depending on brim option). Note: Yarns of other brand and/or weight can be used with minor pattern adjustments. Refer to Basic Resizing Tips, and to Ravelry projects.
Hook: 5.5-6 mm/ size I – J (depending on individual tension, and as to meet gauge).
Size: OSFM medium adult beanie. Measurements (for the standard pattern of 60 chains circumference, made in the recommended yarn, and with the gauge below): ~52 cm/ ~20.5” relaxed circumference at brim, and ~24cm/ ~9.4” length from brim to peak. Note: The stitches used for this beanie give 1-2 cm of stretch, when worn. Refer also to Basic Resizing Tips if size adjustment is required.
Skill Level: Intermediate.
Stitch Terminology: US – refer to Abbreviations for stitches used.
Gauge: Four SC foundation stitches: ~3.5cm/ ~1.4” wide. Rounds 1 to 4 (excluding foundation): ~4.5cm/~1.8” tall. Also refer to Tips.
Pattern Synopsis: Constructed in two steps: make beanie first, and then, add brim next. Worked right side always and bottom up (to peak). Cable/ bobble fabric is constructed using both Front Post (Fp) and Puff stitches. The brim options are Ribbed Brim, Star Stitch Brim or Simple Brim.
Tips
- For best results, use a yarn that is composed of a fibre that yields good stitch definition (avoid extremely soft/ unstructured yarns and fluffy yarns).
- Use the recommended hook size as a guide only. As my tension is reasonably loose, if you crochet tightly, you may need to go up one to two hook sizes from the size that I have used. For an average sized adult beanie, check that your gauge is close to the gauge mentioned in the Pattern Details. If not, adjust tension and/or hook size and/or Golden Loop style to approximately meet the gauge.
- If preferred, the SC stitches can be substituted with Puff stitches, in all rounds through to Round 21. This option is a little more yarn hungry, however.

Special Stitch Instructions
Standing Stitch (StndSt)
A Standing Stitch is worked at the start of a new round so that the seam is less obvious. The method described below is the simple stacked SC method. If you already have a preferred method, then please substitute your preferred method wherever this stitch is referenced in the pattern instructions.
If you prefer to commence rounds with chains, then substitute ‘Ch 3’ for DCStndSt and substitute ‘Ch 1 and SC around stitch post, and then Ch 2’ for FpDCStndSt.
DCStndSt:
- (Without first Ch 1) SC in the first stitch from the previous round.
- Ch 1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.
FpDCStndSt:
- Ch 1 and then SC around the front post of the first stitch from the previous round.
- Ch 1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.
Puff Stitch (Puff)
The instructions below provide details for a SC approximate height Puff Stitch.
There are three options: Puff 3, Puff 4, and Puff 5.
If using pattern recommended 10ply/Worsted/Aran/Cat. 4 yarn, then Puff 4.
If using a thicker yarn, then Puff 3. If using a thinner yarn, then Puff 4 or Puff 5.
Puff 3
- Insert hook through St, yarn over hook and pull through loop (two loops on hook).
- Yarn over hook, insert hook back through same St as in Step 1., and pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook).
- Repeat Step 2. once (six loops on hook).
- Yarn over hook and (without inserting hook into St) pull yarn directly through five loops (two loops on hook).
- Yarn over and (without inserting hook into St) pull yarn directly through remaining two loops on hook.
Puff 4
- Insert hook through St, yarn over hook and pull through loop (two loops on hook).
- Yarn over hook, insert hook back through same St as in Step 1., and pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook).
- Repeat Step 2. twice (eight loops on hook).
- Yarn over hook and (without inserting hook into St) pull yarn directly through seven loops (two loops on hook).
- Yarn over and (without inserting hook into St) pull yarn directly through remaining two loops on hook.
Puff 5
- Yarn over hook, insert hook through St, yarn over and pull through loop (three loops on hook).
- Yarn over hook, insert hook back through same St as in Step 1., and pull through loop (an additional two loops on hook).
- Repeat Step 2. three times (ten loops on hook).
- Yarn over hook and (without inserting hook into St) pull yarn directly through nine loops (two loops on hook).
- Yarn over and (without inserting hook into St) pull yarn directly through remaining two loops on hook.
Star Stitch – Optional (used for one single brim option only)
To make the star stitch requires two rounds of construction. The first round makes the base (lower half) and the ‘eye’ (middle) of each star. The second round makes the top (upper half) of each star.
ROUND 1- STAR BASE AND EYE
1. Ch 3, then insert hook in second Ch from hook. Yarn over hook and draw a loop of yarn through stitch.
2. Insert hook in the third Ch from hook, yarn over hook and draw loop of yarn through stitch.
3. As per Step 2, draw a loop of yarn through each of the following three stitches: BLO of the stitch the Ch 3 originated from, and BLO of each of the next two stitches counter-clockwise. Pull upwards on the last loop made to make it a little larger than the previous loops. There should now be six loops on hook in total.
4. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through all six loops on hook (one loop remaining on hook). The first star ‘base’ has now been made.
5. Yarn over hook and draw yarn loop through loop on hook. The first star ‘eye’ has now been made.
6. Using technique as previously used for the first star base/eye, draw a loop through each of the following five stitches: star eye, BLO of the last loop of the previous star, BLO of the stitch that the last loop of the previous star originates from, and BLO of each of the next two stitches counter clockwise. Pull upwards on the last loop made to make it a little larger than the previous loops. There should be six loops on hook in total.
7. Yarn over hook and draw yarn through all six loops on hook. The second star ‘base’ has now been made.
8. Yarn over hook and draw yarn loop through loop on hook. The second star ‘eye’ has now been made.
9. Make each subsequent star stitch in the round as per Steps 6 to 8. Once the last star base and eye is made, Sl St loosely into the 3rd Ch of the beg Ch 3 (from Step 1.).
ROUND 2- STAR TOP
1. Sl St across to first star eye. Ch 2, and then HDC in the first star eye. The first star ‘top’ has now been made.
2. 2 HDC in the eye of each star around, so that star tops are made for each star eye in the round. Then Sl St into second Ch of beg Ch 2.
Spin Stitch – optional (used for one single brim option only)
Please refer to The Crochet Fix YouTube video for visualisation.
Crab Stitch can be substituted, if preferred.
1. Ch 1, then insert hook in first stitch. Yarn over hook and pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Yarn over and pull a loop through the last loop made (two loops on hook). While keeping both loops on hook, spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane. Yarn over hook and pull a loop through both loops on hook. (First Spin Stitch made.)
2. Insert hook in next stitch, then yarn over hook and pull through a loop (two loops on hook). Yarn over and pull a loop through the last loop made (two loops on hook). While keeping both loops on hook, spin hook 360O clockwise (a full rotation) on the horizontal plane. Yarn over hook and pull a loop through both loops on hook. (Next Spin Stitch made.)
3. Repeat Step 2. until end of round, and then Sl St into first Spin Stitch to complete round.

