Pattern Synopsis
- Square blanket with diamond flower filet motifs and colour work.
- Worked right side always, in the round, with a simple eight round repeat.
- Stitches are beginner worthy DC, Ch and Sl St.
- Increases occur in the four corners of the blanket (with the exception of diamond flower motifs, however these are not counted as a true increase as this increase is not maintained in subsequent solid rounds).
- Each round commences in a corner (to ensure the seam is less noticeable).
Colour Changes
- Colour changes are intentionally not incorporated into the pattern instructions. If you would like to follow the same colour pattern as one of the example blankets then follow the Pattern Colour Options below. Alternatively, compose your own colour pattern.
- If commencing with a new colour for a new round, ignore the instructions to ‘Sl St across to the first Ch 1 Sp corner’, and instead directly join the yarn in the Ch 1 Sp corner. Either use a Ch 3 to count for the first DC, or use a DCStndSt.
- Other suggestions are: Option 1 with two to three contrasting colours alternated; and, Option 2 with rainbow colours separated by a round of white, cream or silver.

Tips
- For best effect, use a yarn that is composed of a fibre that yields good stitch definition (not overly soft or fluffy).
- Use recommended hook size as a guide only. My tension is reasonably loose, and I have a ‘Rider’ Golden Loop style.
- To size to individual preference, work 8 round repeats until the intended size is achieved. To determine the required number of repeats for a blanket of a preferred finished size, work the first repeat and measure the width of this repeat, then calculate the estimated required number of repeats as follows: Finished Preferred Size/Single Repeat Size. Round up or down (to a whole number).
- When fastening off a colour, always leave a long tail for sewing in (unless your preference is to use a secure knotting method).
- Always join next colour yarn with the same joining and initial stitch method (whether this be a standing stitch or Ch stitches).
- Always join next colour yarn at a different corner from the last.
- When constructing corner stitches in the Ch 1 Sp corner, after making the last corner DC ensure the next previous round DC stitch is exposed by pulling the corner stitches sideways, away from this stitch. Stitching in this first side DC stitch is critical to maintain the correct stitch count for each side.
- When constructing the rounds 4 and 5, ensure that the motif stitches are worked into the stitches, rather than over the stitches, from the previous round.
- Depending on individual tensioning/ thickness of yarn, when constructing the blanket corners, Ch 2 may be substituted for the pattern Ch 1, in order to maintain the square shape of the corners.
Abbreviations
- Ch = Chain
- Sp = Space
- Sl St = Slip Stitch
- DC = Double Crochet
- HDC = Half Double Crochet (referred to in pattern only as example blanket border)

Special Stitch Instructions – StndSt[1]
DCStndSt:
- Ch 1 and then SC in the first stitch from the previous round (the same stitch in which the previous round Sl St was made).
- Ch1 and then SC in the front loop only of the SC made in Step 1.
HDCStndSt (used for optional border option only):

Pattern Instructions
The blanket has two options for working Round 7 of each eight round repeat. This round can either be constructed in a DC Ch 1 Sp filet pattern – refer to Round 7A. Or it can be constructed as solid DC – refer to Round 7 B. Work only one of the options for Rounds 7 and 8, not both. If working Round 7 A instructions, then next follow Round 8 A instructions. Similarly, if working Round 7 B instructions, then next follow Round 8 B instructions. This is applicable for all repeats.Refer to Pattern Image Appendix for visualisation of the more complex parts of the blanket construction and for motif charts.

