Easy Peasy Posy Shawl

Such a satisfying project… the Easy Peasy Posy Shawl is a pretty and feminine triangular crochet shawl featuring on-trend 70’s flower motifs and lace lattice work.

The design works up surprisingly quickly, using simple stitches over a 10-row repeat.

The shawl looks lovely worn teamed with a pretty, feminine dress, or worn over a plain jumper with jeans or long skirt.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

  • An explanation of + + repeat (repeat of an entire side of shawl) and * * repeat (of stitches within a side of the shawl) is provided in Appendix B in pattern pdf. Where # is included for a * * repeat, this indicates that the last repeat should finish at this symbol.
  • Images of shawl construction are provided in Appendix C in pattern pdf.
  • Shawl diagrams are provided in Appendix D in pattern pdf.
  • Work all DCStndSt straight into Ch 2 Sp (without first Sl St).
  • Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt. When commencing with Ch 3, work this and the additional Ch 2 (Ch 5 in total) directly from the last stitch of the previous row, and then work the remainder of the stitches into the first Ch 2 Sp.
  • DCStndSt (or Ch 3 substitute) is included in the DC stitch count.
  • Stitches within ( ) are to be made in the same stitch from the previous round, or for a sk st instruction all the stitches within ( ) are to be skipped.
  • St Count follows each round in ( ).
  • If preferred Ch 2 can be substituted for Ch 1 in Flower Motif Row 4. This will make the flower look fuller. A 2DCCl can also optionally be made in subsequent round Ch 2 Sp instead of a DC.
  • When constructing the Flower Motif Rows 2 and 4, it is recommended that individual Ch stitches are worked into (as per pattern instructions) as this results in better motif definition. However, if preferred, the stitches can all be made in the same Ch Sp.
  • Although this design was originally made for gradient yarn cakes with no colour changes, colour changes can be made throughout construction. Refer to Appendix E in pattern pdf for colour/row sequence inspiration. If changing colours on a Row 1 repeat, one of the following alternative construction options may be preferred:
    • Working two DC stitches together (reduction stitch) over the two stitches that form the tip of each lattice triangle.
    • Working two FpDC stitches together (reduction stitch) over the posts of the two stitches that form the tip of each lattice triangle.

Beg Circle

Leaving sufficient length of yarn tail to later sew in securely, make a circle, either using MC, or Ch 3-4 and Sl St into first Ch to close circle.

Repeat Row 7 – Solid: Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 2, 2 DC) in first Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the side (including each Ch 1 Sp) (first side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the second side (including each Ch 1 Sp) (second side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, DC) in last Ch 2 Sp.

Repeat Row 8 – Solid: Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 2, 2 DC) in first Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the side (first side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the second side (second side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, DC) in last Ch 2 Sp.

Repeat Row 10 – Lattice Row 2: Note: Row commences in a DC. All increases are worked in a DC instead of a Ch 2 Sp. Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC) in first st, +*sk next Ch 3 Sp, DC in next st, Ch 3, DC in next st*, rep st btwn * * along the side finishing in the last st in the side immediately before the last Ch 3 Sp, sk next Ch 3 Sp+ (first side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC) in next st, rep st btwn + + once more (second side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC) in last st.

Optional Simple Border

Two simple border options are provided below.

A) Option 1 – Solid and Lattice

Make two or more repeats of the following five rows.

Border Repeat Row 1 – Solid: Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 2, DC) in first st, +3 DC in next Ch 3 Sp, *DC in btwn st post of next two st (as prev), 3 DC in next Ch 3 Sp*, rep st btwn * * along the side+ (first side made), (DC, Ch 2, DC) in centre DC (at shawl tip), rep st btwn + + once more until reaching last DC in the second side (second side made), (DC, Ch 2, DC) in last st.

Border Repeat Row 2 – Solid: Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 2, 2 DC) in first Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the first side (first side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC) in next Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the second side (second side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, DC) in last Ch 2 Sp.

Border Repeat Row 3 – Solid: Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 2, 2 DC) in first Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the first side (first side made), (DC, Ch 2, DC) in next Ch 2 Sp, DC in each st along the second side (second side made), (2 DC, Ch 2, DC) in last Ch 2 Sp.

Border Repeat Row 4 – Lattice Row 1: Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC) in first Ch 2 Sp, +*sk three st, (DC, Ch 3, DC) in next st*, rep st btwn * * until reaching the last three DC in the side, sk the last three st+ (first side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC) in next Ch 2 Sp, rep st btwn + + once more (second side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC) in last Ch 2 Sp.

Repeat Row 10 – Lattice Row 2: Note: Row commences in a DC. All increases are worked in a DC instead of a Ch 2 Sp. The (DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC) st sequence will be worked in the centre DC (i.e. the DC that is at the shawl triangle tip, between the two short sides of the triangle). Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC) in first st, +*sk next Ch 3 Sp, DC in next st, Ch 3, DC in next st*, rep st btwn * * until reaching the last Ch 3 Sp in the side, sk last Ch 3 Sp+ (first side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC) in next st, rep st btwn + + once more (second side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC) in last st.

B) Option 2 – Lattice Only

Extend the lattice from Row 10, by repeating the following row as many times as desired.

Border Repeat Row 1 – Lattice Row 2: Note: Row commences in a DC. All increases are worked in a DC instead of a Ch 2 Sp. The (DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC) st sequence will be worked in the centre DC (i.e. the DC that is at the shawl triangle tip, between the two short sides of the triangle). Turn, (DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC) in first st, +*sk next Ch 3 Sp, DC in next st, Ch 3, DC in next st*, rep st btwn * * until reaching the last Ch 3 Sp in the side, sk the last Ch 3 Sp+ (first side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC) in next st, rep st btwn + + once more (second side made), (DC, Ch 3, DC) in last st.