BEANIE FOUNDATION ROUND
Chainless Foundation
Make a chainless foundation round of 60 SCs total. (Note: for the last chainless SC you will need to join this stitch at the base to the first chainless SC, so that the first round is properly joined.)
Sl St into the top of the first chainless SC to complete the round.
Note: If you prefer not to use a chainless foundation, work 60 chains and then Sl St into first Ch to form a circle. Work the 60 SCs around, and then Sl St to complete the foundation SC round.

Basic Resizing Tips
Resizing Options
There are three resizing options:
- Adjust tension and/ or hook size and/ or Golden Loop style using Worsted yarn and retain the stitch count and total number of rounds as per pattern instructions. This can be used to achieve a small variation to the size of the standard beanie.
- Adjust the category or thickness of yarn used and retain the stitch count and total number of rounds per above pattern. This will achieve a larger variation to the size of the standard beanie. For example, 8ply/DK/Cat. 3 yarn will make a smaller and lighter weight beanie that will fit a child. A thicker 10ply/Chunky/Cat. 4 yarn (than Heartland – such as Spotlight Spot Saver and Chunky Monkey) will make a larger and bulkier beanie that will fit a larger sized man.
- Adjust the total stitch count by a factor of four using Worsted yarn (refer to Worsted Approximate Personalised Fit Method instructions).
Note: The beanie will require a depth adjustment if the foundation stitch count deviates significantly from the standard 60 Ch. If a significant adjustment is required, this can be achieved either by omitting or adding one or more standard repeats (Rounds 5-8). If a smaller adjustment is required, this can be achieved by increasing or decreasing the length of the brim (for example, by modifying the beg Ch number for the ribbed brim option).
Worsted Approximate Personalised Fit Method
- Determine the person’s head circumference chain number (HCCN). Either:
- Determine the relaxed number of chains that fit around the person’s head, or
- Ask the person to measure their head circumference using a tape measure. Then determine the relaxed number of chains that are equivalent to this tape measure circumference.
- Get the adjusted foundation chain number (AFCN) by determining the factor of four that is the closest to the HCCN. For most adults this will be as per the standard pattern count of 60 stitches. Younger children will mostly be adjusted to 52 to 56 stitches, and babies mostly to 48 stitches (or 44 for NB).
Table 1 provides the approximate relaxed circumference measure for Lionbrand Heartland 10 Ply/Worsted/ Cat. 4 yarn, according to foundation round stitch count.
Table 1: Approximate Circumference per Foundation Stitch Count |
|
Beanie Circumference |
Foundation Stitch Count |
~38cm/ ~15” |

~55.5cm/ ~21.8” |
64 |
~59cm/ ~23.2” |

~62.4cm/ ~24.5” |
72 |
Please note:
- The circumference per foundation stitch count may vary for your tension and/or chosen yarn.
- If working with 8ply/DK/Cat. 3 yarn, for an adult sized beanie work a foundation round of either 72 stitches (small adult), 76 stitches (medium adult) or 80 stitches (large adult), depending on the thickness of the yarn for the chosen brand. Also increase the depth of the beanie as per Resizing Options depth adjustment note.
Change It Up
If you have enjoyed making this beanie, then try making another with SC stitches substituted for Puff stitches in all rounds through to Round 21.