Further Pattern Repeats
If continuing with the same colour, always Sl St into the Ch 1 Sp corner to commence the next round. Otherwise join the new colour in a Ch 1 Sp corner.Follow the logic in the Pattern Repeat Logic below to construct the additional repeats. If more details are needed for construction for a particular round, then refer to Pattern Instructions. The number of motifs will increase by three per side for each repeat (so 13 in Round 5, 16 in Round 6, etc.)
Pattern Repeat Logic
(T = Round Type; C = Corner (x4) ; S= Side (x4))
- Round 1: T= Solid; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= DC in each DC.
- Round 2: T= Solid; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= DC in each DC.
- Round 3: T= Diamond Motif Round 1; C= DC-Ch1-DC; S= 4 DCs immediately after and immediately before each corner, 9 DCs between motifs. Motif construction: Ch 3 over one skipped DC.
- Round 4: T= Diamond Motif Round 2; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= 3 DCs immediately after and immediately before each corner, 5 DCs between motifs. Motif construction: Ch 3 and skip the 2 DCs immediately before the next Ch 3 from previous round, Sl St in middle Ch stitch of Ch 3 from previous round, Ch 3 and skip the 2 DCs immediately after the Ch 3 from the previous round.
- Round 5: T= Diamond Motif Round 3; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= 7 DCs immediately after and immediately before each corner, 9 DCs between motifs. Motif construction: DC in each of first two chains of first Ch 3 from previous round, Ch 1 over skipped Ch 1 – Sl St – Ch 1 sequence, then DC in last two chains of second Ch 3 from previous round.
- Round 6: T= Solid; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= DC in each DC/ over each Ch 1 sp.
- Round 7A: T= Filet; C= Ch1-DC-Ch1-DC-Ch1; S= (DC, Ch 1 and skip DC) repeat, and then finishing with DC in last DC before next corner Ch 1 Sp.
- OR Round 7B: T= Solid; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= DC in each DC.
- Round 8A: T= Solid; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= (DC in DC, DC over Ch 1 Sp) repeat, and then finishing with DC in last DC before next corner Ch 1 Sp.
- OR Round 8B: T= Solid; C= 2DC-Ch1-2DC; S= DC in each DC.
Border (Optional)
The blanket can be bordered according to individual preference. Suggestions include:
- A round of SlSt in the back stitches only;
- A round of Crab Stitch or Spin Stitch;
- One round per colour of SC.
- One round per colour of HDC.
- Shell border
- V-stitch and shell border
Cake Yarn (uncontrolled colour changes) Filet Variant
A more symmetrical design may be preferred when using yarns such as:
- Graduated colour change cake(s);
- Sudden colour change cake(s);
- Single yarn solid colour; or,
- Variegated yarn.
It wasn’t my original intention for the blanket to be constructed with these yarns but as this seems to be a popular and excellent choice, I have provided some brief instructions below for my preferred design option for these yarns. Please contact me if you need further assistance with constructing this variant. The standard blanket has only one DC/ Ch 1 Sp filet round (Round 7A) per repeat. This variant instead has two DC/ Ch 1 Sp filet rounds per repeat (in Rounds 1 and 7). The Cake Yarn Filet Variant Round 1 should be substituted for the standard blanket solid Round 1. Round 2 will remain a solid round; however this will be constructed slightly differently (Cake Yarn Filet Variant Round 2), owing to the previous filet round.
Cake Yarn Filet Variant Round 1
First Repeat
- Make a magic circle (or closed 3-4 Ch circle).
- DCStndSt (or beginning 3 Ch) over magic circle, then ch 1.
- DC, then ch 1.
- Repeat Step 3, 6 times.
- Pull circle taut, and then Sl St into DCStndSt/ 3rd ch of beginning Ch 3.
(8 DC and 8 Ch 1 Sp)
Second and Subsequent Repeats
Construction is as per the principle of Round 7A construction (except that a different repeat stitches count and total stitch count will apply), i.e.:
- Construct the first corner in the first corner Ch 1 Sp (as per Round 7A). (DCStndSt or Ch 3, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1.)
- Construct the first side: DC in the next DC immediately following the corner Ch 1 Sp, *then Ch 1 and skip the next DC, then DC in next DC*, and then repeat *stitches* until reaching the next corner Ch 1 Sp.
- Construct the second corner in the next corner Ch 1 Sp (as per Round 7A). (Ch 1, DC, Ch 1, DC, Ch 1.)
- Construct the second side: DC in the next DC immediately following the corner Ch 1 Sp, *then Ch 1 and skip the next DC, then DC in next DC*, and then repeat *stitches* until reaching the next corner Ch 1 Sp.
- Construct the remaining corners and sides as per Steps 3 and 4 (repeat twice).
- Ch 1 and Sl St into first corner DCStndSt/ 3rd ch of beginning Ch 3.
Cake Yarn Filet Variant Round 2
First Repeat
- Sl St into first Ch 1 Sp, then construct the first corner from the following stitches, (all made into the first Ch 1 Sp): DCStndSt or Ch 3, DC, Ch 1, 2 DC.
- Construct the first side: DC in next DC (immediately after corner Ch 1 Sp), DC over next Ch 1 Sp, and DC in next DC.
- Construct the second corner from the following stitches, (all made into the next Ch 1 Sp): 2 DC, Ch 1, and 2 DC.
- Construct the second side: DC in next DC (immediately after corner Ch 1 Sp), DC over next Ch 1 Sp, and DC in next DC.
- Construct the remaining corners and sides as per Steps 3 and 4 (repeat twice).
- Sl St into DCStndSt/ 3rd ch of beginning Ch 3.
(28 DC and 4 Ch 1 Sp)
Second and Subsequent Repeats
Construction is as per the principle of Round 7B (except that a different repeat stitches count and total stitch count will apply), i.e.:
- Construct the first corner in the first corner Ch 1 Sp (as per Round 7B). (DCStndSt or Ch 3, DC, Ch 1, 2 DC)
- Construct the first side: DC in the next DC immediately following the corner Ch 1 Sp, *then DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in next DC*, and then repeat *stitches* until reaching the next corner Ch 1 Sp.
- Construct the second corner in the next corner Ch 1 Sp (as per Round 7B). (2DC, Ch 1, 2DC)
- Construct the second side: DC in the next DC immediately following the corner Ch 1 Sp, *then DC over the next Ch 1 Sp, then DC in next DC*, and then repeat *stitches* until reaching the next corner Ch 1 Sp.
- Construct the remaining corners and sides as per Steps 3 and 4.
- Sl St into first corner DCStndSt/ 3rd ch of beginning Ch 3.

