Pattern Synopsis
- Shawl with filet work including flower motifs and lattice work.
- Worked in rows, from top to bottom, to form a triangular shawl.
- Stitches are beginner worthy SC, HDC, DC, Ch and SlSt.
- Increases occur at the beginning and end of each row, as well as in the middle corner (between the two short sides of the triangular shawl).
Tips
- For best effect, use a yarn that holds a good stitch definition and is not overly fluffy or textured. A 3-4 ply cotton or cotton blend will produce a light weight and airy shawl, suitable for layering in Spring, Summer and Autumn.
- First work a swatch to determine suitable hook size for your chosen yarn.
- When constructing stitches in the second/middle Ch 2 Sp (that is between the two short sides of the triangle), after making the last corner DC always ensure the next previous round DC stitch is exposed. This can be achieved by gently pulling the corner stitches sideways to the right, away from this stitch. Stitching in this next DC stitch is critical to maintain the correct stitch count for subsequent rows.
- When constructing the Flower Rows 2, 3 and 4, it is recommended that the motif stitches are worked into the previous row stitches (rather than over the stitches). This results in better motif definition.
- If preferred, Ch 1 can be substituted for Ch 2, for each of the three Ch 2 Sp in Rows 1 to 8.
- Row 1, from Repeat 2 onwards, can be constructed differently to pattern written instructions, according to personal preference. An alternate construction may be preferable if changing colour at this row, such as:
- Working two DC stitches together (a 2DCTog reduction stitch) over the two stitches that form the tip of each lattice triangle (rather one stitch through the triangle space).
- Working one front post stitch over the posts of the two stitches that form the tip of each lattice triangle (a FP2DCTog reduction stitch).
- To size to individual preference:
- Work rows 1-10.
- Measure (L)ength from the start of Row 1 to the end of Row 10.
- Measure (W)idth from the start of Row 1 to end of Row 10.
- To determine the number of 10 row repeats required for a shawl of a Preferred Finished Length (PFL), use the following calculation (with the same units for numerator and denominator): PFL/L. Round up or down (to a whole number). Note: this excludes any border you may wish to add.
- To for determine the number of 10 row repeats required a shawl of a Preferred Finished Width (PFW), use the following calculation (with the same units for numerator and denominator): PFW/W. Round up or down (to a whole number). Note: this excludes any border you may wish to add.
Abbreviations
beg = beginning
Ch = Chain
Cnr = Corner
Sp = Space
SlSt = Slip Stitch
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
DCStndSt = DC Standing Stitch (refer to Special Stitch Instructions). This is the default alternative to beg Ch 3. (Either commencement method can be used however.)
Special Stitch Instructions
DCStndSt1:
- Ch 1 and SC over the magic circle or first Ch 2 Sp (whichever is applicable).
- Ch 1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.
1The Standing Stitch is worked at the start of a new row. This is the beginner worthy ‘Stacked SC’ method. As there are a number of ways to work a standing stitch, if you already have a method that works for you, please substitute your preferred method where this stitch is referenced in the pattern instructions. Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt. Use the same method throughout construction.
Pattern Instructions
Note:
- The beginning DCStndSt/Ch 3 are always included in the ‘DC’ stitch count.
- Lattice Row 1 and Solid Row 1 (from repeat two) are commenced in a DC stitch rather than in a Ch 2 Sp (applicable to all other rows).
- When your shawl is the preferred size, optionally add a border of your choice.
First 10 Row Repeat
In this first repeat one motif per side will be constructed (i.e. two in total).
ROW 1 – SOLID
Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then SlSt into first Ch. DCStndSt over circle, then Ch 2. +DC three times over circle and then Ch 2.+ Repeat +Stitches+ once, then DC. If using a magic circle, now pull taut.
(Stitch Count: eight DC and three Ch 2 Sp.)
