A pretty and versatile shawl that also whips up very quickly from a simple 8 row repeat. The filet work is yarn sparing, so a good sized shawl can be made from one graduated colour change yarn cake. Perfect for all seasons: make with cotton or cotton blends of a lighter ply for Summer evening wear, and Spring and Autumn day wear; or make it with acrylic or wool for Winter wear. A crochet tie can be made to weave through the filet work to draw the shawl in under the bust or around the waist. If making in 8 or 10 ply yarn, be sure to make a cute matching Vintage Vibes Beanie.

  • Tie: Made from stacking one DCStndSt on top of another. This has been threaded through the filet work to draw the shawl in around the waist. (The same can be done using a diagonal weave of the tie under the bust). To use as a beach coverup, make this oversized shawl in cotton.

Pattern Synopsis

  1. Shawl with filet work.
  2. Worked top down, in a triangle v-shape construction, alternating right and wrong side each subsequent row.
  3. Stitches are beginner worthy DC, Ch and Sl St.
  4. Increases occur in the ends of the shawl (left and right top corners of the triangle) and the middle of the shawl (bottom corner of triangle) . (Note: the stitch increase made in Diamond Flower Row 1 is not maintained in subsequent rows, so is not considered a true increase.)
  5. Each round commences at the flat top of the shawl’s triangle, at one end/tip/corner (alternating left and right each round).

Colour Changes

  • Colour changes are intentionally not incorporated into the pattern instructions; however colours can be changed as frequently as desired. Suggestions for colour repeat options are provided in Appendix 4.
  • Join new yarn colour over the first Ch 1 Sp corner for the row.
  • Use either a Ch 3 (to count for the first DC) or a DCStndSt to commence with the new colour.
  • Always join yarn with the same joining and initial stitch method (Ch 3 or DCStndSt).

Tips

  • For best effect, use a yarn that has a good drape/ molds well to the body shape and is soft/ comfortable to wear, but not overly fluffy.
  • Use recommended hook size range as a guide only. My tension is reasonably loose, and I have a ‘Rider’ Golden Loop style. To achieve a nice drape, you may need to go up half to a whole size from your regular hook for the ply being used.
  • To size to individual preference:
    • Work rows 1-9.
    • Measure (L)ength from the start of Row 2 to the end of Row 9.
    • Measure (W)idth from the start of Row 1 to end of Row 8.
    • To determine the number of 8 row repeats required for a shawl of a Preferred Finished Length (PFL), use the following calculation (with the same units for numerator and denominator): PFL/L. Round up or down (to a whole number). Note: if you want to be more accurate, also consider length of row 1 plus 1 row border.
    • To determine the number of 8 row repeats required for a shawl of a Preferred Finished Width (PFW), use the following calculation (with the same units for numerator and denominator): PFW/W. Round up or down (to a whole number). Note: if you want to be more accurate, also consider length of row 1 plus 1 row border.
  • When constructing corner stitches in a middle corner Ch 1 Sp, after making the last corner DC ensure the next previous row DC stitch is exposed by pulling the corner stitches sideways, away from this stitch. Stitching in the next DC stitch is critical to maintain the correct stitch count for subsequent rows.
  • When constructing the diamond flower rows 2 and 3, ensure that the motif stitches are worked into the previous row stitches (rather than over the stitches).
  • Depending on individual tensioning/ thickness of yarn, when constructing the middle corner of the shawl (at the bottom tip of the V), Ch 2 may be substituted for the pattern Ch 1. This may be necessary to maintain the diamond shape of the corner.

Abbreviations

Ch = Chain

Cnr = Corner

Sp = Space

Sl St = Slip Stitch

DC = Double Crochet

DCStndSt = DC Standing Stitch (refer to Special Stitch Instructions), which can be used in the place of Ch 3, when beginning each row.

VStPct = V-Stitch with Picot (used only for optional Border – refer to Special Stitch Instructions.)

RS = Right Side

WS = Wrong Side

Special Stitch Instructions

DCStndSt[1]:

  1. SC over the magic circle or Ch 1 Sp Cnr (whichever is applicable), without first making a Ch 1.
  2. Ch 1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.

VStPct:

In the first Ch 1 Sp Cnr in the row: DCStndSt, DC, Ch 4 and then Sl St into front loop only of the last DC constructed (in the same row – which forms the picot), and then 2 DC.

In the remaining Ch 1 Sp in the row: 2 DC, Ch 4 and then Sl St into the front loop of the last DC constructed (in the same row – which forms the picot), and then 2 DC.

