Pattern Synopsis

  • Square blanket with filet work. The repeating filet motif is diamond shaped, and consists of:
    • Outer diamond,
    • Inner diamond (embedded within the outer diamond), and
    • Diamond flower (embedded within the inner diamond).
  • Worked right side always, in the round.
  • Stitches are beginner worthy DC, Ch and Sl St.
  • Increases occur only in each of the four corners of the blanket (four additional stitches per corner).
  • Each round commences in a corner (to ensure the seam is less noticeable).

Colour Changes

  • Colour changes are intentionally not incorporated into the pattern instructions as the design is intended to be worked with either a single colour yarn or a graduated colour change yarn. However, colour changes can be easily incorporated.
  • If commencing with a new colour for a new round, ignore the ‘Cnr’ instructions to ‘Sl St across to the first Ch 1 Sp corner’, and instead directly join the yarn in a previous round Ch 1 Sp corner. Use either a Ch 3 (to count for the first DC) or a DCStndSt.
  • Always join next colour yarn with the same joining and initial stitch method (Ch 3 or DCStndSt).
  • Always join next colour yarn at a different corner from the last.

Tips

  • For best effect, use a yarn that is composed of a fibre that yields good stitch definition (not overly soft or fluffy).
  • Use recommended hook size range as a guide only. My tension is reasonably loose, and I have a ‘Rider’ Golden Loop style.
  • To size to individual preference:
    • Work rounds 1-11 to make one approximate half motif on each side of the square (four half motifs in total).
    • Measure from centre to outer edge of one side of the square to get the Half Motif Square (HMS) width.
    • To determine the approximate number of half motifs required for a blanket of a Preferred Finished Size (PFS), use the following calculation (with the same units for numerator and denominator): PFS/HMS. Round up or down (to a whole number). Note: as rounds 1-11 are half a round more than half a motif, the estimation will become less accurate as the size of the blanket increases.
  • To determine estimated finished size for the desired number of half motifs:
    • Work rounds 1-11 to make one approximate half motif on each side of the square (four half motifs in total).
    • Measure from centre to outer edge of one side of the square to get the Half Motif Square (HMS) width.
    • To determine the approximate blanket size for a given Number of Half Motifs (NHM), use the following calculation: NHM*HMS. Round up or down (to a whole number). Note: as rounds 1-11 are half a round more than half a motif, the estimation will become less accurate as the size of the blanket increases.
  • When constructing corner stitches in the Ch 1 Sp corner, after making the last corner DC ensure the next previous round DC stitch is exposed by pulling the corner stitches sideways, away from this stitch. Stitching in this first side DC stitch is critical to maintain the correct stitch count for each side.
  • When constructing the diamond flower rounds 2 and 3, and also the round immediately following these, ensure that the motif stitches are worked into the previous round stitches (rather than over the stitches).
  • Depending on individual tensioning/ thickness of yarn, when constructing the blanket corners, Ch 2 may be substituted for the pattern Ch 1, in order to maintain the square shape of the corners.
  • If square is ‘turning’, this can be resolved by blocking or by working one or two rounds per repeat on the reverse side

Abbreviations

Ch = Chain

Sp = Space

Cnr = Corner (refer to Special Sequence Instructions)

Sl St = Slip Stitch

DC = Double Crochet

DCStndSt = DC Standing Stitch (refer to Special Stitch Instructions)

Special Stitch Instructions – StndSt[1]

DCStndSt:

  1. Ch 1 and then SC in the first stitch from the previous round (the same stitch in which the previous round Sl St was made).
  2. Ch1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.

Special Sequence Instructions – ‘Cnr’

As each corner (Cnr) of the blanket is constructed exactly the same way for every round, the construction of these has been abbreviated in the pattern. Each round always commences with the first corner construction. The increases occur within the corners, with a total increase of four stitches per corner (and 16 stitches per round).

For the second round, follow instructions 1.

For subsequent rounds, follow instructions 2. If continuing with the same colour for a new round, then follow A. If commencing with a new colour for a new round, then follow B.

1. Round 2:

First corner (make 1): Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp, then work the following five stitches over the corner: DCStndSt[2], DC, Ch 1[3] and then 2 DC.