ROW 2 –SOLID
Turn work. Over first Ch 2 Sp: DCStndSt2, Ch 2, 2 DC. +DC in each of the next 3 DCs.+ Over second Ch 2 Sp (Cnr, between the two short sides of the triangle): 2 DC, Ch 2, 2 DC. Repeat +Stitches+ once, to construct the second side. Over last Ch 2 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 2, DC.
(Stitch Count: 16 DC and three Ch 2 Sp)
2If working a DCStndSt then work this straight over Ch 2 Sp (without first SlSt). If instead using Ch 3 to commence, then work this and the additional Ch 2 (Ch 5 in total) directly from the last stitch of the previous row, and then work the remainder of the corner stitches over the first Ch 2 Sp. The same principle is applicable for all subsequent rows, where the row commences from a Ch 2 Sp.
ROW 3 –FLOWER MOTIF ROW 1

Turn work. In first DC: DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC. +*Skip Ch 3 and then DC in next DC. Ch 3 and DC in next DC (such that a V with Ch 3 has been made).* Repeat *Stitches* n times. Skip Ch 3.+ In Cnr DC: DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC. Repeat +Stitches+ once, to construct the second side. In last DC: DC, Ch 3, DC.
Simple Border Instructions
Instead of finishing with a full 10 row repeat of the pattern, another option is to add a border. Several options are provided below. Otherwise, work a border of your choice.
Option 1
Make two or more repeats of the following five rows.
BORDER REPEAT 1 – SOLID
Turn work. In first DC: DCStndSt, Ch 2, DC. +3 DC over the next Ch 3 Sp. *DC over the next 2 DCs (reduction stitch over the triangle tip, as previous), then 3 DC over the next Ch 3 Sp.* Repeat *Stitches* until reaching next Corner DC.+ In Cnr DC: DC, Ch 2, DC. Repeat +Stitches+ once, to construct the second side. In last DC: DC, Ch 2, DC.
BORDER REPEAT 2 – SOLID
Turn work. Over first Ch 2 Sp: DCStndSt, Ch 2, 2 DC. DC in each DC along the first side. Over second Ch 2 Sp: DC, Ch 2, DC. DC in each DC along the next side. Over last Ch 2 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 2, DC.
BORDER REPEAT 3 – SOLID
Turn work. Over first Ch 2 Sp: DCStndSt, Ch 2, 2 DC. DC in each DC along the first side. Over second Ch 2 Sp: DC, Ch 2, DC. DC in each DC along the next side. Over last Ch 2 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 2, DC.
BORDER REPEAT 4 – LATTICE ROW 1
Turn work. Over first Ch 2 Sp: DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC. +*Skip 3 DC and then DC in next DC. Ch 3 and DC in same stitch that last DC was made (such that a V with Ch 3 has been made).* Repeat *Stitches* until reaching the last 3 DCs for the side. Skip the last 3 DCs.+ Over second Ch 2 Sp: DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC. Repeat +Stitches+ once, to construct the second side. Over last Ch 2 Sp: DC, Ch 3, DC.
BORDER REPEAT 5 – LATTICE ROW 2
Turn work. In first DC: DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC. +*Skip Ch 3 and then DC in next DC. Ch 3 and DC in next DC (such that a V with Ch 3 has been made).* Repeat *stitches* until reaching the last Ch 3 for the side. Skip the last Ch 3.+ In Cnr DC: DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC. Repeat +Stitches+ once, to construct the second side. In last DC: DC, Ch 3, DC.
Option 2
Extend the lattice from Row 10, by repeating the following row as many times as desired.
LATTICE ROW 2 REPEAT
Turn work. In first DC: DCStndSt, Ch 3, DC. +*Skip Ch 3 and then DC in next DC. Ch 3 and DC in next DC (such that a V with Ch 3 has been made).* Repeat *Stitches* until reaching the last Ch 3 for the side. Skip the final Ch 3.+ In Cnr DC: DC, Ch 3, DC, Ch 3, DC. Repeat +Stitches+ once. In last DC: DC, Ch 3, DC.