Pattern Instructions

Note:

  • An explanation of the ‘Repeat *Stitches*…’ instruction are provided in Appendix 1. Photo images for construction of the more complex parts of the pattern is provided in Appendix 2. A chart is available in the PDF that can be downloaded from Ravelry.
  • The beginning DCStndSt/Ch 3 are included in the ‘DC’ stitch count.
  • If commencing with Ch 3 rather than DCStndSt, then Sl St across to the first Ch 1 Sp to begin.
  • If commencing with the DCStndSt, there is no need to Sl St; instead DCStndSt straight into the Ch 1 Sp.
  • When your shawl is the preferred size, add a border of your choice. It is recommended that an additional alternating DC – Ch 1 Sp filet row is first made. The example shawls have two different border options. The instructions for these are provided in Appendix 3.
  • Instructions are written with reference to Right Side (RS) and Wrong Side (WS). However, this is purely for keeping track of rows, particularly if colour changes are being worked. Wear shawl on either side (depending on your preference).

Subsequent 8 Row Repeats

So far, 3 repeats in total will have been constructed. To construct additional repeats, please refer to both A) the Repeats Table (on this page) and B) the Repeats Generic Written Instructions (on the following page).

Repeats Table explanation:

  • The first column represents the pattern repeat number. There is one table row to follow per pattern repeat. Make as many repeats as required to achieve the preferred shawl size.
  • There are eight pattern rows to construct for each pattern repeat and these are represented in table columns 2 to 9 (Rows 1 to 8). The row type is also provided in each column header (i.e. Filet, Solid, Diamond Flower Row 1 (DF 1), Diamond Flower Row 2 (DF 2), or Diamond Flower Row 3 (DF 3)).
  • Each table cell contains the details for a specific row within a specific repeat. For example, the first cell provides the information for pattern Row 1 of Repeat 4. The following information is provided for each row within a repeat: Row number (R); repeat *stitches* number (n (refer to Written Instructions)); DC only stitch count (S); and, number of motifs (M (where applicable to the row)).
  • Use this table in conjunction with the written instructions. Substitute ‘Repeat *Stitches* n times’ within the pattern written instructions with the number provided for ‘n’ in the Repeats Table (specific to the pattern row being worked).

Appendix 1: Abbreviated Pattern Instructions Explanation

Following is an example of how to interpret the *Stitches* repeats within the abbreviated pattern. If you need any further explanation for a particular row, please contact me via my FB page or my blog.

Row 1: Pattern Abbreviated Version

Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch. DCStndSt over circle, then *Ch 1 and DC over circle*. Repeat *stitches* four times. If using a magic circle, now pull taut. Turn.

Row 1: Underlined Explanation

  1. The pattern instructs you to first work all of the stitches up to the ‘Repeat *stitches*…’ instruction. So work all of the underlined stitches first::

Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch. DCStndSt over circle, then *Ch 1 and DC over circle*. Repeat *stitches* four times. If using a magic circle, now pull taut. Turn.

  1. The pattern then instructs you to work the stitches that are in between each of the single asterisks four times. So work just the underlined stitches, four times:

Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch. DCStndSt over circle, then *Ch 1 and DC over circle*. Repeat *stitches* four times. If using a magic circle, now pull taut. Turn.

  1. Finally the pattern instructs you to work the instructions immediately following the ‘Repeat *stitches*…’ instructions. So work the underlined stitches next:

Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch. DCStndSt over circle, then *Ch 1 and DC over circle*. Repeat *stitches* four times. If using a magic circle, now pull taut. Turn.

Row 1: Detailed Explanation Further Stepped Out

This row should be interpreted as:

  1. Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch.
  2. DCStndSt over circle.
  3. Ch 1 and DC over circle.
  4. Repeat Step 3 four times.
  5. If using a magic circle, now pull taut. Otherwise skip to Step 6.
  6. Turn

Appendix 2: Pattern Images

Beginning with Ch 3 instead of DCStndSt

Ch 3 can be substituted for the DCStndSt, if preferred. Note: an extra Ch will also need to be made (Ch 4 in total). The Ch 4 stands for both the DCStndSt and the first Ch 1 Sp. (The Ch 1 Sp will be worked over when constructing the next row). To commence subsequent rows, Sl St into the first Ch 1 Sp, and then Ch 4.

Diamond Flower Row 2

(As per pattern) DCs have been worked in the previous row stitches up to, and including, the DC that is three DCs prior to the first Ch (of the previous row Ch 3). Ch 3 has then been constructed:

The next two DCs and the first Ch (from the previous row) have been skipped, and then a Sl St has been made into the second Ch. Ch 3 has then been constructed:

(Note: the following stitches are not shown in the above images.) To complete the motif row 2, skip the third Ch and the next two DCs from the previous row. Then DC in the following DCs from the previous row (as per pattern).