Subsequent corner (make 3): Work the following five stitches over the next Ch 1 Sp: 2 DC, Ch 13 and then 2 DC.

2. Round 3 onwards:

     A) Same Colour:

First corner (make 1): Sl St across to first Ch 1 Sp corner, then work the following five stitches over the corner: DCStndSt, DC, Ch 1 and then 2 DC.

Subsequent corner (make 3): Work the following five stitches over the next Ch 1 Sp corner: 2 DC, Ch 1 and then 2 DC.

      B) Different Colour:

First corner (make 1): Join yarn in Ch 1 Sp corner (in a different corner than first corner of previous round), then work the following five stitches

over the corner: DCStndSt, DC, Ch 1 and then 2 DC.

Subsequent corner (make 3): Construct as per 2.A).

Pattern Instructions

The pattern instructions detail how to make multiple embedded filet diamond motifs.

Each motif consists of an outer diamond, an inner diamond and a diamond flower.

The diamond flower motif is embedded within the inner diamond motif (in red in image) and both of these are embedded within the outer diamond motif (in blue in image).

Simplified Charts can be downloaded from Ravelry.

Motifs are referred to in the pattern as numbered per side (rather than the total number for the round). So motif 1 is the first motif made for each side (and there will be four motifs total in the round), motif 2 is the second motif made for each side, etc.

Refer to both the Special Stitch Instructions for ‘DCStndSt’ and Special Sequence Instructions for ‘Cnr’.

For detailed examples of how to interpret the pattern instructions,  including the ‘Single side simplified’ stitch sequence, refer to Appendix 1. Additional explanations are provided in the pattern PDF available from Ravelry.

Finish the blanket with any Diamond Flower Round 2 (according to size preference), then work a border after this round. (I.e. Diamond Flower Round 2 rounds include the following rounds: 28, 37, 46, 55, 64, 73, 82, 91, 100, etc.). Refer to Appendix 2 for example blanket border instructions.

  • A round of Crab Stitch or Spin Stitch;
  • Shell border
  • V-stitch and shell border

Appendix 1 – Pattern Round Examples Explained

Following are examples of how to interpret the abbreviated pattern. I’ve provided several different explanations for some rounds. If you need any further explanation for a particular round, please contact me via my FB The Crochet Fix page.

Single Side Simplified Stitch Instructions – All Rounds

Immediately following the (Stitch Count) for each round, except Round 1, is a simplified version of the pattern for the construction of a single side (excluding both corners). The numbers represent the numbers of DCs, a comma represents a single Ch 1 (and a skipped stitch), and a full stop represents a Sl St.

Example 1:

Round 3 –Filet, Motif 1 Outer Diamond Commences

*Make Cnr, then DC in each of the next 3 DCs, Ch 1 and skip a DC, then DC in each of the next 3 DCs*. Repeat *stitches* three times (to complete remaining corners and sides), then Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

(Stitch Count: 40 DC, 8 Ch 1 Sp (including corners))

Single side simplified (excluding both corners): 3, 3

Example 2:

Round 10 – Filet, Diamond Flower Round 2

*Make Cnr, DC in each of the next 3 DCs, Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, 3 DCs (5 DCs made in total)), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, 2 DCs (4 DCs made in total)), Ch 3 and skip 2 DCs and first Ch, Sl St into second Ch, Ch 3 and skip third Ch and 2 DCs , DC in/over each of the next (2 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, DC (4 DCs made in total)), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (3 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, DC (5 DCs made in total), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in each of the next 3 DCs*. Repeat *stitches* three times (to complete remaining corners and sides), then Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

(Stitch Count: 112 DC, 20 Ch 1 Sp (including corners), 4 Sl St (motifs), 8 Ch 3 Sp (motifs))

Single side simplified (excluding both corners): 3, 5, 4, , , . , , , 4, 5, 3

Round 1

Pattern Abbreviated Version

Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch. DCStndSt over circle, then *Ch 1 and 3 DC over circle*. Repeat *stitches* twice. Ch 1 and 2 DC over circle, then Sl St into DCStndSt.