Appendix – Pattern Images
Completing Round 1
If Ch 3 was used to commence the round, then Sl St into the top of the 3rd chain (Image1). If DCStndSt was used to commence the round, then Sl St into the top of the DCStndSt (Image 2).

Constructing Round 2 Corner
Use Ch 1 space from previous round to construct corner as per Image 3, after first making a Sl St into the corner space. Note: corner stitch counts vary for some of the rounds but the principle of construction is the same. Ch 3 can be substituted for the DCStndSt, if preferred.
Image 3
Motif Charts
The stitches that the motifs are comprised of are shown in chart form below, with each round shown in a different colour. The following repeat rounds are shown: 2 (orange), 3 (purple), 4 (green), 5 (blue), and 6 (red).
Multiple motifs are depicted below:
Commencing Round 4 (second round of motif construction)
Refer to Image 4 for construction. Some of the stitches have already been made (in the order of Steps 1) to 5) in the image). Note the skipped stitches (2 DCs either side of the Ch 3 sp, and the first and last chains of the Ch3 Sp). The last 3 DCs (before the second corner Ch 1 Sp) are yet to be made (Step 6).
Image 4
Commencing Round 5 (third round of motif construction)
Refer to Image 5 for construction. Some of the stitches have already been made (in the order of Steps 1) to 4) in the image). Note the stitches that need to be skipped (Sl St and a chain stitch on either side of the Sl St). The last 7 DCs are yet to be made (Steps 5 and 6).

Footnotes
[1] The Standing Stitch is worked at the start of a new round so that the seam is less obvious. As there are a number of ways to work a standing stitch, if you already have a method that works for you, please substitute your preferred method where this stitch is referenced in the pattern instructions. Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt and Ch 2 can be substituted for HDCStndSt. Use the same method throughout construction.
[2] Ch 3 can be substituted for DCStndSt and Ch 2 can be substituted for HDCStndSt. Use the same method throughout construction. If commencing with Ch 3, then Sl St into the top of the 3rd chain in Step 6 (and to complete each subsequent round).
[3] Substitute Ch 2 for Ch 1 if corners are not square or gap not big enough to work the DCs in subsequent rounds (with the thickness of yarn chosen).