Diamond Flower Row 3

(As per pattern) DCs have been worked in the previous row stitches up to, and including, the DC that is immediately before the first Ch (of the previous row Ch 3).

A DC has also been constructed in the first and second Ch of the previous row Ch 3.

Ch 1 has then been made.

The previous row Ch – Sl St – Ch stitch sequence has been skipped and a DC has been constructed in each of the next two Ch stitches. (As per pattern) DCs have been worked in the following DCs from the previous row.

Appendix 3: Example Borders

Simple 2 Row Border (beginner worthy)

This border was used on the red (single colour shawl), using option 2. A below.

It was also used on the Slice ‘O’ Cherry Pie gradient shawl and multi-coloured shawl, using option 2. B below.

BORDER ROW 1 – Alternating DC – Ch 1 Sp Filet

In first Ch 1 Sp: DCStndSt, Ch 1, DC. Ch 1 and DC in next DC. *Ch 1, skip a DC and then DC in next DC*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp. Ch 1 and then in next Ch 1 Sp: DC, Ch 1, DC. Ch 1 and DC in next DC, *Ch 1, skip a DC and then DC in next DC *. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp. Ch 1 and then in next Ch 1 Sp: DC, Ch 1, DC. Turn.

BORDER ROW 2 – V-Stitch With Picot

There are two options:

  1. Construct border only around the bottom two (shorter) edges of the shawl, or
  2. Construct border around all three edges of the shawl (two shorter and one longer edge).

If using a single colour yarn, or a multi-coloured pattern repeat shawl, options 1. or 2. can be used.

If using a gradual gradient colour change yarn, then option 1. is recommended.

The Short Edges instructions will entirely construct option 1. and will construct two of the three edges for option 2. If working option 2, next follow the Long Edge instructions.

Short Edges (options 1. and 2.):

VStPct in first Ch 1 Sp (Cnr). *SC In next Ch 1 Sp, and then VStPct in next Ch 1 Sp*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp (between the two short edges). In next Cnr Ch 1 Sp: SC, VStPct, SC. *VStPct in next Ch 1 Sp, and then SC In next Ch 1 Sp*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp (between the short and long edges). VStPct in next Cnr Ch 1 Sp. Either fasten off, or continue with Long Edge instructions.

Long Edge (option 2. only) A:

SC over DC post of the DC immediately counter clockwise of the Ch 1 Sp that the last V-stich with picot was made over (refer to left and centre images). *VStPct over next DC post (right image), and then SC over next DC post*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching centre of long edge of shawl, and then VStPct in beginning circle (from Row 1 of shawl construction). *SC over next DC post, and then VStPct over next DC post*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp. SC over the next DC post (of the Cnr Ch 1 Sp where the border row was commenced). Fasten off.

Long Edge (option 2. only) B:

As per option 2. A, except substitute the following stitch sequence for the VStPct: Ch 1, DC, Ch1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch1.

More Detailed 5 Row Border (intermediate)

This border was used on the Mid Morning Mocha’roo gradient shawl. Note: working this border after 7 pattern repeats will use almost all of a single Scheepjes Whirl.

First work Border Row 1 and Border Row 2 (option 1.) as per Simple 2 Round Border Instructions.

Then work the instructions for the following three rows:

BORDER ROW 3 – First Loop Row

*Ch 3 and then Sl St over next picot (space) from the previous row. Ch 6 and then Sl St again over same picot (so that another loop has been formed on top of the previous row picot loop). Ch 3 and then Sl St into next SC from previous row.* Repeat *stitches* until reaching the last picot in the row. Ch 3 and then Sl St over the last picot. Ch 6 and then Sl St again over same picot. DC in DCStndSt from previous row. Turn.

BORDER ROW 4 – Second Loop Row

*Ch 3 and SC into next Sl St from the previous row. Ch 8 and SC in next Sl St (so that another loop has been formed on top of the previous two). Ch 3 and then SC in next Sl St.* Repeat *stitches* up to and including the Sl St in the row. Turn.

BORDER ROW 5 – Third Loop Row

*Ch 10 and Sl St into next SC from the previous row. Ch 3, skip Ch 3 – SC – Ch 3 sequence, and Sl St into next SC.* Repeat *stitches* until reaching the last SC. Ch 10 and then Sl St into the last SC.

[1] The Standing Stitch is worked at the start of a new round so that the seam is less obvious. As there are a number of ways to work a standing stitch, if you already have a method that works for you, please substitute your preferred method where this stitch is referenced in the pattern instructions. Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt. Use the same method throughout construction.