Stepped Out Version

This round should be interpreted as:

  1. Make a closed circle using either: Magic circle; or Ch 3-4 and then Sl St into first Ch.
  2. DCStndSt over circle.
  3. *Ch 1 and 3 DC over circle*.
  4. Repeat Step 3 twice. (So you will have worked Step 3 a total of three time’s altogether).
  5. Ch 1 and 2 DC over circle.
  6. Sl St into DCStndSt

Round 4

Pattern Abbreviated Version

*Make Cnr, then DC next 3 DCs, Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, DC), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in each of the next 3 DCs*. Repeat *stitches* three times (to complete remaining corners and sides), then Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

In/Over Defined

The instruction ‘DC in/over’ should be worked as follows:

  • If next stitch from previous round is a DC, then ‘DC in’ the DC;
  • Else if next stitch from previous round is a Ch 1 Sp, then ‘DC over’ the Ch 1 Sp.

Brackets Explained

The brackets contain all the stitches (the sequence of these) from the previous round that a DC should be worked in or over.

Detailed Explanation

For the instructions, ‘DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, DC…’the following would apply:

  • DC in previous round DC, then
  • DC over previous round Ch 1 Sp, then
  • DC in previous round DC.

Round 18

Pattern Abbreviated Version

*Make Cnr, DC in each of the next 3 DCs, Ch 1 and skip a DC, **DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, 3 DCs (5 DCs made in total)), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, 2 DCs (4 DCs made in total)), Ch 3 and skip the next 3 DCs, DC in/over each of the next (2 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, DC (4 DCs made in total)), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (3 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, DC (5 DCs made in total)), Ch 1 and skip a DC**, DC in/over each of the next (5 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, 5 DCs (11 DCs made in total), Ch 1 and skip a DC. Repeat **stitches** once (for third motif of same side). DC in each of the next 3 DCs.* Repeat *stitches* three times (to construct remaining corners and sides), then Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

Repeat Within a Repeat

This round introduces double asterisks (**). Where there are both single (*) and double (**) asterisks, you will be constructing a repeat(s) within a repeat.

Stepped Out Version

This round should be interpreted as:

  1. *Make Cnr.
  2. DC in each of the next 3 DCs.
  3. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  4. **DC in the next DC, DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, DC in each of the next 3 DCs.
  5. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  6. DC in the next DC, DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, DC in each of the next 2 DCs.
  7. Ch 3 and skip the next 3 DCs.
  8. DC in each of the next 2 DCs, DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, DC in next DC.
  9. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  10. DC in each of the next 3 DCs, DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, DC in the next DC.
  11. Ch 1 and skip a DC**.
  12. DC in each of the next 5 DCs, DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, DC in each of the next 5 DCs.
  13. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  14. Repeat Steps 4 to 11 once (for third motif of same side).
  15. DC in each of the next 3 DCs.*
  16. Repeat Steps 1 to 15 three times (to construct remaining corners and sides).
  17. Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

Round 27

Multiple Different Repeats Within a Repeat

This round introduces the plus symbol (+). Where there this symbol is used, you will be constructing a unique stitch sequence repeat(s) within a repeat. This will be different sequence to the double asterisk (**) stitch sequence. Usually the +stitches+ repeat sequence has less stitches than the **stitches** repeat sequence, as you will see below.

Pattern Abbreviated Version

*Make Cnr, DC in each of the next 3 DCs, Ch 1 and skip a DC, ** +DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, 3 DCs), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (DC, Ch 1 Sp, 2 DCs), Ch 3 and skip 3 DCs, DC in/over each of the next (2 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, DC), Ch 1 and skip a DC, DC in/over each of the next (3 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, DC), Ch 1 and skip a DC+, DC in/over each of the next (5 DCs, Ch 1 Sp, 5 DCs), Ch 1 and skip a DC**. Repeat **stitches** once (for 5th motif of same side). Repeat +stitches+ once (for 6th motif of same side), then DC in each of the next 3 DCs.* Repeat *stitches* three times (to construct remaining corners and sides), then Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

Stepped Out Version

This round should be interpreted as:

  1. *Make Cnr.
  2. DC in each of the next 3 DCs.
  3. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  4. ** +DC in the next DC, then DC over next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in each of the next 3 DCs.
  5. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  6. DC in the next DC, then DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in each of the next 2 DCs.
  7. Ch 3 and skip 3 DCs.
  8. DC in each of the next 2 DCs, then DC over next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in the next DC.
  9. Ch 1 and skip a DC.
  10. DC in each of the next 3 DCs, then DC over next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in the next DC.
  11. Ch 1 and skip a DC+.
  12. DC in each of the next 5 DCs, then DC over next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in each of the next 5 DCs.
  13. Ch 1 and skip a DC**.
  14. Repeat Steps 4 to 13 once.
  15. Repeat Steps 4 to 11 once.
  16. DC in each of the next 3 DCs.*
  17. Repeat Steps 1 to 16 three times.
  18. Sl St into first Cnr DCStndSt.

Appendix 2 – Example Blanket Borders

Mint Yarn Blanket Border

This border is 5 rounds in total.

After any Diamond Flower Round 2, work the following:

  • 3 rounds of solid DC – i.e.:
    • Round 1: *Make Cnr, DC in/over each stitch (all DC and Ch stitches) from previous round until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp from the previous round.* Repeat *stitches* three times to construct the remaining corners and sides, then Sl St into DCStndSt.
    • Rounds 2 & 3: *Make Cnr, DC in each DC from previous round until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp from previous round.* Repeat *stitches* three times to construct the remaining corners and sides, then Sl St into DCStndSt.
  • 1 round of DC – Ch1 Sp filet, i.e.
    • First Side: Construct Cnr as (DCStndSt, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1), DC in the next DC from the previous round, *Ch 1 and skip the next DC from the previous round, DC in the next DC from the previous round*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp from the previous round.
    • Subsequent Sides: Construct Cnr as (Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1), DC in the next DC from the previous round, *Ch 1 and skip the next DC from the previous round, DC in the next DC from the previous round*. Repeat *stitches* until reaching the next Cnr Ch 1 Sp from the previous round.
    • After the fourth side is constructed, Ch 1 and Sl St into DCStndSt.
  • 1 round of double V stitch, i.e.
    • *Make (standard) Cnr, skip the next DC from the previous round and then SC in the next Ch 1 Sp, **skip the next DC and then double V stitch in next Ch 1 Sp (i.e. 2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC, all in the same Ch 1 Sp), skip the next DC from the previous round and then SC in next Ch 1 Sp **. Repeat **stitches** until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp Cnr from the previous round.* Repeat *stitches* three times to construct the remaining corners and sides, then Sl St into DCStndSt.

Gradient Yarn Blanket Border

  • 1 round of double V stitch with picot, (i.e. First double V with picot stitch = DCStndSt and DC in Ch 1 Sp, Ch 4 and then Sl St into top of the second DC of the 2 DCs just made, then 2 DC in same Ch 1 Sp. Subsequent double V with picot stitches = 2 DC in Ch 1 Sp, Ch 4 and then Sl St into top of the second DC of the 2 DCs just made, then 2 DC in same Ch 1 Sp.) *Make double V with picot stitch in Cnr Ch 1 Sp, skip the next DC from the previous round and then SC in the next Ch 1 Sp, **skip the next DC from the previous round and then double V with picot stitch in the next Ch 1 Sp, skip the next DC and then SC in the next Ch 1 Sp**. Repeat **stitches** until reaching the next Ch 1 Sp Cnr from the previous round.* Repeat *stitches* three times to construct the remaining corners and sides, then Sl St into DCStndSt.

[1] The Standing Stitch is worked at the start of a new round so that the seam is less obvious. As there are a number of ways to work a standing stitch, if you already have a method that works for you, please substitute your preferred method where this stitch is referenced in the pattern instructions. Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt. Use the same method throughout construction.

[2] Note: Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt

[3] Substitute Ch 2 for Ch 1 if corners are not square or the space is not big enough to work the DCs in subsequent rounds (with the thickness of yarn chosen).

[4] Beginning Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt. If commencing with Ch 3, then Sl St into the top of the 3rd chain to complete the round (and same for  each subsequent round).

[5] Note: Finishing Sl St does not count as a stitch for stitch count purposes. This is also applicable to all subsequent pattern rounds.
